- We all run for various reasons, but could one of those be to get abs? What does having abs even mean? Will it help us run faster? Can running help us reach that aesthetic goal? There’s a lot to unpack here, Heather is here to explain 🏃♀️

What are your reasons for running? Let us know 👇
Because I am a wobbly heap on the floor.
Not get fluffy and is required as part of a triathlon 😜. Interestingly enough, even with all the workouts I do, my abs remain the reigning hide and seek champs 💪🏽.
to fit into my old skinny clothes 😊
For crosstraining, getting gravity impact load, and saving time whilst getting multiple long to list benefits from easy to moderate running.
i just enjoy running with my dog, that's my reason. :)
Low body fat is really the key to having visible 6-packs, if for whatever reason this is what one desires. You can very easily have someone with much stronger "6-packs" that do not show as well-defined muscles because of higher body fat, while someone with perfectly average muscles might look pretty riped even though they really aren't strong in terms of raw muscles strenght.
I know, because I'm naturally fairly slim and I do have rip-looking 6 packs, even though I'd be hard pressed to determined how many years it's been since I did a crunch... I'm definitely not a muscular guy!
As a side note, posture also helps quite a bit. Body builders for example obviously have lots of well-defined muscles, but in contests they clearly know how to put themselves into postes which makes it stand out more. For 6-packs, leaning back slightly, and then contracting the abs to bring the upper torso forward a bit is likely to make your 6-pack stands out more. Lighting helps too - to bright/harsh a like prevents contrasts.
Excellent, Heather. 😍 running faster does make us happier!!!🏃♀
Something that I've really started noticing lately after a few years of running and this year of 70.3 training is the change in body composition. I've still got some extra weight around my waistline that aesthetically isn't the most pleasing, but everything else has started looking more athletic - which is really encouraging. If I were to just go off of the number on the scale, the last few years would be considered a failure in the weight loss category since my weight has barely changed at all. But, my muscle to fat ratio has definitely visibly changed and my body is in the best shape it's ever been even if I'm not at the lowest weight I've ever been.
Good luck with your IronMan! :)
Yeah man 🎉
How are you now?
Before starting triathlon I was cycling a lot, and as the years passed I found more and more difficult to lose that extra belly fat. When i started to ad some running into my training I finally got a bit leaner around the abs. Not really lighter though
Reducing calorie intake will help you lose it, maintaining same levels of exercise.
Thanks, Heather! Plank is the best, plus side planks after my run seems to keep the core strong and stomach flat. Not looking for a 6 pack
Planks are great for a strong core! However, targeting a certain group, such as abs by doing planks will not be the cause of your stomach staying flat. That will be the result of a combination of things, such as - nutrition, calorific balance, genetical disposition to fat storage and hydration.
@@shortclips9620 he already said *not looking for a 6 pack*
Stop calories deficit shit everywhere . Core is more important
Fun fact, your genetic tendon length determines what your “6 pack” looks like. A bulging body builder one requires long tendons attached to them. If you have short tendons attached to the muscles that pulls them tight and that’s why some people have rally flat ones when they are super lean. They are both as strong.
Heather. You were awesome. Thanks for my future six pack! !!!!
Not sure I e every really had a six pack, but I know I have a strong core. My main sport was swimming. It always seemed like having a little more body fat helped my position in the water...
Lots of interesting comments here. I used to be more focused on powerlifting, bodybuilding and aesthetics as a part of that. Since training for 70.3s, I've found that I'm more solid through my body and my 'trunk' feels really strong. That means my upper body is quite large (at 6ft and 74kg), but not the most defined that I've ever been. I'm lean but I find it more important to eat enough to fuel then to eat at maintenance or in a déficit.
Good to know they are there!
Great points
Nice content 💪💪 let's go
I be coming home from running practice unsatisfied with myself knowing I could do better and I just hate that feeling...can anyone relate??
sprinters, high jump, long jump, pole vault etc
Well I’m still running and trying to find them 🤣🤣🤣
I love this vid! Super educational. Have you ever used Next Level Diet? I got a personalized build up muscle meal plan from them and I love it.
I’ve never seen my abs ..
While I don't have visible Abs running did help me to get a real fine definition of my arm muscles ^^'
That being said my physiotherapist did recommend to strengthen the lower belly muscles in particular to help support the hip while running which is what I'm trying to do for some time now.
Hello mam, I had bankart surgery two months back. To say exactly today is 70th day. Before that I was doing workouts regularly but after surgery I stopped doing workouts. I'm recovering now and I can able to do only small exercises like squats and high knee crunches. And mam, I have a doubt...? Does running really reduce belly fat...?
If it is, then how long we should perform...?
What are the warmup exercises which I should do before running? Including diets.
Please suggest me, mam. Thank you.
I’m not a bodybuilder, but I am a powerbuilder who loves to run. Currently at a 1:29.5 half and working towards a full marathon at a 7:00/flat full. I weigh 212lbs at 5’11 and have been training religiously for 8 1/2 months for long distance runs.
Goodluck! :)
impressive work
You need to be below ~13% bodyfat in order to have abs, and really cut guys can even be below 5%. It's not about having large abdominal muscles; it's about having very low body fat, so the skin is directly on top of the muscle with very little fat obstructing the view! It can be very difficult to achieve such a low percentage bodyfat; and challenging to maintain. I'd argue diet is way more important than exercise in terms of abs.
