From a pure footballing perspective I don't think there's any question that Le Tiss is one of the 7 or 8 most gifted players England has ever produced.
Yup.. he was robbed of playing more integral part for England .. just because his club not belong to big four!!
I'd say from the perspective of goal craft I never saw a more gifted English player.
I’d say somewhere around 6-9
He’s probably the best. Name me others? Perhaps Shearer, Rooney...maybe MAYBE Harry Kane....but who else? Matt scored 30 goals in a season as a mid-fielder for a relegation fodder team.

I was at the game against Wimbledon where he scored the free kick around the 87th minute. One of the worst games I have seen. 0-0 at 87 minutes. Free-kick played to him, he flicks it up to himself and hits the volley into the top corner. A genius of a player. Had he chosen to play for France he would have been a word-cup winner in 98.
I was at that game, it was dire. Matty does his thing and everybody leaves with huge grins saying "did you see THAT?"
I remember there was a warm up game against Russia for the fringe players to make an impact.. Le Tissier scored a hat trick, left foot, right foot and head. He also had an assist in 2 if the other 3 goals. Hoddle still didn't pick him. Moron. I'm not a saints fan but I love football and MLT was hands down the player that supporters from all clubs loved to watch. Genius.

Met him man many times, he is the most humble footballer I've ever met. No ego, no diva attitude. Absolute legend in Southampton and always will be. Was my hero growing up and so glad saints were lucky to have someone who cared so much about the club.

I think he saw what was coming in the future... He knew that if he were to stay then he would leave a legacy at the club, sometimes it's not just about winning trophies, It's about playing the beautiful game you love and playing with your heart
Of course, but to recognise that in the moment when you have an opportunity to further your career and earn probably 5x the money, it takes some real foresight, and some proper humanity to make that decision.
Bs, a top player but no ambition unfortunately, I only seen shearer do the same as he went to Newcastle and win nothing whereas united wanted him but he chose Newcastle knowing he aint winning against united. Loyal to their hometown clubs, I pay respect to that 💯

I was around 18 when he was at his peak. it didn't matter what club you supported or what he was or wasn't winning. Every time he went out on the pitch and blew past tackles, or scored outrageous skill goals it has an affect on everyone. No one would debate his merits, we'd all hit the parks and try to practice some skill, and a lot of his humility rubbed off too. Here's someone who got to be professional at what he loved, and to give to the community around it. It's a massive achievement and something to be admired. Who wants to live in a world where there's only The Ultimate Competitive Winners and the Plebs?
I always remember every football fan loved watching Le Tiss play he transcended rivalry. You still hated it if he scored against you but it was a bitter sweet taste because 9/10 times it was a special moment from a special talent.

Le Tiss is the reason I got into football, I’m from Southampton. We used to say, it was worth the admission fee to just see him warm up. The first game I went to, a cup game, he scored a world class goal. I honestly think that in 1994-95 there wasn’t a more exciting attacking player in world football.
Some of the goals featured in this video are absolutely sublime. I can't believe English managers didn't think having that on the field might be useful; might win a game.

@@stevencooke6451 To many it's one of the greatest footballing crimes in England. The england managers at the time had a simplistic view of the game and how it should be played. They believed that a team can win a tournament with limited grafters. It was a fallacy that they held for a long time and got them nowhere and made England looked very mediocre compared to the elite of Europe and the rest of the world.
Still applies to Southgate, which is why he wont start Grealish, Foden or Sancho.
I remember turning up early in the Milton Road end and watch Matty 'warm up'. This would usually involve a number of long range spectacular finishes. It was such a treat. When he retired, I've not enjoyed the game nearly as much. We were all lucky to have him.
Thank you for this video. I've been a Saints season ticket for most of my life, and was lucky enough to see 'Le God' progress throughout his career. I've never seen a player like him ever - a true artist. True artists aren't interested in anything, except for their art. I believe that he didn't move to a bigger club in part due to his free role at Southampton, and his fear that the bigger clubs would try to dumb down his talent by getting him to focus on his fitness/stamina and move him into that British obsession at that time - a utility player. I believe that at his peak he topped the stats chart for goals AND assists. A brilliant scorer of goals, a great bloke - yet a humble and loyal club man. Something that will probably not see again. An artist vs. a seeker of fame and fortune. He scored his last goal for the club, in his last appearance, in the final game of the season, at the last match at 'The Dell', to beat Arsenal 3-2. Nuff said...
I don’t know so much about football really - so thanks for this analysis which seems to me spot on to what I saw… I think he was the greatest of artists by sheer gift of genius who remained humble and selfless enough in an old fashioned English spirit to be a true heroic figure to a club he loved. It was his arena - and he knew he was great… What an amazing man. Unforgettable magic… A one and only. Sad in some ways… the more heroic because of it. God bless him.

