POISON ARROWS | MIKE OLDFIELD | DRUM COVER

Here is an old Mike Oldfield track from 1984 - so 40 years today, and also it is Mike´s birthday today too, so fitting to post this today.
I liked some of his 80´s output, but I must admit perhaps mainly from how drummer Simon Phillips was involved in both his drumming and producing (Mike got Simon first involved in producing during the Crises record).
This track which is from the "Discovery" record, is quite interesting from a drumming standpoint. One thing that really stands out in this period was how Simon really came up with his drum parts. He could have played much simpler, but it all makes for a really interesting drum part with incorporating the hi hat and gong drum.
There are many examples from his work with Mike that have those unique drum parts. For instance the "Crises" album, and also some from his last album he played on with Mike., "Heaven´s Open" from 1991. Also came to think about the long instrumental track "The Lake" - also from Discovery. Quite a lot of creative drumming he did back then.
I really like a "composed" drum part like this (mind you, if it fits and suits the song!), also one of the reasons I like how Neil Peart came up with his parts. What I think Simon excel in, is that on all those sessions he did back then, I guess he must have come up with those parts basically on the spot (as I think it was hardly any time to carefully work out the parts beforehand).
For this song I tried to get all those parts (as I hear them) and also his insane fills at the climax of the song near the end which I always loved and as I would think he just improvised there and then.
Also this song also has a kind of a huge gated reverb kinda drum sound, so I tried to get that vibe going on as well.
Great fun and challenge to try and play this song.
