/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down House Of The Dragon.
-
Season 2 Episode 5 is now here and throughout this video we're gonna break it all down. This videos gonna be filled with what happens in the episode along with what also happens in the book. So come with me as we talk about the aftermath of Rooks Rest and what the characters are going through.
As always we'll save future spoilers until the end of the video and I'll give you a heads up before we get to that.
-
Now we begin at Driftmark and can hear the echos of Rhaenys theme in the score. Cutting to Corlys inside of the castle the character is shown from the back. Seeing character's like this is something that we get a lot of in this episode with it also being shown in Aemond and Alicent.
The first of these comes when he stands staring at the throne at the end with it mirroring the shot of corlys looking at his.
With Alicent we see as she approaches Aegon being worked on by Maesters and all these shots echo each other. They clearly highlight the gains losses that have come from the battle of Rooks rest with both Aegon and Rhaenys...

That’s awesome, glad to see you get some big sponsors !
No lol
That's some wild timing though bruh! 😂😂😂 that shit was an inch away from happening forreal less than 24 hrs ago.....2024 wildin.
Love the fact a movie about an American Civil War was so successful. Looks like America is manifesting their dreams, so proud. Smh
@@frostbot117 lol damn near, movie wasn't even that big over here, resal thing happening in front of us daily.
Sad that Helaena didn’t get really any screen time. I love how her one line implies that she knows exactly what Aemond did
Useless change. She’s supposed to be going mad, losing her mind. They really messed up blood and cheese
Last week either she got absolutely none
She probably more interesting female character and she the one getting less screen...
This is so lame...
@@MechEagle you’d think they’d need a dreamer now more than ever yet she’s always overlooked by both the writers and her own family. Sad lol
@@olafharoldsonnii4713I don’t think so since everything is a second hand account and not a POV, no one was in the room to know what really happened and history gets muddled overtime , everyone always thought she was mad/ didn’t pay attn to her ever before so maybe she has a diff ending
Man if I was Daemon I’d be pitching a tent outside right next to Caraxes and spending minimal time in that castle.
If I was a dragon rider, I'd spend every available second with my dragon. I'd insist on people meeting outside so my dragon could be with me. Kinda like Nettles
When do you think the show will introduce nettles? @@SquashGuy02134
I said the same thing LOL
It's Alice rivers giving him the visions
I'm guessing that people expect the dragon to go berserk if the dragon rider is killed in it's proximity, I dont think they would want to mess around and find out lol
seeing Alicent Hightower pouting and freaking out when Aemond was named successor was so satisfying to watch.
So idiotic that she set a precedent of a son inheriting before a daughter and tried to renege on it when it suited her. 😒
I love how Larys put her in her place. "Right of succession. Plus we don't want a woman on the throne. What the f is that gonna tell the Realm and Rhaenyra if we have you as Regent?"
Rhaenys told her off back on season 1 about this. Alicent used Rhaenyra being a woman to take her throne and now, had the guts to put herself as the regent.
Like sis, you drunk? This is what you get.
@@kristianparalisan8909 now she's gotta face the demons she created. Especially Aemond.
@@becsterino She really is the perfect example of "well, well, well, how the turn tables"
When they brought the dragon head out everyone was like “you’re doing too much”
I don’t think aegon was laughing bc he didn’t take the battle seriously he was just happy to see his dragon the only thing that actually loves him
This.
He probably thought he and Sunfyre would swoop in and save the day and finally get some recognition instead of being a mindless puppet. He's done heinous shit but wanted to do a good job overall and be considered a good person.
I'm convinced a lot of his womanizing might now be thanks to Alicent needing the tea and having the perfect scapegoat. He has bastards, but I wonder if the tea went to a recipient not on the "label"
He got drunk before going into battle riding a dragon of course he wasn't taking it seriously. He didn't even stop to think that there is a probability of another dragon there bigger than his and more experienced rider.
Ouch 😮
@@TDdelta777 i agree lol I was just saying he wasn’t laughing bc he didn’t take the battle seriously he was just genuinely happy to see his dragon
Jesus the end credits are still playing
Lol

😂
Haha, he would have made this video weeks ago and set it to schedule for the end of the episode :)
The fact that it still amazes people that he can set a release time on the video and watched it before hand is insane
Whatever Alys Rivers has been giving Daemon must be real potent b/c *_I_* couldn't tell if him being chewed out by the Riverlords was actually happening or was some hallucination.
