  • Difference Between a Passive and Active Subwoofer: Which is Better?
    Home Theater Setups are super exciting, and the entire process of planning to execution is very overwhelming due to high number of components and devices; interconnecting them together to make the systems easier to use and enjoy.
    One of the most common questions, feedback or comparison you will come across while planning for home theater system purchase is whether to buy active or passive woofers? What are the various types of woofers? And why woofers are important in home theater system? Minimum number of woofers for home theater room?
    Well, if any of these are your questions too, then this video will help you chose between active and passive woofers. It will also help you understand the quantity of woofers required for a desirable home cinema experience. And lastly, where should you use passive woofers and in which case to use active woofers!
    Passive Woofer - These woofers require the use of an external power source, such as an amplifier or receiver. Passive woofers are best first for large rooms that may need multiple units but are recommended to connect to a power amplifier and not directly to an AV Receiver.
    Passive woofers when connected directly to AV Receivers as observed in some of the budgetary home cinema packages like Pioneer HTP series, Yamaha YHT series, Onkyo series, etc. can bring a load on the AV Receiver making it vulnerable to failures as the same receiver is also used by speakers to draw their power. During such scenarios opting for Passive woofers may not be an ideal solution. And that’s why we have….
    Active Woofer - Active subwoofers, also referred as powered subwoofers, include their own power source, using a built-in amplifier. These active woofers are easy to setup and are best used in a single or dual configuration.
    One of the most critical job in active woofers is the placement of these woofers in a home theatre room. Few recommend to put them in the corners, while others choose to keep them in the center.
    There are pros and cons of each, Active and Passive Subwoofer. The six key features which need to be confirmed are -
    1. Room Size - The room size can define the type of subwoofer you buy
    2. Receiver/Amplifier - Passive woofer will require external amplifier in case receiver does not have a dedicated speaker slot for woofer. For active woofers, you have to check the pre out port and the quantity of these pre out ports.
    3. Power - An ideal calculation says that the Woofer power should be equal to or twice the speaker output. Are you matching that irrespective of passive or active?
    4. Connectivity - RCA Component cable for active woofer and speaker cable for passive woofer.
    5. Budget - How much are you willing to spend on these woofers?
    6. Design & Build - Front Firing/Down Firing? And the color/size of woofer to match your room design and ambience.
    The most common subwoofers available in market are active woofers for a simple reason, the placement and quantity selection. You will find limited options in Passive woofers in mid budget segment and might want to shell out more to complete your experience.

      The speakers in hi fidelity home theater are based on low impedence RMS value, while the local amplifiers are PMPO values or Transformer values. They cannot match with each other.
      The room size and dynamics play an important role in selection of speakers, and then selection of Amplifier.

    • @TanmayMehta
      @TanmayMehta  Před 3 lety

      Hey Praveen, you can buy an active sub and connect it to the Onkyo AV Receiver

  • @namrtanirvan8041
    @namrtanirvan8041 Před 3 lety +1

    Bro passive is more powerful than an active 🤦🏻‍♀️ because the amplifier on which it's dependent gives more power and produces more power than an active subwoofer's inbuilt amplifier build , that's why when we get to buy such a big setup or so called costly setup we always got the passive subwoofer because it's enhances the experience of movies and sound ✌🏻

    • @TanmayMehta
      @TanmayMehta  Před 3 lety

      Very true. Passive can be powerful with a separate power amp. But for budget theaters, people rely on only AVR and cannot afford to spend extra on the additional amps for Passive Subs. This video was for the budget home theaters and things to consider while buying them.
      For high end installations and large room sizes beyond 500 sq ft, it is wise to spend on passive subs with power amps.

      Why

    • @josealfredfernandes
      @josealfredfernandes Před 3 lety +3

      @@Nikeshgirnatwar3 1. Passive systems are easy to troubleshoot!
      Eg: electrolytic capacitors are easy to replace. Or just replace that 1 amp, rather than complete sub or satelite.
      2. Better heat dispersion.
      3. Amp doesn't get hit by being super close to woofer! Hope you know, vibration + power amplifier = rip amplifier progressively.
      4. Passive systems are affordable as less engineering is into it.
      Well, active systems are more over portable, even after all the cons, we still go to active systems. If you need feasibility go for passive system also bang for your buck, since it's going to be cheap, if you need portability, then go for active.

      Ok Sir. Active Subs for home cinema start from 100Watts and go upto 500Watts. Passive subs are no doubt better for high end home cinema rooms, where the bass power starts from 500Watts to 2000Watts. For Sony HT IV300, I am not the right person as I specialize in High Fidelity Audio System.
