For the past few months, we have been trying out the Vittoria Air-Liner (a flat protection system similar to Cush-Core) and we're sharing our thoughts today. Summary: we're pretty into it as it's easier to install than some other systems we have tried and seems to offer pretty good rim protection!
We've been using the Vittoria Air-Liner for over three months now and are really impressed. They're light, easy to install, provide tons of protection and are reasonably priced.

I just ordered an insert, shocked that code still works 3 years later. I think the vittoria is the only insert that fits my oddball 26+ tires and is priced very competitively after that 20 off.
Code is toast
Way to go I absolutely love the thoughtfulness and teamwork of your explanations.
I have been reading and watching and reading and watching everything I can find on going tubeless. This is something that really makes me consider it. Most videos I watch, and seriously, might as well just use tubes.
Thanks guys !
Jeff
Never thought "pool noodles" will be the new thing
Pool noodles are closed cell structures. Airliners are open cell, the liner collapses under air pressure but bounces back when pressure is lost. This is why the sealent can still work 👍
Are you guys still loving these?? Love your content and getting “SEND IT” for the family for Christmas.
Yup, the airliners are great! Thanks for backing the project!!!
That cat should be sponsored as well. He likes looking at cameras as much as I do.
Don’t have difficulty installing the nukeproof one. Just bought one of these for the change to summer tyres and looking forward to that.
Cool might try them out👍🏼
I use a bit of dishwashing liquid around the tyre bead. It helps the tyre pop up on the bead evenly all around the rim
What happened at 5:42 ? why did you skip the hardest part of rimming a tire ? that was the part I wanted to see. I can only guess that was hard and included lots of foul words.
Oh, c'mon, they need to advertise "easiness of inserts installing", no time for reality.
Glaring omission lol
Here's the link to the Air-Liner: www.vittoria.com/us/air-liner-accessories.html
Just ordered! Thanks for the discount and the video! Looking forward to the new setup. Been looking at cushcore for a long time but havent wanted to make that large of an investment in the product. Hoping this provides me with support and protection I'm looking for.
I tried the Cushcore and it didn’t go well. Getting them on the rim wasn’t the problem. Getting the tire was a nightmare. Ruined the tire bead. & had to get new tires. Took of to my bike shop. & they even had a really hard time.
Hey all, discount code is for all the products, so if you wanna get the Morsa tires too, save some doh
Thanks for the discount code, but only the “small” is available on their website! Nice scam, Vittoria...
They keep selling out of the other sizes. This isn't the first time they've been out of stock of at least one size (or in this case 3 of the 4 sizes). Keep checking back and hopefully they'll have them again soon!
Hi both.
Congrats on the wedding.
Bit of feed back for you on the airliner.
I put one in the other weekend with a new Maxxis high roller 2 & went back to the trail that has ripped the side wall out of 2 of my back tyres.
I started with 30p.s.i & it felt like i was on ice so down to 28p.s.i & it felt better but not brill. The track has a lot of slat & sharp rocks so was thinking don't go to low on the p.s.i.
At the end of the day i checked the tyre over & all was good.
Next trail will be a muddy one so will drop the P.S.I down to 26 & see how the airliner feels ??
Right on! Glad it worked well for you! We think they're the bomb!
The kitty was the star of this video
Obviously 🐱
I wonder if you mean the cat or Syd? ;)
for a second I was hoping your cool new piece of gear would be a tripod.
Ok, you guys have swung it for me so well done on your review and congratulations to your sponsors Vittoria! 2x air liners purchased and will try them out as of this week.
As an important note for those struggling to install these: I did this on the workbench and hope I dont have to trailside as it is a bit of a struggle but you need to follow the instructions and MAKE SURE the first tyre bead DOES NOT seat on the rim. You MUST get the bead into the hollow of the wheel to allow room for the tyre to pop over the rim. Yes, I needed tyre levers but no undue force was needed.
That's a great note for people. Thanks for pointing it out!
SYD and MACKY I appreciate you state this at 4.40 in the video and again later on but this will be a the reason folk are struggling and having trouble through no fault of the product.
Where is the code for discount😁
I love Macky's assistant. :D
🐈
Just installed one in a 27.5x2.6 Mazza tire on the rear of my full suspension bike. The smoothness through rock gardens and on landings is way better than I had expected. Waiting to find one in stock so I can put one in the front as well. I was skeptical but this is a solid product. Relatively easy to install too.
