- Single stroke Roll is just RLRL right?!?
The single stroke roll is the most common drum rudiment used on the drum set. It's often played in beats, fills, and drum solos. It doesn't matter if you are new to the drums, or if you have been playing for years, the single stroke roll is absolutely essential.

I’ve been playing for 40 years and this is the best basic lesson I’ve ever seen
Thanks so much. I am happy you enjoyed it.
Me too ... This is proper teaching
20 yrs - same comment. Best basic lesson EVER. BTW -- which VF Stick is that?
Totally agree!!!!!! Awesome lesson
Are you professional or not
Your the first ever drummer who has shown me what your actually doing with your fingers, I always though it was all in the wrist, many many thanks for that.
My brain literally went 💡
@@D0peSince85 haha yesssss that's awesome! I am so happy it was helpful. When i learned this technique the same thing happened for me. A light bulb went on and I was like OHHHH I GET IT. Cheers. God Bless
Ray, you are very welcome. I am happy it was helpful. the transition from wrist to fingers is the tricky part. I plan to make a 2nd video going deeper into this technique soon. Cheers. God Bless.
Sounds like you need to learn from some death metal drummers!
How Long will it take
Been playing over 45 years from High School, Drum Corps and live studio session, concerts and Church drummer, this is the best teaching in under 10 minutes I've ever seen. Blessings to you!
That is a huge compliment!!! Thanks so much!!!
@@camiloops.official Hello, You're welcome; Kenneth Daniels Sr
I swear the drum teachers i had when I was a teen never taught me this and for decades i never knew how to get past the fast wrist action to letting my fingers take over. Thank you!
Hey!!! I'm happy this helped and I totally understand not being taught this technique. I was lucky to study with Myles Overton III from the Army Band. He taught me this technique and it was reinforced in drumline.
My first teacher trying to teach single stroke rolls would say, and would just keep repeating it "Faster. Faster. Faster."
I didn't take another lesson with him. Thank you for creating this lesson. It is the best one I have seen on this topic.
You’re a born teacher - this is terrific - thank you!😃🕊
Thank you! 😊. I appreciate the compliment!
@@camiloops.official It’s easy to pay a compliment when you really mean it! You’re truly gifted. And your enthusiasm is infectious.🕊
This video is helping thousands of drummers in the world!
As a 70 year old kettle drummer in a marching band in Australia, I like your hand exercises, I will be trying these out for sure to limber up my hands and fingers.
Thank you very much.
You are bright gem amongst the sand grains.
After a half dozen video instructions by men it took a woman’s perspective and common sense to explain it. Thank you!
The best lesson on finger technique. This is what I needed and was searching for all these years. Thank youuuu
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome!!!
been drumming 47 years and never saw this technique before...THANK YOU!
@@rogerjones6033 You are very welcome. This is not a very common technique, but I learned it while I was in Marching Band in High School and it was reinforced by my drum instructor Myles Overton III from the US Army military band.
I have been seeing other more famous instructors play that way, and you are the first to show the best way for someone to train your muscle memory. TYTY and bless you in all your future drum endeavors.
Sister I’ve been playing over 40 years and have never seen these finger techniques.. Awesome video God bless and keep the vids coming
This is the best finger grip explanation I've ever seen! 2 minutes and I already feel more in control of the sticks! Can't wait to give it a week. Your drumming feels and sounds so great, and you are beautiful in every way thanks!
awww thanks so much for the kind words and I am so happy this was useful in helping you develop your technique. #gratitudeshake
Very good lesson. No frills just honest, basic work. Every young drummer should see this, and old ones like me too!
Playing for 50 years, broke my left wrist last February slipping on ice. Though healed, I am 8 months later still reworking the fingers all over again. This is a great tutorial by a very thoughtful drummer and I am glad she put this up. I need all the help I can get.
Man, I wish someone had shown me this a long time ago. Thank you lovely woman. This is a great tip.
I feel so lucky to have come across this lesson for FREE! Thank you, Akhamie. You covered everything I was looking for and explained it so clearly. Lots of practice ahead of me. Subscribed! Thanks again
I've been looking for a drummer who explains how to execute this technique for a long time. You managed to teach me what I've been trying to study, and I couldn't quite get it right because I didn't understand how to execute the movements. Congratulations on your high technical ability and for being able to clarify and teach in such a simple, direct, and cool way. God bless you!!!
Whoa, thank you! As soon as I started I could feel that THIS is the muscle movement that is so smooth on my dominant hand and chunkier with my weak hand.
Gonna employ this practice immediately. EXCITED!
This is awesome! I have been trying to find a tutorial for this for YEARS! You're the best. I love that you repeated the exercise at different speeds and with different view/angles so I could actually see your grip. I have had multiple teachers who could play a fast single stroke like this, but couldn't describe the technique. Now I'm getting it. So excited! THANK YOU!
That was a great finger technique lesson. Your wrists remain motionless while your fingers do all the work. The control you have achieved is remarkable. Thank you very much for the demonstration.