ETA:I mean nobody has spoken to Alys other than Daemon...it's unnerving.
I think it’s real
Her name is Alys lol I used that in fanfic when I was 13. And the injured guy. Wtf is this schlock. I don’t watch it but every review if it just adds to the parody.
It's as if he's progressively losing his mind, I felt as if he's even imagining her
@@Brainstrip Ya, I don't think anyone else at Harrenhall has even acknowledged her, just Deamon
@@awhartig5847they keep looking around like…who is he looking at? Who is he talking to?
Jayce: "Let's find riders for those two giant dragons we aren't using."
Me: You waited until NOW to think of this?!?!?!?
The smallfolk have already seen a dead dragon, the illusion is broken, so now seems like an appropriate time to break what was before a taboo
Daemon had clearly already thought of it. The new info is looking further than just Targaryans (they are running out of those)…
They also previously had a massive advantage in dragon numbers and have now effectively lost their only 2 experienced war dragons with riders, Deamon seemed to think that Melyes and Caraxes together could at least neutralize the threat of Vhagar, now Vermithor and Silverwing are the only dragons that can be relied on to fill that role. Giving out dragons when they didnt need too wouldnt be good for the longeveity of targaryen rule post-war.
@@Kk-fj5tn That's my point. Finding riders for them through absolutely any means necessary, should have been the absolute top priority from the onset. Apparently every last one of Rhanerya's "military advisors" are incompetent. Or the writers...
They never bond bastards to dragons before except for well….rheneyra’s kids
The Greens parading Meleys’ head seems like a parallel to when the Freys paraded a beheaded Robb Stark’s corpse with Grey Wind’s head attached on him post-red wedding as well.
Both times, they intended to spite their enemies and show that they’re unbeatable while not realizing that the spectators had a totally opposite reactions from what they intended. For the greens, it’s the small folks, who no longer viewed the Targaryen and dragons with the aura of invincibility anymore. For the Freys, it’s Arya. They killed and disrespected her brother like that in front of her. She will never let this go and oh boy, how she never let that go was glorious.
I'd say the red wedding turned more than Arya against the freys,if going by the book, every house north and south saw them as more spineless than before and has the entire north plotting against them and the Boltons
The North remembers. Winter has come for House Frey. I can watch that scene over and over again.
But Meleys killed like fifty innocent people, many of whom were their family and friends, at the coronation only a few weeks ago... Shouldn't they be happy?!?
The Freys were worse because they broke the (what was it, bread and salt tradition?) house safety rules (my brain is only thinking of 'No business on Continental ground' right this moment 😂).
Tbh parading Meleys definitely undermined themselves the same way.
The rat catcher's dog got me weepy. Despite the kick, rat catcher really loved that dog. The dog stayed around his master till they moved him. Seen this in real life. Sad af.
I think Cheese saved his dog by kicking it. If it followed them into the keep during the assassination it would have probably been killed.
@@DogOfWar64 l think so too.
Heartbreaking 💔
Absolutely tired with daemonds Luigi’s mansion side quest
Yea its getting old now
Real. Keep that sh3t two episodes 💀
@@Hiddenone995maybe they only had Matt smith for a limited time
Pointless filler to kill time in an episode at this point .
I think they're slowly exploring the character's deepest thoughts, intentions, and motives... This episode was way too much but things are moving, he is moving, the castle is being renovated, his relation with the witch is progressing, there movements within the riverlords, Rhaenyra is finally sending for him... I think it was a good choice to put him there for half the season. I hope it's the end of it next episode. If you read the book you know what's going to happen with him there!
I really like how they show the impact this war has on the small folk too. Like sure dragons battling each other is very cool, but seeing rotted food being sold at King's landing because of the the blockades really helps ground the show into realism IMO
They could've eaten the dragon head they just marched through the street...
No dragons were harmed in the filming of this episode
The scene with Fry's dog waiting for him still chokes me up every time I see it.
Why? Why would you do this to me?😢
🎶 If it takes forever, I will wait for you 🎶 😪
They will eat ppl before they eat cheese. all of kings landing is starving, part of the plot, yet a dog is alive?
I think Cheese dog is still alive because he has trained as a rat catcher. He catches rats and has survived by eating them. But by the end of this season they better show someone adopting Cheese Dog, because I will worry about what happened to him
You can’t buy a fresh orange at the street market, but CC has fresh lemons to clean his sword? Think about it!
