In German the black man is the boogeyman, the fear of the unknown, also an old child's play.
The song is about the fear mongering media, also about fear of migration, heated up by the media.
    Rammstein is genius.

    • @BemusingBill
      @BemusingBill  Před 4 měsíci +13

Thank you! Had I known it meant boogeyman I would have gone with my initial instinct of refugees. Yah, the media! so much fear mongering for the sake of ratings (or because of political agenda or both) makes things so much worse. Genius indeed! Much love🤘❤️🤘

    • @Linus1871
      @Linus1871 Před 2 měsíci +2

The complete truth is that the media is actually doing the opposite. They are pretending that everything is not as bad as it seems, while in reality we do have massive issues with migration. The way Rammstein did this is genius and it surely leaves some room for speculations. The fact that people are bringing topics like this up after listening to this song is not a coincidence.

Schwartze mann means something like boogeyman. Rammstein are amazing. I recommend their live performances - Engel or Ich tu dir weh.

    • @vornamenachname9905
      @vornamenachname9905 Před 4 měsíci

As usual Rammstein is playing here with a double meaning - and beyond. "Schwarzer Mann" is as well the bogeyman but also "foreign people", people who are different, and so on. Media / governments, and others tells us to be afraid so they can control the public.

    • @MeZuMix
      @MeZuMix Před 4 měsíci +11

Yes, "black man" doesn't refer to skin color.
It describes an unknown figure that is scary. Like a figure in the night where you can only see tones of black. You can't see it clear and it could be dangerous. Also, death is often related to it.
Additionally, the term is a kids play "Wer hat angst form schwarzen Mann?" (How is afraid of the black man?). They often use terms that are innocent and add a dark side to it. (Like the dark original fairytales in Germany. )

Great reaction! Very happy to see you reacting with subtitles :) it's very important to understand the lyrics when it comes to Rammstein!
I hope you'll react to more!
Btw, Rammstein is not only the biggest metal band in Germany but one of the biggest in the world at the moment. They'll continue their Europe Stadium Tour this year and they sold out 60k-70k stadiums in minutes at the presale. (I'll see them 4 times 😊)
You should also see their live performances, they're out of this world.
This year is their 30 year band anniversary and they've published 8 studio albums - so you've got tons of good stuff to dive into!

Rammstein celebrates their 30th band anniversary this year. The same 6 members from the start. Yes, I guess there is a lot for you to discover. It will definitely be worth it. They are great on many levels. Great sound, cinematic videos, lyrics that offer many interpretations and, last but not least, the best live show you can experience.

Hi there from an old guy from Germany. Though I'm German I didn't know much about Rammstein until three years ago when I watched a CZcams reaction to "Du hast". I liked the song instantly and decided to give them a chance and could honestly not believe what I experienced. They have created so many masterpieces over the years that it is even hard to tell a personal top 10 ranking, there are just too many. The music and videos and live performances are almost always great and different, topics and lyrics are sometimes dark or weird.
I could easily give you 40 songs which are as good as "Angst" but for the start I recommend the following:
    Zeit (time, official video)
Ich will (I want, live Hurricane Festival 2016)
Rammlied (Rammsong, live Madison Square Garden)
    Mutter (Mother, live Paris)
Mein Herz brennt Piano Version (My heart burns, Piano version, official video)
Du riechst so gut (You smell so good, live Hellfest 2016)
Ohne dich (Without you, official video)
    Klavier (Piano, live Berlin 1998)
    Puppe (Doll, live 2019)
    Adieu (Goodbye, official video)

Who's afraid of the Bogeyman is Child's Play in Germany! Don't let the Bogeyman catch you.
Traced back to the Plague, the black Death!
People were afraid of an infected Person and didn't want to be touched!
    Wikipedia says:
The Black Man is based on the mythical Figure of the same Name, who appears in European Folklore as an ominous frightening Figure, but also as a personification of Death, e.g. in the embodiment as the Black Death. Medievalists and cultural Historians attribute the Game principle and the centuries-old Game tradition to the Plague and the Death dances of the Middle Ages associated with it.
The Game, which originated in Central Europe, spread to neighbouring Regions and later worldwide as part of the 19th century emigration flows
If you don't know much about Rammstein yet, I would definitely recommend their Live Performances!
    For Example
Ich tue dir weh (Live from Madison Square Garden)
Waidmanns Heil (Live from Madison Square Garden)
    Weiner Blut
The Song - Rammstein (Live in Moscow 2019)
or .......! There are sooo many great Songs!
    The Videos:
    Keine Lust (No desire)
    Zeit (Time)
    are highly recommended

Rammstein's songs often have several interpretations. The band also rarely gives an explanation. So it's up to the listener to find their own personal interpretation. In the video, I see cheerleaders, weapons and a crazy guy with wild hair behind a lectern. All things that are not very common in Germany.

Angst means fear, in German. The song itself is about how media (MSM or social) fuels peoples fear of strangers, or those that think differently. Rammstein is an amazing band with a great deal of social commentary in their music.
Du Hast, you have to watch the Paris Live version, his crowd control is exceptional. That song is about how we have loyalty to various things (country, friends, spouse, but it may not necessarily be returned.)

