  • Paul Scholes is one of the most naturally gifted and celebrated English players in recent football history and is therefore treated as such.
There is, however, a group of people who feel that he may have been a tad overrated. In today's video, we'll be finding out if that is the case. So how good was he really?

Technically he did win silverware for england in the 1997 Tournoi de France and after he retired from international football England got worse. 2008 two english teams in the CL final and we didnt even make it to the euros of that year. So not only did he win more silverware than Gerrard and Lampard at club level, hes the only one of the three to win something at international level. Great video tho

You can't really measure Scholes's talent with statistics. It's about how he controlled the ball, changed the course of attacks, defended the ball from his opponents, found best-positioned teammates, and made sure everything was working. His quality is beyond numbers.

@@safe3220 far better? perhaps not. But certainly better. Carrick was one of those strange cases where he was undervalued during his playing days, but overrated after retirement. He was a good solid player that was not appreciated like he should have been, but no more than that. Montolivo is in that same category. The difference between them is that Montolivo was very dynamic, he had everything that Carrick had, but he had a bit more going forwards. And that was perhaps his downfall. If he had stayed back and played safe like Carrick, dictating play from deep, he would have left a better legacy for himself, but he was asked to push up and dictate attacks from further forward, because he could, but he sometimes failed to do so. It's something that would never be asked of Carrick, because he didn't have the ability to do so. It's why Pirlo says that Montolivo was a better footballer than Carrick. He was. But he wasn't used by his coaches in the same way.

This may get buried, but I think if Scholes had focused on the deep CM role his entire life, he would be regarded as the best in that position of all time. His post 30 play was truly incredible, but if he had focused on that from a younger age, he could have hit that point far younger and just imagine how terrifying that would be. They got peak Hargreaves, Veron, Schweinstager, Pogba, VdB and many more to try and fail miserably. Even a 39 year old Scholes would start for most teams in the PL, certainly United and even Liverpool and Chelsea right now. City perhaps not, that’s just about the only PL team I feel he might not be a sure starter for. He’s better than all the players they have in the midfield, but the level of competition is too high for him to start week in week out.

There's a story about Scholes and Ronaldo that used to circulate United fan groups. It's likely not true but here it is:
When Ronaldo came to United, being his high-flair and super confident self, he took up all the attention on/off the pitch and would boast to his team about how good he was. Then one day during a training session Scholes came up to him and said "You see that tree over there?", as he pointed to a tree that was over half a pitch away, "I can hit that tree dead on from here first try" and then he did exactly that on his first try. Ronaldo picked up the gauntlet and tried several times without hitting the tree. Which humbled Ronaldo and helped him on his way to become a legend.
True or not, I think it perfectly encapsulates Scholes as a character and player. A player out of the spotlight relative to his teammates, but a confident and composed master of the game.

People say that Scholes couldn't tackle. That's absolutely not true. Scholes could tackle just fine. His so-called bad tackles were absolutely deliberate. He got away with a lot more than he should have because the media cultivated a reputation of him being a bad tackler so that whenever he took a player out, the ref would look at him and be like "Oh, it's Scholes, he can't tackle so I'll let him off with a warning" haha.

Best long passing foot in Premier League history, best ever in the PL to control the tempo of the game and packed a punch. It should not have been Gerrard´s either, but it was. Simple.

    Definitely underrated.
It says everything about how underrated he was by the comments you read from the greats of the game that get all the plaudits, Pirlo, Zidane, Iniesta, Henry.
Mainly down to his own humble, salt of the earth persona, when compared to the football celebrities he was surrounded by, Beckham, Giggs etc. He was often overlooked by the media, but he also shied away from the limelight, so there's that too.
He was a big fish in a big pond during Utd's most successful years as well, whereas Gerrard was the main big fish for LFC and similar with Lamp's at Chelsea.
He did the right thing with England, retiring early to prolong his club career. He failed with England as much as every other England player did during that time.
