How to construct your Pestrol Possum / Cat Traps

"Okay, you're just received your Pestrol possum trap or feral cat trap. I recommend opening the box where the sign does say, "Open" only because it makes it easier to pull it out from the box. Okay. Place it with handle pointing upwards. You can either use a knife or just some pliers to cut these cable ties. There should be two here. Okay, just get rid of those. Now this is a new supporting arm. You move this out of the way and then pull up the handle. It goes into shape. The older units probably don't have a supporting arm with this on the base. It used to just be one either side and didn't give the possum trap as much protection as it should. This just slides down underneath. That is good to go.
I'll turn this around, so you can see how to attach the following compartments. This here is to secure the back. We'll do that in a few moments' time. Sometimes it comes connected already, sometimes it isn't. You want to use the hook end to attach to the plate inside the trap. This end will explain to you what to do with that in a few moments. Get the hook end, and you want to have it pointing upwards. Take it into the trap, and you'll see a hole right there on the right hand side. Just click it through like so, and you're good to go. Now at this end, you'll see that there are two hook shapes, one closer into the trap and one to the outside. This is probably the trickiest part of the trap, but this rod goes through to the outside one, it just sits around on the outside, so it hooks through. I'll move my fingers out of the way, so you can see.
This other one here is free, and then you'll notice down here on the door that there's a roller. This is where this one is going to go into place. Now to open the door, you push down on the top, and you'll see that pushes that back and enables me to lift the door up. You just want to make sure this is out of the way there to the side, that's all right, okay. Then this hook just connects underneath like so. The trap is set at that point. Now we have this securing wire, so to speak, for the back door. There's two holes. I recommend putting it into the top one, sliding it through both of these holes here and then through the final hole on the other side. In fact, what I should've done is place them through here, through there, through there, through the top hole on the other side, and then we can just flip that into place. That is now locked in so the possum or cat can't leave, and you can use it later on for removing the cat.
You'll notice now the trap is set. You put food on the other side, they'll walk on the plate, it shuts down. Finally, just again to show you how to reset, push the handle down, lift the door up. This plate here just goes straight back onto the roller, and you'll see again, you're good to go. Now the handle is quite well-protected if you do have a cat, and they're trying to just scratch out, you'll be protected. Again, just to release, open up the back door, and they can move through that way. We find for possums, the best thing to use is fruit but have a look on our website or eBay page to find out for some more details. I hope that helps."

I bought one just like this one to trap a wild cat. The cat has eaten the bait and has escaped three times ,so far. I have stiffened the cage with some ty wraps , and it still manages to escape! The only possible way out is through the trap door. Either this cat is huge or very fast. Definitely a smart critter! I would build one ,if I had it to do over again.

Steve, some cats know to avoid stepping on the plate.
A trail cam will answer all the questions about what happened. So valuable if you do a lot of trapping. Sometimes cats will go backward and jam the door open, while others will spring forward away from the moving trap door. Make sure there is nothing else obstruction the door to stop it closing fully. Unfortunately small to medium sized rats willescape from this trap through the mesh or through the gap by the door. Solid trap otherwise.
I had the same problem feral cat escaping. Cheaper version of this trap thinner wire painted. That added bar around the front opening should stop the feral cat eating and escaping , does your trap have that added steel rod square around the front of the trap ? Mine doesn't that's what I'm thinking . I'm in western Australia

The only thing I have found with this trap are animals try to reach from the back and sides to the bait quite often before going inside suggest you that you some shade

The shape of the hook which goes into the feed plate leaves a bit to be desired as it falls out each time each time the trap is activated and is annoying trying to reposition it. A cable tie through the plate hole and around the hook seems to solve the problem.
Mine seem ok in that regard, but hard to comment on yours without seeing how it is configured or if it is bent.

Rabbits can be difficult to lure into the trap unless there is a food shortage. With lots of grass around, I find they're not interested.
Why are no instructions included with the trap? Do you have to pay extra for these?
