Your maps are wrong, Simon. Each of those maps is taken out of context.
The first map shows lands owned by the Jewish National Fund within the British Mandate of Palestine in 1946.
The second is the UN Partition plan in 1947.
The third is the 1967 borders.
The fourth is a territory map of Oslo Accords.
Each of these just says "Palestine" when that isn't true in the least.
It conflates land ownership with political borders.
It is deception. You should do better research.

As a veteran who has worked with the Patriot, THAAD, and GMD missile defense systems, I have always been deeply interested in and had a great respect for the Iron Dome system. The US has some really cool missile defense systems, but luckily they are very rarely needed to protect US interests or citizens. Israel, with it's Iron Dome, however, is an amazing bundle of technology that is saving lives way more often than we Americans in our safe, mostly isolated country, could ever imagine.

When Hamas took over as the leaders of the Palestinian Authority area, the subsequent peace agreement meant that they were in charge of their own medical systems and pretty much self sufficient in every other aspect. So it’s surprising to hear Simon saying that Israel was in charge of the medical stuff, unless the agreement has been changed again? Much respect to Simon for taking on a subject where, undoubtedly, people on both sides will feel that you didn't present the facts properly. As an Israeli, I obviously disagree with much of how you characterized the conflict but thanks for trying to present it in a balanced way. However, I will challenge your assertion that the Iron Dome has made the conflict more one-sided and therefore increased the Palestinians suffering. As you said, Israel has had the military advantage in this conflict for most of its history. However, in the past, Israel would have to act with extreme aggression and speed to stop incoming rocket fire from falling on our cities. In those years, Israel often had no choice but to mount a full ground invasion into Gaza which was devastating. This speed and aggression would lead to more collateral damage on the Palestinian side. Now, with the Iron Dome and border wall, Israel can afford more time with which to target terrorists and avoid civilian deaths. So, the Iron Dome has really helped to minimize civilian casualties on both sides.

With all due respect to Simon's writers... let's clarify two major factors involving Iron Dome. First of all: Israel has not initiated the conflicts in which the Iron Dome has been utilized. Secondly: Iron Dome is an entirely a defensive system. The argument is made that it changes the balance in the region and gives Israel a superior edge. Of course it does! They are protecting their people... full stop! Do Palestinians suffer greater harm in these conflicts? Unquestionably yes. Factors there are poor quality and targeting of Hamas rockets, installing launch sites in civilian/residential areas, and a general disregard for collateral damage on the part of Hamas. Israel, conversely, tends to actually warn civilian areas of a pending attack to minimize civilian casualties. Remember, in the most recent Gaza/Israel conflict the office building in Gaza housing Hamas offices and the AP new service was actually warned by Israel prior to the retaliatory destruction of the building. Back to the point, the narrative seems to be that Israel defending their own population (which itself is 21% Arab and 17.6% Muslim) is destabilizing. In any other region or conflict this statement would be considered the height of ludicrous. A nation that is unwilling to defend it's own citizens is unworthy of nationhood. Israel is not in that category.

Allows no building materials into the areas, blocks any trade going in and out, even patrols the waters so that fishermen can't get out far enough to catch enough fish. When the Palestinians had a protest a few years ago against much of this, they were fired upon by Israeli snipers. Medics were targeted and killed. They are not a recognised country. In their eyes, and not without good reason, Israel is an occupying force in their land. How is any of what you said. Israel will not accept them being a nation, they want full control and will settle for anything less, as said by Netenyahu many times. You're suggestion is completely naïve of the situation.

