Norco Sight VS Norco Optic Head to Head

  • I hear a lot of people wondering if they should buy a Norco Sight or Optic as their next trailbike. It's a fair question- the two bikes can be built up pretty similarly after all. But no matter how many modifications you do, the bikes both ride very differently, and excel in different areas.
    In this video I compare the two bikes head to head, on the ideal trail for each bike, and describe the differences in feel, responsiveness, and performance. The goal here is to help you identify what your riding style is, and which bike caters best to that style.
    My conclusion, put very simply, is that if you like to spend as much time as possible playing around in the air, the Optic will do that best, and if you want to have the fastest times and the most control, the Sight is your bike.
    Thanks for watching, and if you have any video suggestions, please don't hesitate to comment!

    Thanks for the vid, a lot of good info! Hi I recently got the sight i i was considering to get a coil shock. What's your opinion about it? Would you advise it? Is the frame progressive enough? Do you bottom out a lot? I don't make big jumps, i mostly stay with wheels well planted on the ground, however i ride mainly very rtocky terrain...flow trails are a rarity where i live.

      Hey there, thanks for the comment. I actually did a coil vs air comparison on the Sight, which you'll find in my videos list. Long story short, both air and coil have benefits, but I feel that overall air is slightly better.

    Great video, awesome riding and incredible speed you got up to 👍🏻.
    Great comparison and just what I was looking for.
    I currently have the Norco Fluid FS 1 and been thinking of upgrading.
    Initially I had the Sight in mind but but for my skill level I think I'd be well "overbiked".
    Would you think the Fluid and Optic are too similar a bike? I'm not sure if there'd be a big advantage upgrading to the Optic. I certainly don't ride rocky, techy trails and prefer flowy runs and I usually competing with my Strava PB and wonder if the Optic would shave some seconds of my times?
    Any feedback and advice would be appreciated thanks mate.

      Hey thanks for that! Glad you liked the video.
      I had a Fluid 29 a couple years ago and really liked it, but the Optic will 100% encourage you to ride faster and more aggressively... and it'll see you through safely as well. If you're looking to shave seconds off your PRs and just generally get more out of the trail I can't think of a better bike than the Optic.

      Encouraging words thanks mate. I'm keen on the Optic as my ONE mountain bike only problem here in Australia is that all stores are low in stock. Have to go onto a waiting list of about March next year. It sucks.
      Thanks mate and look forward to more vids

    Nice video....thanks for posting. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the 150mm upfork on the optic. Did you notice any downside to the change from the stock 140mm fork? I have a 2017 sight and buying a new sight or an optic when the dealers get stock again. I'm just not sure which to go with and have been considering the optic with 150mm fork. Thanks for you input.

      Hi Scott! Thanks! I thought my previous era Sight (2016-2019) was one of the best feeling bikes I'd ever ridden, right out of the box it was super fun and playful. I upforked the Optic to make the setup closer to that of the 2019 Sight and I think I got there pretty much exactly. The Optic is a little lighter, and actually performs better through high-speed rough sections (where the old Sight would tend to bounce more), and the new sizing makes the Optic a more roomy feeling bike too. If you love your current Sight and just want a more polished version of that, get a 2020+ Optic. The 150 fork (or longer air spring in the Pike) is a nice step but not 100% necessary to make the bike a hoot on the trail.

    Hey Derek, how have you been? Funny how the guy who sold me my 2013 Specialized Enduro has made a video comparing the 2 bikes I am trying to decide between now. I am still riding Hartland lots

    • @dsanfdsa1
      @dsanfdsa1  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Branden! Been a while man, thanks for reaching out!
      If you're riding Hartland the most often there's no comparison; the Optic is your bike. The trails there are so tight and twisty, the Optic will feel playful and nimble where Sight can just feel like a chore. (If you were spending more time at Prevost or Maple, or going over to the mainland, that could change, since the terrain is much more rough and high-speed.) For anything on the south island, the Optic will be plenty of bike, and will make the flatter/tighter trails more fun.

    Derek what do you think of the new optic? I live in Bend and have been debating an optic vs. a sentinel. I saw you rode it in the bike park, which is maybe 5 days a year for me. Any thoughts?

    • @dsanfdsa1
      @dsanfdsa1  Před 3 lety

      For Bend riding I'd 100% say the Optic. It'll be much much more fun for that type of terrain, corners especially. The Optic will feel much more playful and responsive, and will have more than enough travel for you. Even the occasional run down Redline or Rockfall would be awesome if you ran some bigger brakes than stock.

      @@dsanfdsa1 Awesome, I am leaning towards optic. the 2021 builds come with 203 F 180 R on brakes. They have a fox dpx2 build as well. I watched the video before but cant't remember, what is your height and what size bike are you on? I am 5'6" with riding shoes and sat on a medium and it felt good, but I didn't' get the opportunity to pedal it around.

      @@dsanfdsa1 Why is that? Rear is too much power? Btw i have a alloy frame A1 model 27.5 and was looking how the 180mm sits on rear isn't 220mm too much? I confirmed the 200mm will work on the rear.

    Are you running a 52.5 mm (Stock) or 55mm stroke on the Sight?

    • @dsanfdsa1
      @dsanfdsa1  Před 3 lety +1

      Depends on the shock. Certain (pre-2021) Fox air shocks and RS and Fox coil shocks have an "internal" 2.5mm bumper, meaning that you can run a 55mm stroke without bottomout issues. With the new DPX2 or a RS Superdeluxe I run 52.5.