This royals always have better than the common folk. They are clearly hoarding the food and such for themselves
Aegon waking and saying "Mummy" killed me 😢 Tom does such a good job of making him human and likeable!
Helaena: Was it worth the price?
Aemond: Got to pay the cost to be the boss
Gotta pay the troll toll…

When Ser Simon is talking to Daemon, Alys Rivers straight up disappears behind Simon. You dont see her actually walk out the door.
@@ericappolonia6924 I noticed this!!
Yup!! It's like they want the audience to know she may not be real...only Deamond sees her 🤔
Noticed this! Wonder how much we’re getting is actually her or how much is the weirwood bed he is sleeping on, also worth noting how simon looked in her direction seeming confused.
I loved this detail!
Oh Alys Rivers is veryy real in the books. Let's see what happens in the show
Naaah, Laenor died off screen. That's why Seasmoke is so restless lately. Mysaria saying "Maybe he is lonely" was clearly a "hey, the bond between Laenor and Seasmoke is gone, folks."
I like how Alicent was upset they wouldn’t want a women in charge 🤦🏾♂️
You may have missed at least two of the points of the show.
@@MirdjanHyle you may have missed the sarcastic point of my comment

Heavy Spoilers is Sunday's after-party
Paul, Ryan, the Reel Rejects Reaction, I enjoy them all.
The Larys joke around 1:25-1:32 had me almost spit out my drink
I look forward to your breakdowns every week, immediately following the episode! You ROCK!
On his sickbed, it was Aegon's left side which was burnt. In battle, it was Aegon's right side which was roasted by Vhagar.
Yeah i noticed that too 🤔 did they f**k up?
It's most likely that the real damage came to him in the fall, not the single blow of fire up in the air.
@@roosasainio3744the fall has little to do with which side of him is burnt lol
The best part of my Sunday night routine. Right after the show, I run to watch your breakdown. Thank you Paul for all your hard work!! 🤗
Same.
Omg, when Meleys looked back, that’s what killed me and that was so done for the audience to get tugged at the heart. Same as the dog sitting by his owner taken down and thrown in the wagon: he still kept following him.
I don’t think Alys willingly goes with Aemond. Or if she did, it seems like she set him up SPOILER
She saw what would happen and where Daemon would be and she still sent him there. Daemon somehow knew to have his saddle unhooked as well which let him jump onto Vhaghar and kill Aemond. It seems suspicious to me. The way they’re setting her up as someone who is concerned about the innocent people tells me she’s not going to be to happy with Aemond putting everyone at Harrenhall to the sword and burning all the Riverlands either. She might have set it up so that she could kill two birds with one stone. Or have the birds kill each other
"I thought the dragons was Gawds"
I *LOVED* that line.
Viserys' grandfather, King Jaehaerys, brought peace amongst the realm when it was full of agnst and unrest due to the once thought perverse Targaryen way of life. How he, Jaehaerys; The Conciliator, initially accomplished this feat was through piety and relating the Targaryen dynasty to gods in human form.
Showcasing and boasting Meley' rotting head to the people in times of war and famine, *after* the Kings firstborn was murdered by beheading, mind you... not the brightest idea. To most, I'd argue this would cause civil unrest and fear, spreading an aura of doom, rather than the presumed morale booster they hoped it'd be. For decades, they've not always favored the Crown, but the Targaryen sitting the throne had always been revered by the realm. It'd be akin to parading the pope or the Queen, cheering their passing. It's blasphemous because they are such beloved people and it's hard to believe it could happen.
Daemon and Aemond' paths are so parrelel, the showrunners and writers are not even hiding the fact that their fates will intertwine. Daemon, second son, his impatience and arrogance only cause issue for Rhaenyra and the Blacks. Whereas Aemond, second son, is cold and calculating. Just as ruthless yet his patience is proving fruitful for the Greens and harm to his brother.
When Aemond and the greens reclaim Harrenhal, Alys Rivers will presumedly twist and bend his mind as well. I don't want to spoil what happens, but they are mirror reflections each other.
Thanks for working so hard to literally get the videos out right after we finish watching this week's episode!
This is the series that defines this channel. The effort and length of breakdowns for HOTD are just on another level Paul. I do check on Ryan Airy’s versions so I can see all the crazy leaps he takes… “Aemond now has the dagger, that’s shaped like a dragon’s eye, BECAUSE HIS HEART LIES IN THE EYE OF THE DRAGON!!” lol he kills me.
You’re the man.