This is fantastic, not only did you teach it, you gave me the drill to get good at it. Much appreciated
Probably the most awesome and informative, rudimentary drum/percussion video I have ever seen. You have opened up my eyes to what actually goes on, and the practice techniques required.
This is the motion. Do this over and over again. Got it!
haha yup. Lots of repetition. Let me know if you have any questions.
This is the best videos I've ever seen on finger technique, hands down! I just shared your channel with some young beginners I know. Excellent work!
Thanks so much. I am happy the video was helpful.
Perfect presentation on these fundamentals. You have motivated me to break down my hands and build them back up!
Congrats on the Meinl endorsement!
Finally I found what I was looking for. Nobody ever explained that to me in such a perfect and clear way. I love you, Thank You! 🙏🏾
I just started learning drums, I’ve watched tons of videos for beginners and this is what I’ve been looking for! Thank you sooooo much for creating the most educational and helpful video for us!!!
I am glad to finally see someone teach snare in overhand grip. That what we used in the 80's when I was playing. I have never been able to convert to traditional.
That's really cool to hear! I'm glad its helpful!!!
Reversing the stick is old school and I spent many many days doing that when I was in school and that was a long time ago. I’m glad to see that you are teaching this. Thanks and Blessings!
Thank you so much for showing me your technique. You actually show exactly whats going on. I love the tip you threw in there as well about practicing on your fore arms. Im forever grateful ❤
Excellent ! I've been playing drums over 40 years (closer to 50), self-taught, and had to figure all these things out
on my own. ( And did ) ! Great presentation Akhamie Music. GOD Bless !
That's wonderful! Thanks for the watch and the compliment!
I'm a guitarist and this is fascinating!
Bassist over here. Thumbs up!
I am a professional Guitarist also and I was about to write the same comment. 🥁
haha that's awesome. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! Finaly a video where you can see the movement of the fingers. This helped a LOT!🥁😍
Thank you for sharing your technique in this video! A pleasure to watch and learn from you. This is a game changer for me. I never understood this before. You’re a generous spirit, natural teacher, and kick ass drummer. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
This is why technique... knowing the mechanics of how a thing is done, is so important. I imagine how many drummers quit the practice thinking that they just didn't have the "talent" or the "magic touch" when all it was, was mechanics... being taught the proper technique. Thank you for dropping this knowledge!
Hey, no problem and you are absolutely right about learning the mechanics. Then mixing talent with proper technique creates the magic 🪄 🥁
You are great! Thank you for the practice technique.
You are so welcome!
I really like the way you filmed and explained this technique. Easy to understand. Thanks for putting in the work! Great video. 👍
I’ve been playing for many years also and this is the first crystal clear explanation for this technique for fast singles and doubles. Thank you again “A”... 🥁🥁🥁
Probably the best lesson I've seen about finger technique, very explicite. Thanks for sharing and great playing.
It's a great lesson. Finger control is something I've struggled with most.
Wow, thanks! I'm glad it was helpful!!!
I learnt that when I was 14 and your right, you need to learn this if you want to progress. Also, I usually hate most people who post anything, but I like you, you're very likable. 🐝💤
Thanks, I am happy to help and spread some good vibes. Cheers.
Amazing! I only recently realized how important exercising the fingers are for any roll. Thanks for emphasizing it in this video!
This is amazing! I've been looking for this info for 25 years. That forearm technique is genius. Thank you.
Jojo Mayer once told me that he practices technique & rudiments while watching some Star Trek series. This ~30 years ago, but before one here ends asking what she/he should watch while practicing, Star Trek seems to be one of the rare keys...
Yes I've heard the power of passive practicing. Practice while watching Netflix, reading books, etc ...
Which Star Trek series is the best to start with a fingerexercise?
You've made my "A" list for instruction in technique and clarity with simple breakdowns of finger technique in this video. I've been playing for decades and have not graduated any where near your level in technique and creatitivity, thanks for freely sharing these simple things that make such a difference.
She did a great job didn't she. Taking her own good time and making a contribution to to all those that may be unaware. And still we get negative comments from people that got up on the wrong side of the bed. Lol
Thanks so much Stephen. I appreciate the kind words and I’m happy this was a very help lesson on technique. I learned this technique from my drum instructor. Myles Overton III from the Army Band. It took my drumming to a whole new level after I sat and really worked on it. 💯❤️🥁
@@lancehollum857 thanks for the kind words. I’m happy this was a helpful lesson. More videos and lessons to come. 💯🥁❤️
this is exactly what i've been looking for, thank you! I've been using my arms and wrists and straining them till they hurt. This is amazing,.
Thank you for sharing your techniques on training for this most fundamental skill in drumming--most unselfishly at that, I might add!
Gonna use this technique to build blast beats. Great job
Interweaving some modeler strokes for accents with the opposite hand during those blast beats takes it over the top. Great video Akhamie. New subscriber!
