Shinohara VS Douillet - Worst Misjudgement in Judo History

- Shinichi Shinohara (Japan) vs David Douillet (France) at the +100kg men's Judo final in 2000 Sydney Olympic.
As you see Shinohara obviously got ippon by Uchimatasukashi technique.
However chief referee and one sub referee judged it as Douillet's yuko and another sub referee judged Shinohara's ippon.
Even though the misjudgement apparently existed Shinohara had never made excuses and complained about this judge.
I hope horrible misjudement like this will never happen again for all of athletes and for true manly strongest Judoka Shinichi Shinohara.

この信じがたい大誤審により、篠原選手は結局ポイント差を埋めることができず銀メダルに終わりました。
試合後、篠原選手は「自分が弱いから負けた」と、男らしく言い訳をすることはありませんでした。
後に有働由美子アナウンサーがすすり泣きながら経緯を報告していたのをやり切れない思いで見ていた人も多いのではないかと。
個人的には解説者になった篠原さんのボケや野村忠宏さんとの絶妙な漫談が大好なので、篠原さんにはこれからも解説者としても柔道家としても、ご活躍を期待しています。

I was a 10-year-old kid when I was watching it on TV and I do still remember I was super confused and mad at the referee for the misjudgment he made at the biggest tournament like Olympic.
But I also still remember that Shinohara's post-match interview helped calm me down where he said "It was neither the referee's nor the opponent's fault. But it was definitely my fault because I was mentally so weak that I got phased by the misjudgment and couldn't be 100% focused after that. If only I was mentally stronger...". He moved Japanese people's heart more than those who won gold medals.

Immediately after he was thorwn by Shinohara's Uchimata-sukashi (counter-attack against Uchimata), Douillet was obviously disappointed. That showed who really won.
Some people implied that that it was referees' crime of bribery.
Douillet explained in an interview that the decision of the referee was right because it was only his action that failed and no action his adversary.
However he thought at first that the referee was so good to decide this correctly.
Of course it is in question how to decide in such a situation. Saito had the same problem against Yamashita in his last fight. So the Japanese must respect the decision.
Douillet also was of the opinion that the referee should have given nothing in this situation and his second not convincing Yuko was the real good enough to decide the match.

アメリカ在住ですが海外の審判のレベルが低すぎて困る。内股が決 まりすぎて相手が宙で反転プラス1/4転して横腹で着地したのを 「効果」と呼んだり、体落し一本決めた後いきおいにつられて前転 したら相手の「有効」になったり。この相手選手は「試合に勝って 勝負に負けた」ことを知るべきですね。この武士道がわからない輩 は柔道をやらないで頂きたい。
これって主審が『内股透かし』って技を知らなかったんでしょ…

shinohara said he blamed himself because he didnt get another IPPON after the 1st judge. he also said he cried out all night blaming for himself again for not thinking of getting another IPPON coz the result then might have been different. Shinohara has never blamed the judge nor for the opponent. I dont know about you guys but damn, i think he is THE MAN
Shinohara was a true sportsman, I agree...he never bad mouthed the ref, that was grace and sporstmanship in action...total opposite of Douillet
Thank you. The decision itself was controversial, but no one talks about the true jewel which was how Shinohara acted and responded. He took the weight of everything. This is true Judo and the inner wisdom of Jigoro Kano. For you to highlight this means you are understanding the inner wisdom of Kano, and I salute you.

I agree, it's so true and I DO respect him too for being "a good loser" - maybe one of the best loser in judo history - but still I cannot help but wish he had raised his voice about being robbed of a gold medal because, frankly, there's such a big difference between gold and silver. Especially in only-once-in-four-years Olympic Games.

This referee didn't know the technique, Uchimata Sukashi and his name was recorded in history. At that time, all Japanese team are claiming Shinohara's ippon. They misunderstood Shinohara's ippon was downgraded to Shinohara's yuko. Later, Douilet confessed he might have lost at the moment while Shinohara is confident still now.