Yes
Distance runners trend to be a bit paunchy. Sprinters are more likely to have visible abs.
"paunchy"
- Meaning: having a large and protruding belly
- Of the distance runners I associate with or generally have seen over the years, none of them have displayed large or protruding bellies
"Sprinters are more likely to have visible abs"
- Yer, but get them to run more than 800 metres and they're out of breath and get then to run 5km and they're literally crawling
@@thepsychologist8159 the average distance runners I see after generally pear shaped. Skinnier legs and arms with a small belly. The body us trying to optimize according to the demands placed on it; have some fat reserves and drop excess muscle. Sprinters tend to be muscular for short explosive power.
@@Chris-gq8ev "the average distance runners"
- These 'distance runners' you reference I'd put into the category of 'wannabees' who don't take the sport seriously.
"Sprinters tend to be muscular for short explosive power"
- These sprinters would be 'above average'. You don't have noticeble muscle mass unless you're dedicated and taking it seriously.
- A true comparison needs to be made here. A serious distance runner is lean with minimil body fact. A serious sprinter is toned with defined muscle mass.
@@thepsychologist8159 well, I can't claim anything past anecdotal evidence. This is what I've observed in the running clubs I've been in.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Chris-gq8ev Well fair enough, you can only report on what you've observed. But logically, and from what I've observed (and I've been running for the best part of 35 years), is that 'sprinters' who have muscle tone and defined abs, are those who are taking it seriously. In fact, I've never seen a podgy sprinter. Likewise, the dedicated distance runners I've known and seen over the years are lean and have little body fat. Those who have bellies are just the casual runners. For the dedicated runners in both cases, these athletes have 'abs', except the sprinter's are more defined.
This is an interesting topic
"This is not a competition"
You keep telling yourself that...😉
Ofcourse it does, I run 10km a day almost and the lines definitely show, yes I do know too that its all calories in vs calories out OBVIOUSLY 😅... Less fat equals more exposed muscle
Running does give you abs
Top!!!
Function over form, most efficient choice.
Si. Unito a bianco d'uovo e abbassamento della glicemia , si.
Honestly tho. Only using a pilates reformer will you develop perfect form. Developing the abdominal and leg connection will really hammer out those 10ks
Abs are the most important muscles for running!! Abs are the cross movement synchronizer between your upper body( Shoulder, arms) and lower body( hips, legs).
Abs helps upper and lower body movement synchronize and make running smoother , it is the bridge between upper and lower parts of your body.
I used to concentrate on each individual movement of my arms, shoulder, legs and hips separately and try to synchronize the movement for a smoother run but it takes lots of concentration, Then I stopped, I just concentrated on my abs movement, your upper and lower level rotate with your abs movement, stronger abs, higher knee, faster arm movement, you are using the abs to help upper and lower part to move efficient and also taking some of the load off them when engaging your abs.
Next time try engaging your abs more and see how your arms and legs will move faster with less work. Try standing and move up your Knee then touch your abs, it is the abs holding some of that weight, when abs are engaged fully , it helps your hip and leg movement plus the upper body.
I just started running and the thing that sores the most are abs, been a week since I started and my abdominal area is much more firm than when I was just doing gym excersices
Who was that mystery, shades wearing presenter? Too cool for school xxx😊🤣❤️... ooooo, posted too soon, it’s Heather!
My friends all got six packs and called me trash, I gonna need 8 packs now.
I think you can’t get abs just from running itself.
It’s a combination of a healthy diet, as well as other exercises (like push ups, crunches, weight). You can’t expect to run, eat mcdonalds and find a six pack.
To help with my depression
Abs are made in the kitchen, and it’s not always necessarily healthy but for aesthetics
"Abs are made in the kitchen"
- I see
Ah Heather, I wish you could meet my wife. You’d be inspirational to her 😀
"I wish you could meet my wife. You’d be inspirational to her"
- I bought a commercial treadmill last year. My wife thinks I bought it for myself, but I actually bought it to get her running and toned. It worked, and she's looking great. Oh, and I use it also and I personally recommend a treadmill to anyone, especially good for doing an easy run as you can maintain the same pace throughout (no chance of going out too quick or speeding up during the run).
Visible abs aren't just about training and low body fat. A lot of it is genetics.
Good excuse is worth a coin.
@@pavolhorvath7850 Not really. I am one of those people with abs and a relatively speaking 'higher' fat percentage. You don't have to be absolutely shredded if you have genetics on your side. Sure I train and as a hybrid athlete I have the advantage in the 'looks like she works out' department. But if I stored my fat on my upper body, if I wasn't tall and if I had a delicate build, dude I wouldn't have abs.
Yes no????
Everyone has abs but when they become clearly defined and obvious that’s where injuries/illness will end up following
this is only really true for woman
GET to the point!!!
No your diet does
Which is eating fruits?
Also, why can I plank so damn long, but I'm not some monster at crunches? Maybe I am. I can seriously plank forever, but I don't have a crazy six pack and I'm pretty lean.
ugh, can we stop sugar coating? "We want you to be healthy, let's not focus on weight loss. If weight loss happens, great". If you can't at least see faint abs, you probably have too high of belly fat which is unhealthy. I understand most of us are in that boat, but hey, most of us should lose weight.
