  • Just as Holden closed its doors for the last time it produced its fastest, best, most expensive cars. The legendary HSV GTS-R in sedan, ute, and the legendary GTS-R W1.
Here's our review of the HSV GTS-R Maloo Ute, a much classier and better car than the original Maloo of twenty years earlier.
Special thanks to Frazer and Jane for the use of their lovely car.

The death of Holden is a true tragedy. The biggest tragedy is I can't afford a Maloo so had to settle for the American Stang. But if you're ever near Adelaide pop into the National Motor Museum. A fantastic Holden display and tribute in there, well worth the $25 entry.

One other thing from the video is that Holden themselves understood the market change better than made out. They wanted to move into the SUV market, but were told by GM head office that they were not allowed. They build big sedans / wagons / passenger utilities and that's it. The Adventra was an attempt to get something out there to compete, without upsetting GM. Holden asked for access to RHD versions of the USA made SUV, since they weren't allowed to build their own. They were also told no. So, their hands were tied.
Part of their survival was pinned on the export of cars to the overseas markets, since Holden was the only one producing a large sedan by this time. This included the USA bound VE Commodore as the Pontiac G6 and G8. Holden wanted to also send utes but were told no by GM. Then the GFC hit which really held back sales. GM then killed off Pontiac. The VF sedan (no ute allowed still) then went in as the Chevrolet SS. Not that anyone knew, GM completed hardly any marketing for this car. Thus, very low sales. Oh, there was also the Government only Caprice. However, the US auto unions really started to fire up about Australian imports then.
To some, it felt like GM never really wanted Holden to succeed. There's many examples over the years of GM holding Holden back. However, at least they were allowed to export cars. Ford Australia were not even given that opportunity. They were keen to share the Territory and Falcon with other markets too. I think if Holden and Ford were able to get exports going like Toyota were, with Holden building a shared platform SUV (like the Territory) it may have been a different story. Its all history now.

Ford Australia sent the Territory to the USA for evaluation. The Ford executives even admitted it was better than anything Ford was making in America at that time but still would not allow Ford Oz to send them to the states.
What hindered Holden exports was the fact Australia's dollar was so high after the GFC. It became unprofitable for the middle eastern countries to import Holden's as the imports cost them so much and there went Holden's main export market.
You are right in saying that GM held Holden back. Holden done a lot of engineering work on developing a Saab turbo 4 cylinder engine powered VP commodore for the Asian market but that idea was knocked on the head by GM.

As an Englishman I own a 2005 Holden Monaro CV8 which is immaculate and low miles @65k. I used to own a 1999 VT SS (same LS1) and as a saloon car it was epic. I also own a 1962 Ford Fairlane with a SBF which was a contender against Holden in Bathurst, so a big follower of Australian cars. Sadly they all have to go due to a house extension but I will be replacing the Holden not the Ford. Great video guys nice to see your team back together again with Mark. If my wife told me to part with my cars, I would "PART" ways with the wife.💯 If this is the case it's completely not ok on her part. Houses can be fixed, replaced, extensions etc,but those cars that "sadly have to go" would never happen in my household and my wife knows this. I would rather borrow money off the mortgage to pay for a "House Extension" once those cars go you will never get them back and you will definitely regret it 💯%*

Enjoyable video as always. It is correct that you don't see many Holden's on the road anymore. Although, I live a few suburbs south east of Stu, and I own a 2004 Monaro. It sees the street sometimes, but certainly not daily.
My car has a few tweaks to make it perform, handle and brake better, but nothing wild. I still love it the same 20 years later. I found it more useable as a street car than the larger and more powerful supercharged VE / VF cars.
It didn't ever interest me to replace it, or supplement it with a newer Holden. Especially as they didn't make any more two door cars after the third generation Monaro. I purchased many other new overseas produced cars instead. So, I too was part of the problem.
Anyway, keep up the good content, guys. 😊

*An FG F6 31O sedan has less power on paper, but with a couple of little mods would absolutely cream this 6.2 litre Supercharged V8 pushrod dinosaur of an engine. Ford Australia actually had to fudge the numbers on the XR6 Turbo and F6 Turbo on paper because it made heaps more power and torque than the XR8s and GT V8 Falcon because no one would buy the V8 if it had less power and torque (on paper) than the 6cylinder Turbo. Once anyone tested the XR8 and XR6 Turbo, most people who were half smart elected the XR6 Turbo or F631O over the 5.4 quad cam Boss 26O or optioned 29O V8 that was an absolute slug with terrible gearing. The 5.4 quad cam Boss V8 used heaps more fuel than the XR6 Turbo and was heaps slower from ANY speed. The XR8 handled way worse and a lot more expensive for Registration. The only good thing about the XR8 was the sound, and even then for a V8 it didn't sound that great to be honest. I've owned both the XR6 Turbo and XR8. I sold the XR8 to buy my XR6 Turbo and it was the best thing I've ever done in regards to buying and selling cars. XR6 Turbo wins in every category. If the XR6 was exported to USA the Americans would have fallen in love with them like the majority of Aussies have. XR6 Turbo hands down the best combo paired to the German made ZF 6 Speed Auto. I could go on and on but XR6 Turbo is the King.💯*

No power steering, no air-conditiong, drum brakes all round, 4-speed, they didn't even offer an automatic version, crossply tyres, push-out rear windows, terrible headlights. And 998cc of pure old school British bulldog muscle. Yes the old Mini Deluxe maybe pushed out 50 horsepower, maybe 52 on a good day. Being FWD probably let it down in the muscle car stakes though.