Witnessed the goal he scored at Blackburn in the 3-2 loss, there was a stunned silence and then the whole ground gave him a standing ovation.
I saw him play away at Oldham, in my memory he touched the ball 3 times and scored three times. says it all, also he was my Dad's favourite player at the time (even though my Dad was a Newcastle fan).
As a lifetime LFC supporter, I think you will find he was a lot of fans ( including me ) favourite player. So cool, so skillful ,on pitches nothing like todays snooker table type grounds. against defenders willing to kill you "fairly "! not big headed, totally grounded, Natural talent can,t be taught.
Speaking as a Newcastle fan Tiss was an epic player. He had a touch rarely seen in football.
Being a saints fan and obviously biased, he was the greatest saints player ive ever seen. Genius = le god.
Players like Le Tissier are what is missing from English football today. He was an exceptional talent and a joy to watch.
Sad to say players like LeTiss don't make it through these days. I can't think of anyone else like him.
From what I remember, players like Le Tissier were also missing from English football in the 1980's, 2000's and 2010's. In the 90's we had Gazza and Cantona do some brief impersonations of Le Tissier, but in English football Le Tissier is the only player I can remember consistently displaying such skill for such a long period of time during my lifetime.
Kids are all on Computers these days, I think the pool to draw from has declined a lot and few committed ones go through academy’s. Players like Le Tiz come from years of fun playing with mates in a park where you got the freedom to be creative just not as many of those kids today.
Speaking as a lifelong Saints fan, and having met Matt on several occasions, I would say he's happy with how things went for him. At his peak, England were in transition, and he didn't really fit into the post-Euro 96 setup. To play him, you have to drop Lampard or Gerrard, or sit him behind Shearer and Sheringham. It never really worked. His playing style made him Le God to us. He should have taken the Blackburn offer, but I think he might have worried about having to prove it in a much harder-working, title-chasing team. Grealish occasionally reminds me of him.
Realistically, you would have had to have played a 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 diamond. It could have been done, although it would mean moving David Beckham into a more central position.

Le Tissier last player for England when he was about 28. He was 32 when Gerrard earned his first England cap, 33 when Lampard earned his 2nd one and Le Tissier pretty much retired when he was 34. Although Gerrard and Lampard were both great players, they had very little to do with Le Tissier not being chosen more for England.

Spurs fan, i remember him as a teenager, 52 penalties and 1 miss i believe! Greatest penalty taker of all time on record, i remember him skipping past entire teams every weekend, hes freekick ability was world class and he was as reliable as they come, one of the greatest players to play in the premiership ever and ive not even mentioned hes loyalty!
I've heard a story about Le Tissier. This was during pre-season and the team was running. And behind all of them Le Tissier was telling every coach where they could put something up nasty
The coaches thought, is he good enough. So they gave him a ball. It didn't matter if the ball was going out right or left, or through the middle, Le Tissier still got it.

This man is everything to us Saints fans, we would pay money just to watch his magic every week. I only wish more people could have appreciated what a special talent he was. And there will never be a player as loyal as him again, absolute legend.

He had a spell from late '93 until 96 were he was near enough unplayable. I think he preferred being the big fish in a smaller pond rather than move on to a top club. He had the ability to have achieved anything he wanted though but he has to be respected for remaining loyal to the club than nurtured him. (Everton fan)
I was so annoyed with Hoddle, there was a 'B' side international (when they used to play such things) played against a Russian B team friendly and Le Tissier scored a hat trick and Paul Merson scored one. Guess who got the call up? (Hint, not the subject of the video). Also, Teddy Sheringham got loads of call ups and he wasn't exactly well know for tackling and tracking back.
I remember this, I couldn't believe it at the time and even to this day. Hoddle sets up B-international games to assess a wider pool of players, he goes and scores a Hat-Trick and does not get picked, what else could he have done! Total farce of a fixture

I remember it well. Chris Sutton was not considered for the England squad as he refused to play in the “meaningless” England B game. After Matt’s hat trick, it made me think perhaps Sutton was right.
I saw him play live only once, at Gillingham in the league cup. He had one of his lazy games and walked up and down on the wing like a spare part. Still, he's my favourite player of all time!