Yesss!!! Thanks man.
@@theparrotdiddle2002 Definitely! Thanks so much.
@@theparrotdiddle2002 Do you mean Moeller? If not, what are "modeler" strokes?
Excellent video! I just did this starting exactly 1 week ago. First few days I did for 2-3 hours each night. Just walked around the house with sticks and every possible moment kept it going. Some observations
1) This really points out how weak your weak hand is. I discovered my left hand coordination was far inferior to my right and I'm certain this has hurt my single stroke rolls over the years
2) This also points out that there is subtle movement and pressure required in the thumb and forefinger to bring the stick back. Without relying on the rebound of the drum, the stick can just stay in close to the palm of your hand instead of returning to position. This was particularly prevalent in my weak hand, where as my dominant just did this naturally
3) Returning to the practice pad and implementing it with the same technique is challenging, even if you get good at it without the practice pad. But I plan to persevere as this is obviously crucial
4) After the 1 week mark, my weak hand is light years better than when I first started
So I can't do it yet, but the progress I've made in 1 week is huge and I definitely plan to continue.
Keep up the excellent vids! Want more :) If you ever take requests, I would love a followup to this video that shows how to take this to the next level and apply it to fast 32 note double stroke rolls (not buzz rolls, but rather full strikes). Thanks again!
Thanks SO much for explaining this so clearly! This is the best video on finger technique that I've found (and I've seen a lot of them)!😊
Thank you, the techniques are getting clearer and clearer now. When I try them, I will certainly get back to you.
How did she do this? She's an ALIEN 👽!! DANG GIRL...💕
Super alien! Practice and more practice and more practice actually. Thanks so much for the compliment!!!
ma'am you are so good...God bless you
@@camiloops.official is there any advice if i was start learning drums... I am familiar with some beats so are my hands... I practiced for while... But still beginner... So any recommendations where to start... What type of stick... How to build a routine ... Anything... I believe every advice will help... Thanks in advance God bless you and your family
@@stephanihab my advice when you start learning drums is practice coordination and drum rudiments. When playing drum set each limb is doing something different. The hardest part is seeing how and when they line up. You build a routine by picking up your drum sticks every day. I really stress drum rudiments though. That is the foundation of a solid drummer. I hope this information helps.

Thank you for being probably the only one explaining the transition between using wrists and then fingers! Every other video I see they kindda explain what to do with the fingers, but then show slow singles using wrist and with no explanation of how one turns into the other. Truly, thank you!
Finally, someone who has actually explained what’s happening in the technique. Thank you so much for this video. I will definitely do this everyday while doing other stuff!
Love you! brill
Thank you!
Oh, wow... There's drumming in this video. Thought this was some kind of modeling thing. ❤️😎🔥
Damn, among a bazillion videos this is probably the one that explains the best how to improve your single strokes technique.
Thank you!
I'm thrilled it clicked with you. I am VERY happy to help!
What an excellent lesson. Bravo! Super awesome attitude. The rudiment suggestions were genius too.
“When you are in the backseat” as if drummers don’t practice while they are driving
Just ask my family and friends. I think I’ve played more songs on the steering wheel and dashboard than on drums!
@@tmaddrummer haha awesome 100%
My broken dash trim and vents can attest to this.

Cause its name is humorous.
"A week to a month" - translation 1-3 years for me.
Absolutely fantastic teaching. I have never come out of a training video so clear on what to do and how to feel a stick move. Now all I need to do is get better. Thanks.
Ive been drumming for 2 years and already know this but I just discovered you channel and I LOVE IT! You earned a new sub instantly
Hahahaha shit you made my day :D !!!
That's great!!!I
My problem is that I can play fast uncontrolled singles. They start even but fall apart after 4-6 strokes. Will give this a try and see if I improve further.
Yeah good luck! Just be patient with yourself. It takes so much practice to master anything. You'll do great!
Great stuff Akhamie. I've incorporated those techniques for decades. Very creative setups. I always start my rolls with my left hand. Dig your groove, styles, etc. And love the moon phases shirt!
This was the best finger control in drumming I've ever seen on CZcams. Thank you.
Thought it was important to maintain a gap between your thumb and the side of your index finger, enough room to be able to slide a drum stick into that space, am I wrong?
That's true, keeping a little space so the stick can freely move, but you can still maintain control.
Your is so cute 🥰🥁🥁🥁
Thanks! #gratitudeshake
Thank you so much!! My rolls, off beats, chops, and ride hits are so much sharper with more ummmph. I am forever grateful.
THANK YOU! I have probably watched 10 videos looking for how to build this skill. This is the best by a mile. You are my go-to teacher now.
I'm just hitting flams all the time :(
Flams are good too =)
Yes flams are good too but if this is not what you want to do it's irritating...So maybe start slowly, really slowly if necessary, and (slowly again)increase the speed, don't rush. You can do it! You will do it!! Repetition fixes everything.
