What size tires are you running? I tried this out with the long hook and there still wasn't enough clearance for the hook to properly fit over a 29er carbon wheel w/ 2.4 tires, unfortunately.
Thats super interesting, I am using it with a stans carbon wheel and 2.6 tires and it is working well. Are the rims you are using very tall? There definitely is a technique of entering the hook from the side and then turning your bike. Let m me know if i can help in any way

Ahh man i am not totally sure but it saves at least a foot of protrusion from the wall

Are there any downsides to storing a mountain bike vertically like that? Could it be bad for the brakes or the fork at all? Maybe a dumb question.
No
If you have disc brakes, then you may have small air bubbles forming in the line. This is not bad, but if you use the bike then you have to operate the brake levers in such a case 2-5x to eliminate this "problem".
But this assembly also has advantages, because the damper elements (especially the front suspension fork) is better supplied with oil (does not dry out).

Will this void fork warranty?
No it won’t void it and it even helps lubricate the bushings a little more than with the bike flat
its been 3yrs too late for my queries, does this does not affect the hydraulic oil on the brakes, forks and dropper post?
Nope, they should be fine. If it's a MTB then you'll need the long hooks because the normal hooks are tiny
