I love it when Ken has the arguments with the women and when he shouts too. William Roache is a great actor.
Its pretty insane to think this man has spent his whole life on this soap. Absolute legend.
It's not as uncommon as you think. Take the Case of US Soap Actor Don Hastings. He started out on a Radio Show called Captain Video, then was on The Edge Of Night from 1956-1960 but it was his Role as Dr. Bob Hughes on As The World Turns that gave him his longest tenure. He played the Role Non Stop from 1960 to 2010. Also, in the week before it's cancellation Julianne Moore who played Two Characters Frannie Hughes & Sabrina Fullerton came back as Frannie. Did you know that US Comedian Kevin Hart visited The Cobbles and Poured A Pint.

Yes quite a few Americans watch the show and they love it. They find a Realism that they don't always see on US Soaps. One of my all time favorite scenes was from the 1960's where Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner got into it and Ena smashed The Window. Ena was so Gangsta.

@@Ben6164 American soaps are not as depressing as British ones, which all take place in boring little backstreets where people have no aspirations.
Great chemistry between Ken and Joanna Lumley! That woman radiates class and sensuality.
Good gracious, my mother was a devoted fan of this programme especially Elsie Tanner and Eric Barlow. Ena Sharples and Hilda Ogden. We only had two channels of tv at the time and in black and white of course. I am 65 years old and not in my dotage but watching these scènes I can remember the stage names of many of the actors. Oh that's Annie Walker and that's Betty, there's Albert Tatlock etc...I've lived in France and Belgium for many years now and haven't followed it for years. But since lockdown in France I have been catching up on my past and hoping for a future.
Janet wasn't a nice character but her suicide was very sad. It made me decide to become a mental health nurse.
Loved that scene of ken and joanna lumley. She looked fantastic.

In reality someone like Ken Barlow with his education and idealism would have upped sticks and left Coronation Street as early as 1962 to live in the city never to return.

Very true. It seems unlikely that someone like Ken would have remained in Weatherfield. He would have moved into the middle class long ago.......

@@yessumyessum6624 I don't know if he said it explicitly, but when arguing with Deirdre about her affair with Dev, he compared himself to Mike who was (in contrast) a go-getter.
What gets me is how self-conscious Ken has always felt about his background. Characters with such shaky self-esteem are quite rare nowadays in Corrie. Sure it's used for comedy like Sally trying to be posh, but it's not the same thing.
Every time I think of Ken, I can't help paraphrasing what they say in Wayne's World about Keith Richards: "Ken can't be killed by conventional weapons"
Thoughally enjoyed watching all these early eps of corrie. Was real good storylines and acting

I wish that Don Hastings (Ex-Dr. Bob Hughes) from As The World Turns could do a one on one talk with Bill Roache. Don played his Character from 1960-2010 when the show got cancelled. Julianne Moore played his Daughters Frannie Hughes/Sabrina Fullerton from 1983-1986 and came back during the last week of the show's Broadcast.

Ken Barlow/William Roach was a serving soldier (Trucial Oman Scouts) before becoming an actor and was injured in a mortar explosion near the Liwa Oasis in the present day UAE.
Rita and Ken??? I never knew about that involvement.

William Roache as Ken Barlow is the only remaining original cast and character in Corrie from 1960.

It's too Bad that Proctor & Gamble couldn't take a Page and do a Deal with Time-Life and do DVD's on US Soap Operas that are no longer on The Air such as Guiding Light, Another World, and As The World Turns.
There's a lot to be said for letting your hair dry naturally.
Valerie was much cleverer than Ken, who was just a mediocre swot.
Val was so bright, imaginative and gorgeous, and, deep down, the ghastly Ken envied her.

Don’t know how Ken lasted so long in Corrie, he was a very unlikeable character, selfish, arrogant, who thought he was better than everyone, rather like Prince Andrew.
Great stuff, really enjoyed this, Great to watch. No one will match or overtake Ken's life on the street, only one left from where it began in 1960, Other 2 longest characters left are Emily & Rita. Would be nice to see life of Gail

Oh this brings back memories , my mum died in 1971 and I remember watching Val’s death in bed with mum , I was nearly 10 years old and we both loved Corrie . Such bitter sweet memories, RIP mum 🕊️. Loved all these old characters , and God Bless Bill Roach he’s a national institution…. By the way, I remember hating Janet , this hasn’t changed my mind 😂

The Elaine Perkins thing is amazing; could never have worked because she was more than a match for him in every way - including acting - they kind of cancelled each other out.

danielroxheaps The life and loves of Elsie Tanner was the first time a clip show had been made about just one character - it was done when actress Pat Phoenix died, however, this was forgotten about when Dennis Tanner returned to the street.
I think that's where the idea came from, but rather than get actors to do scenes to link everything together, they decided to hire the one person as a narrator.

I don't know how it is with UK Actresses but for US Actors and Actresses, a lot of them get their Foot in The Door by Doing Soap Operas. At the time she was one of Ken's Girlfriends. Three Desperate Housewives, Olivia Pope's Father from Scandal and even Fergie's Husband Josh Duhamel was on A Soap.
Joanna Lumley had already done several films by the time Coronation Street came around for her, including On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Jonathan Middleton This was pre her doing 'The New Avengers' as Purdey and after she did Bond. She was a model before she was an actress!

Been watching the 80s coronation st and I must say Ken Barlow was the least natural actor on set. Even his entrance into a room was totally contrived. Other actors put him completely in the shade.........
