In the village of Baldwinville in Templeton, Massachusetts sits the remnants of a wooden furniture manufacturer, formerly known as the Temple-Stuart Company. Located on 23 acres (9.3 hectares) of land, the Temple-Stuart Company site once consisted of six total buildings; today, only two remain structurally intact. The company first occupied the site in 1910, operating for several decades up until its closure in 1993; shortly thereafter, the property was sold to the American Tissue Mills of Massachusetts. This was short-lived, however, as they would file for bankruptcy not long after. After so many decades of industrial manufacturing, the former Temple-Stuart Company site was littered with hazardous waste and materials, including topsoil contaminated with PCBs, as well as asbestos and other hazardous chemicals inside some of the buildings. By 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took over the site in an effort to clean up, removing contaminated soil and demolishing several buildings; this process lasted a couple years during the early 2000s. Today, only two buildings remain: a garage and a warehouse, and both are completely abandoned.
I was notified of this site by a viewer of the channel, so BIG shout out to you, and thank you! While there is admittedly not too much to see at this site--most of the buildings are completely empty and hollow--it is nonetheless a fascinating piece of history to experience. Like many of the other abandoned buildings I've explored on the channel, the former Temple-Stuart Company is yet another piece of Massachusetts's neglected industrial past, with only bare remnants left behind. The warehouse was quite interesting to see, serving almost as an empty canvas for local graffiti artists to express themselves on. The garage, while small, did have many interesting trinkets inside, even including some leftover remnants of the American Tissue Mills of Massachusetts (the most recent owner of the site). And, of course, the tall and looming water tower that still stands and surveys over the site was fun to check out up close. I had a great time exploring this unique abandoned site, and while not much was left, it was still worth a visit! Thanks man! You inspired me to get the DJI Mini 4 Pro, that was such a solid choice!
@@j-mass so happy to hear!!
Love the video J-MASS. Im glad you got to take the drone out on this video. I think those discs in the garage may have been like parts of spools for holding material or like guiding wheels on a conveyor belt. Looking at some old pictures, I think the buildings were all demolished 2001-2003 during EPA cleanup but there were some massive buildings there before then. The big concrete pad had a building that was built in between 1938 and 1968 but I think it was built in the late 50s. The big empty building was built between 1971 and 1986. The garage was also built in the 50s or 60s
Thanks man! Yeah, I was also thinking they were once used for spools, I just couldn’t confirm. Interesting history about the other buildings as well! I saw some old photos, and you’re right-they were huge!
Great to see this place on here. Been here many times. My dad and my uncle worked for American Tissue Mills back from 1990 until they went bankrupt in the mid-late 90’s. They both happened to work at the temple Stuart site (which was just a rewind plant for the other mill they had right up the street from this one) Also, those two concrete structures you pointed out are silo foundations from the 2 sawdust silos they used to have!
Wow, interesting stuff-thanks so much for sharing!
You were also correct about there being other buildings. There used to be one that connected to the one that’s still standing that covered that whole concrete foundation (you can see where the old roof used to be on the outside) and there were 2 other ones next to it. The building that remains was used to store massive spools of paper they made and where as you pointed out, they were shipped from. It also used to be 2 floors but the 2nd was demolished when the EPA came in due to it being an extreme hazard from it caving in.
Yeah, I remember seeing some pictures of the site prior to the EPA’s cleanup and demolition… it was pretty interesting to see how it looked with the other buildings up. Would’ve been cool to explore those before they were razed!
Everyone’s noticed already but I can’t help but say how awesome those drone shots are!
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Definitely a spot I’ve never seen or heard of! I’m surprised!
j-mass lets gooooo
Thanks bro! 🙌
Dope
Thanks! It was a pretty dope spot to explore!
Are there any pictures of this before the EPA cleared out most of the property?
I believe so, if you look it up on Google or on the EPA’s website, I believe there are a few photos of the other buildings prior to demolition
Nice you made it
Yessir, it was a lot of fun to check out!
Yo, you were right behind my house. That’s crazy.
I’m a trucker when I was in mass I live in Missouri right now whatever I dropped off a couple loads here in 2004 I’d say I just got the job it was a sully my second ever delivery in mass at least I don’t remember what it was that got dropped off all I know it was a tissue factory and closed in 2005 I’d say that’s all I know
Interesting, thanks for the insight into this!