    • @andersonklein3587
      @andersonklein3587 Před 2 lety +5

@@SySoundwave they are in a really precarious situation. They are hindered. It is true that it makes the task of developing harder.
But the reason why it got so bad is because of the many many wars and attacks. And the only way it will start to get better is by focusing on building up.
Task N1: pass a modern constitution, with individual rights and free market rights and a strong judiciary.
Task N2: don't break it, put a tyrant in power, or topple the government.
Task N3: get trade deals, focus on teaching technical skills, focus aid money into building up infrastructure, create an export economy and increase productivity.
At this point you have a lot more friends abroad. And a strengthening position. A lot less hate without rockets flying towards either side. You'd probably have an easier time negotiating rights of passage, work visas, immigration, extradition, etc.
Down the line you can then work towards free trade zones and free passage. Other supra national institutions. I mean, Egypt could join in, the Saudis, and Jordan...
There is a path. It is not quick, it doesn't get back all the land or resources. But it is a path where everyone is richer, freer, happier, and more alive than now.
Israel won't let go of full control for as long as it sees Palestine as a threat. And seeing it as a war to the death doesn't help. There is no way to win that war by force, might as well try the peaceful solution.

There can’t be any peace while Israel refuses to put the return of the West Bank in its entirety on the table and the continued expansion into the West Bank makes it clear to the Palestinians this this will never happen.

14:50 …fair fight…?” I guess Simon would prefer if war was fought like in the Star Trek episode: A Taste of Armageddon. In it, a planet is split between two opposing and equally equipped sides who’s computers run simulated attacks and compute casualties, anyone who is determined to be a casualty in the simulation is required to commit suicide. The two sides decided that such was more humane than normal warfare and essential to maintaining balance.
What Simon doesn’t mention is that after the most recent events, the majority of Israel’s citizenry and parliament decided that Netanyahu’s methods were no longer acceptable and after 20 years he has been replaced as Israel’s PM.
Netanyahu’s track record of predictably heavy handed responses to extremist violence has played into the hands of Hamas, who conduct their operations in densely populated areas in the hopes of creating as many casualties as possible among Palestinians.
The IDF even established a system for calling Palestinians by phone and warning them of incoming attacks on Hamas targets in their areas. No other military in the world goes this far to avoid civilian casualties, but it’s never enough.
Btw, since Roman times the region was known as the “Palestinian Peninsula,” but this was a geographic term and not a recognition of any sovereign entity, and before the British invasion it was part of Ottoman Syria.
A significant part of the “occupied territories” issue is that Israel chose not to annex the West Bank or Gaza Strip because they wanted to use those areas as buffer zones between their Arab neighbors, after taking them from Egypt and Syria.

Every Iron Dome missile unable to intercept a missile will self destruct well before it falls to the ground.
If ten missiles are launched there will be 10 aerial blasts which are indistinguishable from an “interception”. Regardless of its effectiveness it puts on a pretty good show.
Plus the word “interception” is not synonymous with detonation of the incoming missile.

Piss poor straw man argument at best. The fact is most people fawning over the system are responding to the self destruct explosions. Did Simon mention self destruction blasts? No, no one defending the system dares to say it out loud. It’s a powerful fireworks display. Ten missiles launched - ten explosions. 100% success!!!
The US officials blatantly lied about the effectiveness of the Patriot missile during the Gulf War because they believed they could get away with it. They lied and were caught.
So again I ask how do people on the ground distinguish a self destruct blast from a successful detonation of an incoming missile?
And again what is the word “interception” mean as obsessively used by defenders of Iron Dome? It’s simply a word game they’re playing.
A word game that may be fooling the Israelis and even the Palestinians launching these missiles into believing the technical success of the system.
The overall “success” of Iron Dome may be mostly psychological successfully fooling the Palestinians that their efforts don’t work. That may be the real purpose of Iron Dome - a multi billion dollar Psy-Ops project.

I have to disagree with you about healthcare for the Palestinians in the territory captured by Israel during the 6 Day War in 1967.
Yes, as the occupying/controlling authority Israel is responsible for the well being of the people under its control. However, under various agreements between the state of Israel and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip which Israel turned over to Palestinian control in 2005(?) under Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon-whose visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is cited as the reason for the second Intifada.
Under these agreements the Palestinians took over the responsibility for the well being of the Palestinians in the areas returned to Palestinian control.
There are still parts of the West Bank under Israeli control where Israel is responsible for the well being of the Palestinians living there but most of the West Bank and all of the Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority and Hamas is no longer the responsibility of Israel under the agreements between Israel and the various Palestinian factions such as Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