Please tell me Jack is now your official van cat, 'cause that's absolutely adorable.
He belongs to Macky's parents but he is a van cat whenever he gets the opportunity
and here I am living in the stone age with my tubes 😝
Even without the Air-Liner, going tubeless is totally worth it!!!
nothing wrong with tubes man, I still use it.
I'm on tube and life is good!
once you go tubeless, you will never go back
I ride on asphalt so tube is great coz I run high psi
I have only seen one video so far that has a complete installation of the tire , every one on with the air liner video struggles and then they cut the video, you cannot do an instructional video if you skip an instruction. i want to know how hard it is to install the tire with the liner in.
So I just installed one tonight. Just rewatched this video because it was an absolute bitch to install and wanted to see how I failed, but nope they edited it out. Only way I got mine in was cutting about 1/4" of material off 3 sides with a bandsaw. I got the XL which is supposed to fit 2.7-4.0 tires (I have 26x2.75 on 50mm rim) and could not for the life of me get it mounted. Wrestled with it for at least 20 minutes before I decided to just cut some foam off.
more Jack :) nice job on the video, the instructional/demo stuff is great
I believe I have a comment that is worth mentioning in regards to the Vittoria air liner.
recently needed to replace rear tire and noticed that the airliner insert grew substantially in size.
I ended up having to trim about 3 inches as if I were installing a new liner. Then things assembled relatively well but not without some muscle.
Love the Vittoria brand, especially their tyres. ;)
Awesome. I just ordered one for the rear wheel with the discount code. Can't wait to try it out.
🤘👍
Been VERY stoked about this because they offer options for plus sized tires! May have to get a set for the Chromag. :D
Yas!! 🙌
Great video and it really helped me with my installation. The tip about getting the bead of the tyre in the centre of the rim saved my install as I was really struggling due to this (hence my CZcams search for Victoria airliner install). Many thanks.
Good idea... It usually takes me half a day to find my valve.
Great informative video and you guys are pretty mechanical inclined. However I find it funny that you do a lot of your bike work on just the plain ground with nothing underneath of you like a piece of cardboard or some sort of tarp to help keep dirt and debris from entering? I guess I'm just nitpicking I would assume you should be extra clean
We spend so much time living out of our van that we just got used to working on our bikes wherever we happened to be!
Nice informative video by a nice couple. Thank you. I enjoyed it.
AWESOME guys, good video, i WANT the this system ,i will try buy one this week for online, thank you
Let us know what you think!
+SYD and MACKY , sure i let you guys,i follow you,i want to watch The Next video The Next week, have fun, thank you 👍
How often do you replace them? Are they able to be reused with multiple tire changes?
Be careful as some tire sealants have ethylene glycol which is sweet so attractive to pets but extremely poisonous even in small doses. Keep your kitty safe.
Fortunately Jack doesn't seem at all interested in the sealant, but thanks for the heads up!
Why not just use a lightweight tube with Stan's or Bontrager sealant inside the tube? Quick and easy and it works.
I think I may want to try this on my enduro bike. I have a compressor at home so I don't need the charger but I like that valve core remover tool by Slime.
It's pretty awesome!
i am waiting for a tire that you install and then inflate with some sort of foam....the foam hardens a bit so that punctures are no longer an issue....basically install a bike tire just one time for the life of the tire. i will deal with an extra couple of pounds to never have to worry about flats again
Ummm, tubeless and sealant...
Another interesting vid guys and Jack the bike rack cat added fun to this vid lol
Looking good in your apron macky. Great vlog. Stay safe
😁
Does Jack get a full intro? I like the perch on the bike rack for Jack!!
I have tried and you really can't do this without a cat!
True!
Excellent review - thanks!
This is great and you wonder where all the foam can be reused for !
Nice teamwork
way to edit out 5:40 the struggle of getting the last bead over the top of the rim. I came to confirm if it would make installing tubeless a pain in the A due to the green foam in the way of the center channel of tubeless rims that allow you to easily get tubes on and being you edited it out i would guess in was a monster PIA
It is a bit harder that getting it on without a rim protector, but significantly easier than Cush Core. I'd say it takes maybe 60 seconds longer than it does without anything in there. We edited it out because if we hadn't, everyone would have complained that the video was too long. That's the thing about CZcams, someone's always going to complain 🤷♂️
Sounds like a great addition to the rig!