I get that. The England managers often played players out of position. What is the point? Tiss could have shone for England, but England managers are always scared to let talent do its thing without interference. The late Bobby Robson was a possible exception.
@@Grandmastergav86 I agree, they are both overrated. The entire team is, and that's partly why I hate watching the national team play these days. I just think with a player like Grealish the manager should put him in a midfield attacking role and let him go out and do whatever he wants. And of course, he's not even close to Le Tissier's level of talent.

He was a magical player, and I don't think it would have worked for him at another club, Matt was 'Mr. Southampton', he was so good that he only trained once a week (certainly when Alan Ball was the manager) he was able to stay on Guernsey during the week and boat over for match days, and due to his amazing performances, goal and assist ratios it worked great for him and the club. He was a beautiful player that made the most out of his epic skill on the ball and his ability to hit a shot so cleanly, never blessed with pace, but it didn't matter, on his day he would run the whole game. I'm so happy that I'm old enough at 41 to have seen Matt in his prime years, the 2 goals he scored against Newcastle in 1993 are legendary and that is only one game! there are so many amazing goals that he scored. I'm not a Southampton fan, but I'm a big Le Tiss fan.
As a long time saints fan I can tell you he is still loved greatly by all saints fans. There are very few players in top league football that can claim the adoration he receives from the fans of his club like Le Tiss does.
Gained way more respect for him as a human recently. One of the few ex or current players to have any balls.

Forgotten fact about Le Tis is that Between the seasons of 1986 - 2002 he made 443 appearances for the Saints, scoring 161 goals. And won MOTD goal of the month for a consecutive 216 months ( even winning during the cricket season he was that good)
I still believe he is one of the best players England has produced ever.

He made a city love him for his loyalty, his down to earth attitude to life and of course, his sublime skill. I was blessed to have been able to watch him for much of the time he blessed the hallowed turf.

Could he have gone to a top team of course and would have done in today’s game and would have been a number 10 for England most likely, but that was a different era. He was top class, Every week on MOTD you'd vote for your favorite goal and he as always there at least once a month with a worldie from outside the box. Shocking a player of that caliber he didn't get many international call ups.

Le Tissier was defnitely one of the reasons why I loved staying up at night as a teenager in the 90s to watch MOTD weekly, he scored so many incredible goals and with such consistency. I remember thinking in retrospect that he really should've been selected to play in the England squad for World Cup 98 but Hoddle seemed to completely ignore his obvious talent. Mind you, Hoddle was a strange guy in many ways...

What a great player he was. I love that he found a place where he was content and wasn't tempted away by the lure of greater riches and fame. It says a lot about the man. I respect him for that choice.

I have just found this channel while browsing and so pleased I have. Excellent stuff indeed, succinct and very interesting. As for LeTissier, a move to a bigger club would have been either a total disaster or a triumph of epic proportions depending on whether the manager was savvy enough to let him play his own way or not....sadly will will never know.
I went uni in Southampton and used to live on Archers Road.
It was virtually impossible to get tickets for the Dell but I managed it once for a League cup game against Lincoln City.
Saints we’re awful and Lincoln should have been out of sight but as it was saints brought on Le God 2-0 down with 10 minutes left. Two touches of the ball later and it was 2-2.
Make no mistake Le Tissier was that good. Easily the best player I’ve ever seen live and I’ve never seen anyone so naturally at ease with the ball at his feet. His awareness, balance and touch with either foot first class. A genuine privilege to see him play.
He was also a gentleman off the pitch. Bumped into him with another saints player in the Bedford place bookies one Saturday afternoon after a game was called off late doors. He was happily chatting to fans and giving autographs.

I'm a Newcastle fan and I've always respected Le Tiss a lot when he played. Always wondered as a kid back then that why he didn't go to Spurs if he liked the team. After some time I realised that Matt played for his team and not for the money. Absolutely talented, great forward with genius attacking mind. Phenomenal skill to strike from far and clinical finisher from near too. Amazing player with absolutely great attitude. Too bad England didn't give him more games than just 8.
I also always wanted him to join Magpies to rejoin with Shearer but it was just a wish that never happened. Mad respect for Matt's loyalty to So'ton. And that loyalty is something very unique.

