Beginner's Guide to Vintage PCs on a Budget. Part 1: Tools, Peripherals, and Software

- I want to help as many people get into this hobby, I love vintage PCs, and I know lots of other people who love them too! The largest hurdle to this hobby is usually cost, not part availability. This first part of the series may not delve into the budget aspect as much, but throughout the next few parts, I will be detailing how to get into this hobby on a low, or nonexistent budget!

i used to find broken pc's in the garbage on bulk night and frankenstien together some decent pcs overclock them and stuff.that's how i got into computers they always fascinated me but i was poor lol
segway, saw in one of your other videos you had like a semi huge supply of ram sticks, how do you manage those? How do you know what types you have and what you don't have ? trial and error and/or reading labels for each and every ? Are you only relying on getting sticks from old computers or are you also rummaging eBay for such components like cpus and ram sticks ?
Every stick of RAM I own has come from old computers that I've found in the trash. There is an awful lot of compatibility issues with these old PCS, and specific RAM compatibility is not always listed. The main culprits are speed and rank, Intel for example, doesn't really like 2Rx8 in a lot of their boards, and they're also very iffy on 128Rx64. Timing can also occasionally crop up its ugly head. To combat this, I have thousands upon thousands of sticks of RAM to choose from, so I can always just keep trying different speeds and ranks until I find something that works.
This isn't as much of a problem in modern PCS, anything newer than the 5xxx series from Intel is much less picky on ram.
Compatibility aside though, I love building and messing with old computers, but I only make like 22,000 a year. I genuinely can't afford it's by anything other than the most necessary pieces on eBay, which is why I hoard any computer components I find on the side of the road. If you drive around town on garbage day, you can often find two or three computers on the side of the road, you just have to do it early in the morning because I guarantee you there's other people doing exactly the same thing. Ram, hard drives, power supplies, even graphics cards. I've got massive Rubbermaid containers stuffed to the brim with just about every conceivable component. The downside of this is I can't use my spare bedroom, my office, and an awful lot of my living room. The upside? I almost never have to pay for any computer parts. I actually gave away about 70 computers last year, as I genuinely ran out of room and it became such a problem that I actually started having trouble moving around my apartment... So it's always important to strike a balance between having enough parts on hand to not have to pay for things on eBay, and not becoming a hoarder lol