Was it carbon or alu rim that got dented ? Also, how is your tire pressure compared to no liner?
I'm assuming you've figured out since making this vid that you always finish putting on the bead *at* the valve with tubeless tires. [Since the valve prevents the bead from getting into the center channel.]
Awesome looking product. I just wish my equipment (1995 GT RTS-3) and my old Mavic Cross Ride wheels could go tubeless. Great video though. I too have a cat named jack, and he is about the same size as yours. Thanks for posting.
getto tubless. works great
Hi both
After seeing this video & ripping a hole in the side wall of my back tyre last weekend on the first single track of a 30k ride & having to put a bit of old iner tube inside the tyre over the hole & a tube in & finished off the ride with it bubbling out of the hole I have decided to buy a vitoria air liner to go in the new tyre I have to get.
Hope it works?
are you able to purchase these thru the link you sent as I am assuming the link the only way to take advantage of the discount? Love the video and excited to try these!
Yes! They are currently out of stock but should have more soon!
Wondering if after all this time -- how you feel about these liners? Also, if you're still using them, do still carry spare tubes and pump when going on trail rides?
One year on and I’ve still got them in the hardtail rear tyres. I’ve toyed with the idea of using an insert that doesn’t take up as much air volume as you do loose a fair bit of feel and flex I the tyre due to air volume loss but I had a bad puncture that the tubeless sealant couldn’t seal properly and had to ‘run flat’ on the liner to finish the race. It was a slower finish time but at least it wasn’t a DNF.
Be neat to redesign thia product. Give it a round outer surface leaving a notch for a Kevlar inner tube that you inflate that pushes the product outward for a much better system. The foam product will absorb the hits bumps and rocks and thorns or sharp rocks with the tire never going flat. Then design car tires the same way. 😊
Thanks for this video and the information but do you know if the tire sealant will get to the sides of the tire? We have a lot of torns on our trails and I'm not sure if the small holes on the side can be sealed.....
Sunny regards, Barry.
Yup, the sealant still does it's job no problem!
I just bought some Huck Norris, but want to try these next.
Huck is pretty good, especially given the price, but the protection isn't nearly as good as the Air-Liner in our experience!
SYD and MACKY I am still a pretty tame rider, but I need something with all the Austin Rock/Chunk around here.
Great vid....very informative
Awesome video i have just bought some what tire pressures you recommend?
My tires are 2.6, which the inserts are not available yet for my size of tires. I do like the idea that they have different size inserts for different diameter tires. For $93.00 do you get 2 inserts? Do valve stems come with package also? And do you need a special valve stems to work with the inserts? Keep up with the work, thanks.
They're sold individually and do not need any special valve stem to work (which is awesome).
Where's the discount code? I got one for my rear and it's worked great. Just flatted my front and decided front needs it too. I'd suggest cutting the liner about 1/2" shorter than the rim and use the zip ties to hold it a bit tighter to the rim - makes it easier to install
Unfortunately the code expired last year...
good thing you had the apron, wouldn't want to mess up your Sunday best clothes.
I noticed the video doesn't show that last part of getting the bead on the rim. That part is what is hard about Cush Core. How difficult is it with Air-Liners?
Pretty easy. We just lift the air-liner up a bit and drop the bead in. I watched a friend set up Cush core and that was WAY harder!
SYD and MACKY Cool. I’ll give it a go. Thanks!
Jack totally needs a bike!
Putting the rim down in the gravel and then dropping the tire in the gravel at the start of the video, would that pick up any objects that could poke holes in the tubeless tape? Plus a zip tie to hold it together? Don't you worry that the zip tie will pull out of the foam or the tire will compress to the area of the head of the zip tie possibly ripping the tube? Or any type of tire burp on the area of the zip tie could rip your rip tape?
We've run Air-liners for multiple years so far and never had any rim tape issues with them...
I live in the city and the flats are never fun so this is 🤩
I love Jack!
I may be a doof, but where is this discount code/link? I'm still on the disabled list for a bit longer but I'm trying to get my hubby set up with all the needs for a kick @$$ tubeless setup for his bday.
Sorry, forgot to add it! Check pinned comment now!
Hi Guys, great video. I need some advice tho, i am keen to try out this system as i am always getting pitch flats!! I run 2.8” tyres. The size large is 2.5-2.7 and the XL is 2.7-4.0. Will the XL be too big for the smaller tyre?? Cheers
Good question. We haven't tried the bigger ones, but I'd recommend going for the XL. It might be a bit of a tight fit to get it on, but it'll give you better protection that way!
