This video shows the process of cleaning of Ricoh Gen4 (also known as Hitachi Gen4) print head with Print Head Doctor 4. The machine is capable of doing 3 methods of flushing in just one setup: Thru-head flushing, Reverse flushing with a suction method, and Forward flushing.
Thru-head flushing will run the fluid through the print head without creating any pressure inside it. This is the best way to remove the big chunks of ink from the insides of the print head.
Reverse flushing with a suction method creates a vacuum in the print head ports, sucking the fluid through the print head. Fluid from the tank will enter the nozzles first, then it will move the contaminants upward and out of the print head.
Forward flushing moves the fluid in a normal (forward) direction, pressurizing the print head. Fluid exits the print head only through the nozzles. This will finalize the print head cleaning process. Note that it's important not to exceed a certain pressure inside a print head or otherwise it may damage a print head.
