  • In 1995, Julie Goodyear decided to leave the Street after 25 years. This video is a long edit, or supercut, of her departure story.
The fictional brewery, Newton and Ridley, decided to sell the Rovers and they offered Bet first refusal to buy. Bet knew she could never afford the money and finally turned to Rita, one of her closest friends, to go into partnership with Rita offering to invest. Rita began to get doubts when Bet confirmed to Ken (only after Mavis suggested Rita was up for it) that Rita wanted to go ahead with it. Rita turned to Alf for advice and had to tell Bet she was pulling out. What followed was one of the most devastating, and electric, scenes ever shown with Bet and Rita having a furious exchange. Their decade long friendship in tatters.
Bet then turned to Vicky, but Vicky turned her down. Vicky then offered to buy Bet a house instead, but Bet was furious. In a fit of anger, she turned on Vicky and threw her out of the Rovers along with the rest of the regulars. After the theatrics of her anger, Bet left the Rovers quietly after having one final goodbye with Don (why not Betty, Jack, Raquel, or Mike I will never know). She left in a taxi, and had no idea where she was headed to, but left smiling (as she always did) and on her own terms at least. It transpired that Bet ended up in Tenerife.
I've seen contemporary press reports that Julie was disappointed at Bet's departure story. I don't know if that was true, of course. But we did get some truly outstanding performances from Julie, and Barbara Knox. I like to think that this was Bet's definitive ending, and not the early 2000s appearances. She was one of British TV's most iconic characters, and Julie is an icon. Thanks, cock.