I have these and at lower pressure
Pull the tire, re-measure the Airliner (they stretch a bit over time) and cut off the excess. Then just punch a new hole, zip tie it together and reinstall. Valve stems are pretty easy to clean... Then your wheel will be good as new!
I installed a cushcore somewhat recently and it was an extremely hard install. Almost makes me question whether or not I want to keep using it in the future.
Yeah, we've heard that from other people as well. Even heard some horror stories about breaking carbon rims trying to get it on!
What do you think of the air liners? Do they help with damping as well as the cushcores?
Haven't tried Cush core, but given that they're at least as large, should have a similar effect!
I'm curious to know what size of air liner you are using in this video for your 2.3 tire? On the Vittoria website, it shows that there are a couple of sizes not available yet.
We're running the mediums (2.3-2.5). They've been going in and out of stock as more arrive and people snap them up!
SYD and MACKY that's what I thought. I'm running 2.5 and 2.3 inch tires and I ordered the small for my carbon Ibis wheels because that's all that was available. I hope that size will be good and does the job.
So, how's the longevity of the air liner? Unfortunately you don't show any used and ridden insert, only brand new ones. How well did they handle the 3 months of riding? Did it need to be replaced after the flat tire and continuing riding with it?
For $90 per single piece you should expect this thing to last for quite some time.
It's easy to say that it's a great product if you don't need to pay for it, but us normal folks have to consider price to perfomance ratio, too.
That being said, I'm running Procore since it was released (2015), and had my fair share of problems with it in the beginning, which fortunately has settled down now over the last years. But even *if* the Procore inner tube would need to be replaced, it would still be cheaper than buying a new air liner (18€). The main thing that I like about those inserts is the better damping from the foam. With Procore you get a very digital feel of soft outer tire and hard inner tube, thus I'd prefer the foam insert. If they would have a similar life expectancy.
We've ridden a couple different ones on flats and are still running them without any issues. The claimed life expectancy is 1000 riding hours or 1 hour of riding on a flat. We haven't hit either of those milestones yet, but haven't had any issues so far with LOTS of miles and a number of flats!
singletrackworld.com/2018/11/review-vittoria-air-liner-tubeless-tyre-inserts-maximum-fit-and-forget-protection/
These guys have put a season of riding with it. Not even 1 nic. Zero damage whatsoever so their claim of 2000 hours could be legit
That's nice but I prefer my way I haven't had a flat in 25 years but good video for those that do get flats 😁
You aren't gonna share your way???
What kind of psi are you guys running (typically) with, and without the liners? Looks like a great option!
We haven't changed the pressure we run, we just go through rocky, gnarly stuff more aggressively and worry less! We probably could go down, but are fairly happy with the pressures were running...
I run 24 front, 29 rear and weigh 165-170. Syd runs 19 front, 25 rear and weighs 140-145.
I anticipate airless tires in the future but it’ll probably reach the hundred dollar range.
Maxxis 2.8 are 100 by themselves lol
@5:25 Ummm you're not worried about getting tire sealant on your discs?
Where do you put the zip tie connection in regards to the rim please
Tyre side or rim side ?
We generally do it tire side because then you don't risk it puncturing the rim tape
Do they stay seated on the rim when theirs no air in the tyres?
Why are you on gravel installing tires?
I guess I should have asked this before I made the order... lol but do these come in a PAIR or SINGLES? :/
I didnt see anything on their website saying these are sold individually but I also dont see them making a notice that they are sold in a pair either. Cushcore makes note that they are sold in pairs or give an option for single use.
I think it's individual. But we'll tell them to clarify on the website.
When will they make tubes which just have an outer section made from foam and an inner air chamber? Then everyone can go back to using tubes...
The problem there is that you wouldn't be able to adjust the feel of your tire (the air pressure) because the outer part would be foam. And if you swapped it around and the outer part was air, then you're back to the issues of puncturing tubes too easily...I think tubeless is here to stay!
The cat is the star! =)
That cat looks well fed
Morsa as a rear, what do you use as a front tire? Keep up the good work, great videos and great marriage.
We generally run the Martello in the front. And frequently on the rear too, depending on the terrain!