The “Black Man” is the boogieman in German but of course it is also a play on words. The song, in my opinion is indirectly about refugees, but mainly in the context of the fact that the media (especially social media) makes you afraid of everything so that they can then benefit from the fear, be it materially or ideologically.
At the end it also shows how color comes back into life when you switch off the media.
By the way, what they eat there at the end was called a “Negerkuss”. They no longer be called that today, they are now called “foam kisses” or “chocolate kisses” or under the sales name “Dickmann’s".

It’s not your fault that the translation leads to misinterpretation of the lyrics. This is where problems arise. The sort of translation is Boogeyman. It comes from a children’s song, sort of warning them about the boogeyman. Fear of the unknown rather than the erroneous (but, I admit natural) assumption of ‘fear of the black man’…. Racism.

The "black man" translates as "Bogeyman"

  • @francescapatti2934

"Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" (Who is afraid of the "black man" is a childrens game in germany.
    Its basically like playing tag.*
Idk if its origins are rooted in racism, but usually children inagine a shadow person when playing.
Although it has since been changed in most schools Ive worked in, and is now "Wer hat Angst vorm Schattenmann" meaning "who is afraid of the shadow man"
Which is probably more logical anyway, since everyone was alread envisioning a shadowy figure😂.
*HOW IT WORKS (if anyones curious)
Basically one kid will stand on one end of the field/courtyars. This is the shadow man.
The other kids will stand opposite from the shadow man shoulder to shoulder.
The game starts when the Shadow says "Wer hat Angst vorm Schattenmann?" (Who fears the shadow man?)
    The kids respond: "NIEMAND" (nobody!)
Shadow: "Und wenn er aber kommt?" (And if he comes?)
Kids: "Dann laufen wir davon!" (Then we run away)
    And then they start running.
The Shadow man has to catch as many kids as possible.
The kids objective is to get into the Shadow mans territory (usually marked somehow), so they are safe.
This goes on until the Shadow man has captured everyone if I remember correctly.

not rooted in racism at all. 'black man' has nothing to do with ethnicity. it's just the boogeyman/demon that has been portrayed as a pitch black figure since before there was common knowledge of sub saharan africa and it's people.

There is a definite streak of racism that runs through this song, in its message. In German, the Schwartzenman is the boogeyman, who haunts naughty children. But the literal translation is "the black man." Also, I wasn't aware of this until someone told me: the popsicles they're eating at the end used to have a racist name (containing the N-word) until they changed it. That's the attention to detail that Rammstein uses in their videos, it's incredible.

Is it about racism or is it about refugees? Yes.
I also love the colors here. Red representing fear, but also red black and white being nazi and neonazi colors representing the far right propaganda and fearmongering. And much much more as usual. The song is awesome. You should also check "Deutschland" the lyrics are deep and you get an awesome metal trip through germans history.

Originally "black man" stands for a kind of bogeyman (or death) in German. There is an old catch and run children's game. One child is the "black man", starting with the phrase "Who's afraid of the black man?". The others answer "No one." ... "And when he comes?" ... "Then we run." The children run away and try to escape the "black man". When one is catched, it is the next "black man". I guess that's originated from medivial time when the plague (or "black death") killed half of the population of Europe. Infected people partly got a black skin and and children were told to stay away from them.
Nevertheless Rammstein is playing with the double meaning of "black man". Some politicians and media spread fear about refugees comming to Europe. And even though most of them are not black, they might look a bit different and give a trigger to xenophobia ... which those politicians try to use for their own goals. So "crazy" politicians (one of the two roles, Till plays in the video) and indifferent media just seeking for attention are a dangerous combination. (That is at least my interpretation.)

Thank you, my friend! I was thinking this had more to do with refugees but the lousy translation seemed more specific. I really appreciate the info. Knowledge is power! Much more Rammstein to come 🤘❤️🤘

OK, I think I'm owed some royalties, because this video was obviously plagiarized from my nightmares. Yikes lol. Reminds me a little of Nightwish's video for the song "Noise," in terms of wild, apocryphal visuals and deep meaning Noise is about our seemingly cradle-to-grave obsession with our cell phones and social media. Very popular video with the Army, hint, hint.

@@BemusingBill You're welcome, Bill. "Tribal" is another great track from that album, probably the most metal. Kai brought in extra drums for the ending, and you can really hear it. Peace, brother.

Please dear Bill, if you really want to learn something, learn to probounce 'Rammstain' and 'Angst' the correct way 😁 this song has nothing to do with racism at all, as they already commented, the schwarze Mann is like the boogey man. Love you 🩷💜💪🏻🤘🏻

Hi Cristy. Yes, wrong wrong wrong. But that's why I rely on you to help me get on the right foot. I'm an American and a New Yorker which means I don't even pronounce English correctly. Thanks to all the Rammstein fans for teaching me the meaning behind the song, although I gathered it was fear mongering from the media and politicians against whatever 'boogeyman' they might want to conjure up. When the subtitle says, "Black Man" I was surprised to be honest. How would I know? But now I do. So, I hope you can forgive me as I make these mistakes. Just grateful to have you have my back! Love you ❤️❤️