Il rotolamento di Douillet è pienamente sulla schiena e molto veloce anche se non controllato pienamente nel finale. Come MINIMO c' era Wazari, se consideriamo questo ultimo aspetto. Molto dubbio anche il secondo Yuko per Douillet.
Check out the video to see why this misjudgment happened. At that moment, the referee was only looking at Shinohara. Apparently the referee overlooked Douillet rolling.
Only one Judoka was there to fight, it wasn't the French guy. Shinohara is a really great example of a Japanese Judoka.

There is absolutely no doubt for judokas knowing a minimum the judo, it's an ippon for Shinohara . But the most important is the exemplary behaviour of the Japanese champion since then, it's a great example of what should be the shin.

From the referees view I agree the Yuko score, from one corner judges view I agree the Ippon by sukashi, to Shinohara.
Douillet was lucky, a corner judge sat on his hands instead of intervention. The IJF referees seminar agreed later when watching the video from 4 directions that no score should have been given. But my personal view was with Japan. This result of a score depends on the luck of proximity view of corner judges caused the video referee to be taken seriously. It's so important in kaeshi waza or counter throws, to have a balanced view from both sides. The top and this view favoured Shinohara

Looking at this move several times in a row, I told myself that it was a tie, and that no score should be given in such a case. So I am happy to see that IJF referees agree with this. :)
This victory is indeed dictated by luck, by it would have been the same if Shinohara won, as none of him or Douillet was able to force the victory
Maybe a rule could state be that when one referee gives ippon to one judoka, and the other ones give something else for the other judoka, there should be no score given at all.
I’m sorry but how does IJF say no point on this one??? That’s a terrible call… If IJF admitted it was ippon by Shinohara they would be admitting a completely wrong judge so they agreed to say no call to just save their face.

i have seen worse misjudgements but never in a major bout like the olympic final! Shinohara shows great respect for referees and their decisions by not protesting or appealing, but that should be his gold medal!!

This was clearly Uchimata-Tsukiashi; by the master of this technique himself, I have met with Shinohara since being here in Japan. It was apart of a Judo Demonstration, I sat and I asked him about it, and to this day he still thinks such is unforgivable. However, the Japanese people have honor, he accepted it because we judoka understand the honor code. To me David Douillet is not a true judoka.
What should he have done ??? Some hate in your mind.
Shiohara was just too fast for the judges to understand his excellent uchi-mata-sukashi.

If there is no ippon for Uchimata Sukashi , that should not be a Yoko either .Feel sorry for Shinohara. For people who said there is no Ippon because of no control (please watch the clip again until you see Shinohara right hand grabbed David’s Gi (left hand) to drive him to the right ,Shinohara‘s left hand also made some support power by pushing toward or to the left before he lifted his leg to finish Uchimata Sukashi . Correct me if I say something wrong or unclear .

When you look at video, the correct call is Shinohara ippon via uchimata sukashi. Bad call would be only yuko awarded to Shinohara. A terrible call would be no point awarded for neither. Wrong call is point awarded to Douillet…
Unfortunately wrong call was made… Bad calls happen at every level of sports and unfortunately it happened at the Olympic gold medal match…

Europian Judo is very different from Japanese Judo, so are referees.

This has nothing to do with Japan or France. Shinohara obviously and evidently had a ippon.
I don't know what ref was looking at nor the judges. I believe Shinohara was robbed from his victory. Both fighters trained hard until this moment in Olympic history and to lose like that must be the worst feeling ever. Winning like that is also unsatisfactory as well. A victory with controversy hanging on it. They both Lost.

The judgment of this chief referee should have been revised soon after this match. The problem is how referees recognize the importance of the standardization in refereeing and exclude personal or local judgment. The distortion should be corrected in real time.

Shinohara is a very good fighter, but Douillet is nastier and has more stamina.
No, it wasn't obvious. Both players lost control. Shinohara landed on the wrong side, thus showing that he lost control of any potential counter. The IJF brought this decision upon itself by not having an unambiguous definition of "counter."
If Shinohara was awarded ippon, there would have been very little controversy…
Regardless you can not justify point going to Douillet on this…

Uchi-mata is not a Massutemi-waza. For me, Shinohara's left arm(as the slow motion shows clearly) is the responsable for the ippon. Shinohara wins the match.