I’m so over the Daemon story line. I find it hard to believe that people who haven’t read the books will understand WTH is going on.
the only hint was when he called her witch.. otherwise I’m sure so many are confused
I’m over his storyline.
Bored asf of seen Daemon's fever dreams
It's not that difficult. Typical storyline in most fantasy.
@@stephaniespain9849 pay attention to what is going on and what type of show this is, also who the writing is based off, a lot of what that is, is foreshadowing and character deconstruction.
Glad to finally see Alicent and Rhaenyra undermined so the boys can play and exercise their demons. Also Corlys, time to name Alynn as heir.
I think the handmaiden is in search for Dragonseeds. You saw a clip of the girl Aegon assaulted when the one guy was talking about being a Dragonseed.
1) Both the women of Team Black and Team Green are tired of the shenanigans of the males
2) Aemond should've brought Melee's carcass back for the plainfolk to cut up and eat, killing 2 birds with one stone
3) The Witch of Harrenhall never blinks her eyes
Cheese’s dog making another appearance brings so much joy such a loyal boy 🥲
Aemond and Daemon are both Machiavellian. And just like Machiavelli, they are both princes trying to attain the Thorne to become king by any means necessary. They embody and personify the charter trait perfectly.
Theres not enough episodes in the season to have a filler like this one
agreed this was some bs. 8 episodes is insane why are networks doing this?
@@threeholePUNCHifyhad alot to do with the writers strike remember it was supposed to be 10 episodes
Calling a drama filler is the DUMBEST thing I've read
@@stillatinwe got so much on daemon’s psyche I really don’t see how people can call this filler at all, people aren’t paying attention to what the story is actually about and don’t understand GRRM writing (which by the way they have done a pretty damn good job with the characters in this and parallels and portents while having a lot less to work with than they did for GOT)
Thank you, this definitely felt like a filler!
Damn Aemond really pulled a he who laughs last lasts last at last laugh laughing
i haven’t had any complaints thus far but this was for sure a filler episode I couldn’t help but laugh at the end when Rhae and Jace were pointing back and forth at each other when the seed idea blossomed 😂
Agreed, and it kind of feels like there have been many of those despite being so early in the show. And I’m not saying that dragon, fire, blood and guts are the only episodes that really make the series great, but there’s just so much benign dialogue going on that, I’ve seen week after week. It’s really disappointing.
I love when they came to storm harenhall, daemon asked if the pudding was ready
The knee being put back in place was crazy
Is Alys Rivers real tho? I haven't seen anyone else other than Daemon interact with her. The scene where she tells him he never met his mother and they are interrupted feels like he's imagining her, look at her walk away as if leaving the room but disappearing behind whats-his-name, he also looked her way as if wondering who Daemon was talking to.
Yes! This is giving me a definite « 6th Sense » build up to a « Ghosts of Harrenhall » reveal.
In the books, she's veryyyy real. Don't know about the show.
Agree. Like when Simon walked in the room he glanced over to where Alys was, but I don’t think he actually saw her. I think only Daemon can. Poor Simon. He’s trying to figure how to get this crazy dude out his castle. He really should send a raven to Rhaenyra.
Dude I love your humor. Keep them jokes coming.
When Alicent walked out of Aegon's chambers, Aegon muttered "Mummy"
Just one issue I had, Rheanys and Meleys literally burst into the sept at the end of last season and killed hundreds/thousands of people that lived Kingslanding. I understand they wanted to show that a dragon’s death would not be taken lightly but I thought at least some people would be cheering but it seemed like every single person was disheartened by the beheaded dragon.
She could have also burnt everyone in the sept ending the war before it even started Maegor would have killed all his family and the small folk 😂
They’re starving to death I think they could care less about the dragon being paraded around as a victory for the kingdom. If anything the dragon highlights that this war is far from over which means more suffering for the common people.
They know that for every action there is a reaction and that the ones who will end up suffering the most are them.
I have a thought that maybe they have viewed the dragons as a godly act previously, thus the “I thought they was gods” and then Hugh saying “it’s just meat” I think it’s part of something yet to pay off.
@@robertdominguez3482So why weren't they allowed to eat the dragon meat?
Craaaaazy chapter, the build up is amazing and the breakdowns too lol
I think your view of the reaction to the 🐲 parade was influenced by the books description. I think the people were terrified and disgusted by it. Whiteworm even says they saw it as a bad Omen.