SYD and MACKY ; ok thanks. I race XC and run Vittoria Mezcals f/r. I’m headed to Colorado and Moab this October and I’m looking for a more aggressive and tougher tire setup, but ones that still roll fast. I really like Vittoria brand, so maybe Martello/Morsa. Have you guys tried the Goma?
The Goma is great in Moab on slickrock but doesn't have as aggressive of cornering knobs for other, looser terrain. Yeah, Morsa, Martello is a great combo.
Thank for this, I was looking at these recently. Do you put them in the front and rear or just rear?
We've been doing front and rear, but might do just rear in the future. Depends how much you like to smash the front wheel through stuff!
I don't get front flats often....but just moving to a HT so would like something to help with the lack of suspension in the rear...and my hack riding style...haha. Never tried a product like this yet...looking forward to it.
Havent finished the full video yet, still watching.. but curious... I am more interested in using this type of system (cushcore) because I want more sidewall strength in the turns preventing the tire from rolling. This option seems like it would provide more strength in the turns??
Yeah you can definitely run lower pressures and not worry as much about rolling the tire.
Awesome! Im excited to try these out. Havent wanted to make the larger investment into cushcore and this looks like it extends higher into the sidewalls than cushcore also. Thanks for sharing this and creating a discount code for us. Already have a set ordered.
What about the tape at the seam of the foam ring....comes with it.
I’m curious to try this. I’ve been running cushcore and it’s awesome, but this uses more volume. Are you guys running same pressures or lower with the insert?
Same pressures at the moment, but worrying less about flatting.
I dropped a little bit of pressure, 2-3psi and I don't seem to flat at all anymore. Wondering if the more compliant tires help with getting less punctures as well.
Awesome review and I got to see a cat, good times.
Do these inserts cause any issues with sealant not working or not sealing a puncture properly?
Haven't really tested it since so far it has kept is from flatting (knock on wood). But I see no reason that it would cause any issues.
How are these for winter riding (4" fat bike tire) when you need 6-8 psi? It seems these would only be a summer item, but wonder if anyone knows for sure.
What's you guy's recommedation for a great grippy overall tire for us non-enduro-competing riders? (dual, all-mountain).
We love the Martello for pretty much everything, but if you're looking for something a bit less aggressive, the Barzo is good too!
Chuck Norris fell off his bike once, and the road got Chuck rash.
Terrible
Cush core! Best thing ever
Similar idea. Haven't tried it personally, but based on what we've heard from people who have used it, it's much harder to install (and more expensive) and has a similar level of protection.
Hi guys! Whats the weight for one wheel?
What air pressure front-rear normally run?
Can't remember the weight, but I think it says on the website. We run our usual pressures (Macky 24/29, Syd 19/25) just worry less about flats and denting rims!
hey syd and macky
last time i went biking i dit some acrobatics on the trail and becouse of my spd pedals i sent my bike flying
and i think you will be gessing he has 2 rims with a irreparable flat spot
so my question is are there any products that protect my rims against flat spots
The airliner will definitely help. It won't stop everything, but it's much better than nothing!
You held up the wheel, I see a valve sticking out but where's the inner tube?
No inner tube, it's tubeless!
for the air liner do you run less air than your normal or do you use the same as you normally would?
You can run less, but we run the same because we were happy with our pressures. But we'll certainly be dropping it for wet races!
Looks and sound Good will have to check it out there site Syd &Macky ;0) the cat look like he was enjoy him self ;0)
You didn't mention how it changed what PSI you put in your tires. How much did it drop?
We've actually kept it the same, but been able to ride through rough stuff more aggressively.
they are supposed to help lessen the damage to rims i thought? i wonder what the rim would have done without it?
Would have likely gone straight past taco to full burrito. ;P
Yeah, without it we're guessing the rim would have been totally toasted. As is, we were able salvage it!
Jack is very good.
The question is, Now knowing that you have had one flat with the insert installed, what is the number of flats experiences without the Air-Liner installed over the same time duration and distance traveled?
Yeah, last year this time we'd had quite a few more, so we're stoked!
Richard Kaz b
Hi both
I am after a bit of advice
I am 100kg with all my kit on & have been putting 28 to 30psi in the back tyre. With the air liner in what would you say would be a good psi ? Can I go down to 25 ish with out worries?
Thanks for your help
Personally, we've been running the same psi we normally do, but theoretically, you should be able to drop it some. We'd recommend starting at the same pressure and then dropping it one psi at a time each ride until you find what you like!
Thank you for your help
