On my first parachute jump, this device (a Czechoslovak KAP-3P clone to be exact) failed because the cable tied to the safety pin was not attached to the parachute pull cable at the other end. Fortunately, we jumped at manual opening and only found out about the problem when we packed the parachute again. I still wear that safety pin on my keys today :)

mechanism is triggered by removal of safety pin; pressure chamber blocks mechanism from triggering (after removal of pin) before desired altitude is reached during descent.

The tagline is wrong - it's a safety device used to back you up should you fail to activate the parachute.
You also have the reserve with yet another safety device in case your main fails.
And in a military-style setup your reserve is on your belly, so if it fails to deplay too, you'd just deploy it with your hands.
This way it takes not two, but three failures to reach the ground without a canopy over you - both chutes AND you should fail.

Park tools produces thin wrenches for bicycles. They should work on that device.
More tool information: Hollow ground flat screwdrivers used on firearms will work better on those screws.
    Thanks for the teardown video.

so this guy went from tearing down stupid printers to tearing down missile guidance heads, gyros and aerospace tech gadgets in ten years and I have absolutely gone nowhere lol. Tearing down packets of snacks to feed my fat arse I do.

If you had pulled the cable out at the parachute end and put a spacer or a vice-grip plier in the way to prevent it returning it would have tensioned the spring enough to replace the damper easily.
Also using the locked spring holder swivel cap to turn the spring barrel may have worked.
I think with the timer safety armed the unit ignores the altitude. When the safety is pulled it will count down the programmed time and THEN wait for the pressure to increase and withdraw the pin and release the spring.
It seems odd that the timer has to be armed by opening the cover, I wonder if it is armed when tensioning the spring and the safety pin is inserted when the timer has the correct delay and then the spring is pulled into the latched position. There should be a quick way to reset these in the field with the special apparatus without having to open the unit.