What was the scene with the people on horseback riding thru a forest? It occurred right after Elinda, the handmaiden, told the knight that she needed to see an old friend.
Does anyone else think he looks kinda like Vinny from Jersey shore?
Unpopular opinion, but I think they should’ve either released 2 episodes each week or get rid of atleast 1/3 of the dialogue. I love a good slow burn but I can’t help but feel like some episodes seriously are missing soo much! Idk
Preach
Yeah this episode fell flat. Hopefully the last three finish strong
I sooo agree
I mean this is how GOT shows have always been brother, there’s set up episodes and amazing battle episodes like ep 4
@@chrisdavis723 *sister ☺️ and you’re right! But I think GOT handled the slow burn better because the show had sooo many houses and characters that were grasping at power along with the issue with the White walkers as well as Dany practically building herself from the ground up. The fault with HOTD is that it is still very much just a 2 sided conflict, no matter how many plot lines they introduce which can make some scenes a little boring and repetitive rather than actually moving the plot forward.
I am pretty sure the director meant those eggs were Danys eggs, as in the “prop eggs” used in GoT’s.
Just so you know, Paul...i paused Ryan's video to watch your's
The editing is so impressive, especially so soon after the episode aired. Great video, as always!

How do yall not know that people like this dude get the episode earlier than the common folk 😂
makes me laugh that people are shocked. He gets the episodes at least a day prior.
I didnt know that, but I assumed. Its either that or he's got a time machine, and I felt like "he gets the episodes early" seems a _bit_ more plausible
11:58 A24 are really jumping on that Pittsburgh incident.
I didn't like how Alicent started acting like she cares about Aegon or that she's sad he got injured. She's likely the entire reason he went to Rook's Rest in the first place after basically telling him how worthless he is.
Same. There was a comment saying she wasn't believable as and could tell the actress never had children. I had to respond saying Alicent's actions throughout the series never showed she cared for her children that much. She did more when they were kids and it looks like she grew more distant with then the older they got.
I thought they would address her contemplating the fact that it might have been her fault Aegon did this... Nope. Does she realize? Did she consider it?
@@terryd3113her face over his body in bed definitely shows concern. There are just many concerns to be had right now. So so blah. Terrible writing. The last great scene was Arryk vs Erryk!
@@BlushGushwhat was terrible about the writing?
@@DizzyMarrow Nothing is really happening and there is far too much girlboss "women love peace men want war" stuff being repeated, despite the war being entirely the fault of Alicent and Rhaenyra.
@@christianbroadbent7489 I just want you to know that seeing as you didn’t watch the first season, being about how primogeniture being what causes the war in the first place and propels the story, the story having flawed female characters that you’re seeming to miss is absolutely hilarious to me.
This episode was great, I loved "the hour of the wolf" line. I also love how baela is like a lil rhaenys carrying own her "will of fire". I can't wait to see whats to come. Also paul, please read the whole book lol that'll be really cool 😅
I didn't get it at first but now I'm thinking... Wolf sounds similar to zwölf (12 in German). Pretty cool!
Damn Paul mad respect pushing the envelope of demonitization twice for jokes. first telling larys to keep it in his pants next what the kings guard are breaking and we're not even at 5 minutes
I really like the change up with the readings in this video. I'm glad that you left parts of you with the book to break up the visual monogamy, and I also liked the scroll thing you all did with the new video (sorry, just getting caught up!) and having the scroll being written while you spoke would be cool too, but I'm sure that's way easier said than done.
I wanted to make sure I cheered you on with the change up, since I was one of the plebs who pointed out the other thing. I hope y'all are doing well.
This recap was better than the actual episode …
I want to buy the books / books of this series. The book hes reading from is called fire and blood ?
Poor Kings Landing can't even enter their goats in peace XD
Love your musical references, bro. Big up to that Fleetwood Mac album!
Great video! And crazy turn around for this level of detail and editing 👏👏
Honestly, if Team Black doesn't make a competent move soon, Im switching to Team Green. They're awful and stupid but at least they're _doing_ things. Rhaenyra, _do_ something. Daemons doing more and hes just being schizophrenic
I don't think Aemon was pointing the dagger at Aegon I think he was able to read some of the blade by the way he was looking down the blade
My man Paul is quick.
2:51 until the Dowager Queen Alicent ordered the city goats closed and barred 🐐
Daemon is going mad..
I'm going mad watching Daemon going mad.
I almost cried when as Alicent left the room Aegon murmured “Mummy” 😢
