Only the first item is of concern to me. I am looking for a FRIENDLY place where there is a bit of hustle and bustle. I ran the Columbia marathon a few years ago and the city struck me as very pleasant. How is the downtown, cultural life, etc., for a couple of retirees who do NOT fit the stereotype of needing a big hospital and golf courses and prefer intellectual pursuits to the “55+ leisure lifestyle”? Thanks for the video.
Lots of intellectual pursuits here. We have a thriving and growing arts community (galleries, museum, art house cinema, opera, orchestra, ballet, and theatre houses), lots of athletic events through the university, and tons of outdoor pursuits depending on your preference. We are also the state capital and house state, city, and county government here so political engagement is always an option. Lots of nonprofits are housed in Columbia and would benefit from volunteer time and leadership from deep thinkers. The university also brings many speakers and events year round. Check back Thursday morning for a video specifically about retiring in Columbia. We aren’t your normal retirement destination but we have A LOT to offer retirees!
