Sonne was originally written as entrance music for the boxer Vitali Klitschko. Unfortunately, his management team decided the song was too heavy and they rejected it. So, Sonne and the video were born with Snow White as the sunshine for the dwarves who mine gold for her to use in her own inimitable way. It's a toxic relationship that cannot end as the dwarves are lost without their sunshine despite the cruel way they're treated by her. They are shown in dull shades while she is colourful and bright. Even after her apparent death, they are sworn to.protect her forever. Sadly for them, this doesn't happen and the trouble starts all over again.
Wow! That's such a great analysis. Put that way, I can clearly see that. My wife and I were talking this over after the video. She said this is the first song that had her thinking about the meaning for hours and she basically came up with what you said. This is what I love about Rammstein- they make you think about their art and not just dismiss it as just fun or funny. It goes deep! Thank you so much!
@@BemusingBill There is an alternative meaning that was planned for the music video, but they decided not to go with it. In the alternative meaning, the song start on the Enola Gay after they drop the bomb, and start counting 10 seconds to the explosion. The sond counts from 1 to 10, and at 10 the song suddenly stops when the bomb explodes.
“Sonne” live is simply bombastic. The light show and pyro makes it unforgettable.

For all simplicity this song is an experience, kind of hypnotic. Especially live - they pull out all stops, fire all the pyro at every number in the count.

I saw a mini-docu where they said the video was conceived of after the fact, so the song wasn't written with this imagery in mind. They just needed a vid when they released Sonne as a single. I think it might be on their channel - "The Making Of .. " or somesuch. Anyway, it's worth a look, and it's not long. The high note section isn't sung - it's a synth patch. Always gets a cheer live though, and there are a number of live versions on YT. Again, check their own channel.

Hi there. Yeah, "die Sonne" is feminin in German, so when Google refers to "she" it would actually be "the" in english. At least for this specific song.

Edit: This is not even close to the original version of the Brothers Grimm. Snow White does not exploit the dwarfs and they didn't poison her (tbh it's really not worth mentioning it). In fact, the dwarfs saved her life three times from death caused by the Evil Queen.
The original Grimm version (not the Disney version) is still a bedtime story for our kids today. I don't want to go down deeper into that rabbit hole though. German bedtime stories can literally be disgusting.

I don't know if anyone else has seen this angle as well, but the story I'm getting is that this is a biting commentary on today's men simping for women who don't give a sh*t about them aside from what the guy(s) can give them in exchange for minimal effort. Guy gives girl everything (all the gold they mine) and in return she gives them attention (in the form of abuse) that they just live for. And, in the end, when they 'man up' and get rid of the woman they realize they literally have no life and when she returns they all just go right back to same abusive relationship. LOL this is the version of Snow White that Disney was too afraid to tell! Brilliant work from first to last.

I like your video. From all I know, this song is about ambiguity - towards the sun and towards the woman, its a love-hate relationship. The high pitch voice is a sample. I recommend "Engel - live from MSG", "Mein Herz brennt" official Video of the Pianoversion and "Ohne dich" (the video)
There is a lot of levels going on here: the original intent of the music, the added lyrics after the fact and what they were talking about and now this video that takes the story in another direction. This song has a dark background story: other commentators already explained that the music was originally written for a boxer's entrance on the ring, but his management didn't like it. Rammstein recycled the project and added lyrics.
The original Sonne clip was about nuclear war. The band members are sitting in the cockpit of the Enola Gay, on their way to Hiroshima. The survivors of the nuclear bombing said that the explosion was like the light of a thousand suns. Here comes the sun: we are bringing nuclear fire to your city. This sun will burn your chest, your eyes, your hands and it won't go down tonight, fire hurricanes will obliterate everything.
They count 1 to 10, from the moment the nuke is released to the moment it explodes (in real life it took 43 seconds). The project was abandoned, Rammstein thought it might be misinterpreted and hurtful for japanese survivors. When they perform this song live and you hear heavenly voices, the whole band kneels: they pay homage to the victims of the bomb. Since they abandoned the project out of respect for Japan, they turned the video clip into a twisted version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but didn't change the lyrics, that are still in the context of a nuclear bombing.

i like your reactions a lot. you said you wanted to see some more live performances and you seemed to like the darkness of Mein Teil so i supect you'll love Wiener Blut (2009) and Puppe (2019). despite having a lot of songs with dark themes, these three are probably their darkest songs, especially Wiener Blut which (like Mein Teil) is based on a true story.