I understand him. If he moved to a other club maybe he wouldn't have played at that level or at all. We see it nowadays and especially last decades time and time again. It's not all up to skill and abilities alone, he definitely wouldn't have had from the start as much of a well suited role anywhere else.
If you can walk past players and create 60% of the teams goals you can make it anywhere.
He still plays agains the same players in sunderland or Man Utd usually performance don't drop when you are surrounded better players. Just like Cantona he wasn't liked by managers but he's input in the game was huge.

I really wish he had gone on to a bigger club. He's still regarded as a legend in Southampton but he could have been a worldwide legend if he had gone on to a bigger team. Either way, great video.
Always remember watching Le Tissier with my grandad, he loved him. definitely someone I used to try and emulate as a kid. great touch and feet.
Given Glenn Hoddle’s views on other things, I think it only goes in Le Tissier’s favour that he kept leaving him out of the squad.
Hoddle was just one in a long line of mediocre non-entities who have managed England over the years. That the FA chose Greenwood over Clough says it all.

Proper great documentary
I watched him play the Riverside when i was a kid, he spent most of the time looking at the floor and wandering around. That's when i understood why he didn't play for England very often.
Thank you for making this video. I always thought I was the only one who found Matt Le Tissier to be an effortless creative genius. Most others found him to be just a lazy 'meh' player. Glad there are many more like me here. Even if you don't like a player like Le Tissier, you cannot help but respect a person who loves football and freedom enough to stay at the same club at the cost of his own career!

Sublime talent that was always a joy to watch, who played the game for love and not money.
I am not a Southampton fan and have no affiliation with the club but Le Tissier was one of my favourite players growing up. Brought joy to all those who watched him, even though he was slow, had a big nose and, by all accounts, was a bit lazy. If anyone not familiar with him thinks that it looks like he scored goals like the ones in the video all the time, then that's because he did. It's also not an exaggeration to say he single-handedly kept Southampton in the Premier League in the mid 1990s.
Both his goals v Newcastle in 1993/94 are in that vid. Many players would dine out on scoring one goal like that in their whole career. He scored two Goal of The Season contenders in one match. He did win it the following season with that goal v Blackburn at Ewood Park, which is still one of my favourite ever goals. I'm not too keen on the hattrick he got v West Ham though, even though that kept Southampton up!
I loved him and still watch his goal compilations now. I'm not alone either, mates of mine who have no connection with Southampton love him as well. Some of the things he did with the ball were outrageous and to score with a volley from outside the box on his final appearance in a victory against Arsenal was fitting.
Thanks for your interesting film. Matt Le Tissier was a stunning talent. That he played so few games for England says more about the low ability and lack of imagination of England managers who didn't understand how to incorporate a player with Le Tissier's extraordinary ball skills and vision. I could imagine him playing for Brazil and Argentina, national teams that recognise the kind of skills that Le Tissier had.
Le Tissier was a pure football genius. He was never picked much for England I suspect "because his own teammates couldn't tell what he'd do next" (as was supposedly said about Paul Gascoigne).
If u want a team full of 90 + minute runners, and players who will just play whatever system u think up, then u leave Matt Le Tiissier behind. And Johan Cruyff, Ricardo Villa, Diego Maradona, Ruud Hullit, etc, etc. Obviously the Dutch, Argentinians (& other countries) did not leave them behind. They trusted their Stars, played them in the right positions and...WON Tournaments doing it !!
Of course a team needs 90+ minute runners & workers too also.
I remember some British interviewer trying to criticize Ruud Hullit over his 'workrate'. Ruud's reply went along the lines of :
How many minutes does it take to score a goal ? 1 minute ? 2 or 3 minutes ? You have to be there, ready for those 2 or minutes. And u have to be able to do it then. Not run around for 90 minutes.
I know some other players will hate that, but that's what STARS can do.

I am a Villan since the early 80s.
But, everytime Match Of The Day comes on the telly, i look forward to Southampton's matches, solely to watch this man on the pitch, and most of the time, I was never dissapointed.
And if Aston Villa played Southampton, I always hoped Matt will score magical goals, but of cause, at the end of the day, I wanted Villa to score one more than Southampton.
The guy was beyond genius.
I remember Ruud Gullit said in an interview, "If you are a striker, or attacking midfield, your job is score goals, and create scoring opportunities, not running around trying to tackle the opponents. DO YOU SEE DEFENDERS RUNNING FORWARD ALL THE TIME TRYING TO SCORE GOALS? So, as a striker or attacking midfield, why should you be running back to defend? It is not your job to do so. Because when you are tired, you will lack oxigen in the brain to think and score goals, goals win matches. Score one extra goal than the opponents, you will win matches". SIMPLE
