Thank you for the ride down memory lane. I grew up two blocks away from the D-train stop at Bedford Park Blvd, and rode the D-train frequently down to Manhattan with my mom. I attended day camp at the Williamsbridge Oval 4 summers in a row, and once each summer, they’d take all of us kids on the D from the first stop at 205th Street all the way to Coney Island. We’d spend a few hours there and then make the long trip back on the D.
We moved from The Bronx in 1977, but I will always be a Bronx boy.

Those IND lines have such massive interlockings. I can't imagine how much must have gone into the track designs and design of the relay circuitry. Thank you for all of the amazing content, it's been keeping me glued to CZcams with a copy of the interlocking diagrams!

I lived in Gravesend in 1986 (when it was the B, not D, train). Between the Manhattan Bridge closures and the entire 4th Ave subway having skeletonized track from 25th St to 59th St, the trip took forever at 10mph MAS. Many evenings and weekends, it could take almost an hour and a half to get from 25th Ave to Pacific. Rush was usually 50-65 minutes. Glad to see it running so fast now.

So sorry that you or anyone ever had to escórieme that painful feeling. The trains can be reliably disappointing at times when we miss it after a long journey towards the platform.
The segment between 62 St and 71 St is so aesthetically pleasing to listen to. I make the trip back to Brooklyn from Pennsylvania about 4 or 5 times a year ever since I heard the R68s are next for retirement within the next 10 years. Those things clank the overhead structure like nothing else, and I'm going to miss them when they're gone. They've been around Brooklyn since I was a kid when I first lived there. That's what got me into trains and eventually my career in the railroad; watching those wheels clank over 86th St as a toddler. Plus, with all the visits every year, I get to see my old house on Bay 40th Street! So many fond feelings well up inside of me every time we fly over the West End line and I get to look out over Brooklyn; such a feeling of community comes over me. The northbound express run on CPW between 59th and 125th is my favorite express run in the entire system (and yes, I've ridden them all at least once). The southbound is sweet too, but nothing beats the the Bronx-bound one.

@@williamerazo3921 Valid opinion and no one can argue with you for having it. It would be interesting to test it one day and see. Maybe the museum will have a VR video of the two "racing side by side" showing the speeds of all the different trains for the express runs that happen without any delays. It would be a nice thing to see, maybe on special Sundays...where trains get to run express freely, without major delays, to show you guys how fast the trains can really dip down the system.
I do remember enjoying the uptown run better than the downtown run.

I watched this video the most because I live close to 155th Street and 8th Ave where the D train stops at. Most of the time I pretend to play the conductor, calling out all the stops and transfers from 205 street to Stillwell. That was fun to do.

Great quality as usual, this is my favorite train in the whole nyc transit system due to the fact that I’m from the Brighton line area and this used to b local on the Brighton when I was a kid, they can put it back and still use the Q as express to broadway , jus saying 😅

There are no plain rock walls-all concrete lined. The concrete is flaking from age and water ingress.

Taking the D or the N down to Coney Island on a cold winter Sunday was one of my favorites, especially in the cold weather, perhaps even with some snow coming down. Just pretend you don't see the whitefish....
What was so special about those moments?
@@wtaenyc Not so sure if you really want know. I am an artist and I just loved the cold and the wind and the sand. It's pretty much like a Fellini movie, and I like his movies a lot. My wife was also a visual artist and we would go together. She was a great fan of Coney Island because in her teens she would ride the horse she exercised down the horse trail on Coney Island Boulevard. It's not really there any more, or at least, I don't ever remember seeing a horse going down the middle, though I suppose it was still possible last I was there. That's all a long time ago now.
We appreciate you for sharing this. Those moments you enjoyed, you and your wife, are things that make this city so amazing. Coney Island has always been special to most so it’s honorable for you to share some of your moments with that area, with us. It’s a testament to how times have truly changed and where the city was long ago. Thanks again 🫡🏆
@@wtaenyc I will tell you this one. When my wife was a young teenager, she and her sister would to to Ebbet's Field and stay in line overnight to get tickets for the next day's Dodger's game. Times have certainly changed.

I haven’t lived in NYC for over 30 years, so when did the D and the B trade routes?
Amazing how when I rode the subways in the 70s and 80s it was stressful, now watching these “experiences” are oddly relaxing! LOL!
On February 22, 2004, full service on the Manhattan Bridge was restored and D trains were extended via the north tracks of the bridge to Brooklyn, replacing the W as the Fourth Avenue Express (late nights local) and West End Local to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue. The D was moved to the West End Line instead of returning to the Brighton Line, which it had run on since 1967, to provide 24-hour service to both the Concourse Line and West End Line and avoid running two separate (B and D) shortened services outside of weekdays.

Though you haven’t lived here for a long time, it’s an honor to be able to bring you a line you rode years ago and we’re thankful that it’s now relaxing rather than annoying.

This was my 2nd main line as a kid. The other was the 4 line. Wish I could ride the new subway cars but I moved.

Awesome Job WTAE! I remember the 6th Ave Lines in Manhattan due to Rockefeller Center and such. And the D Line is a great line, I thought they upgraded to the new Rail cars a while ago? I was curious of something but by any chance, Do you collaborate with any of the other MTA divisions such as the LIRR and Metro North. Also the Staten Island Railway? Also are you planning for other States Railways such as NJ Transit Railway lines? CDOT New Haven Line? Also a collaboration with Amtrak? I only been a few times to NYC. I always find the whole network of NY Penn Station and Grand Central so fascinating. So many trains so frequently.
Thank you so much. We truly can’t wait for the day when the D train, and other lines, are able to have the upgraded equipment running; we’ll have to wait awhile for that we’re guessing. As for any future collaborations, it’s something we are currently working on and looking forward to making it all possible; those systems would truly be an even more amazing experience.

Always wondered why the D and A express tracks always dip or rise up inbetween 125th street and 96st street
Its interesting to see isn't it
it really is one of the most surreal experiences for me on a daily basis
They dip down and rise up due to Central Park being right next to the subway line.
In the Downtown-bound direction as shown in this video, first the Uptown Express (A & D) track dips down at 110th Street to allow the Uptown Local (C & B) track to shift over to run above the Downtown Local track. Then both Downtown tracks lower themselves to meet the Uptown Express track, which rises up to run alongside the Uptown Local track at 103rd Street.
There is a similar exercise that happens between 72nd Street and 59th Street at the other end of Central Park.

Awesome video. Of course everyone knows that the classic chase scene from the "French Connection" was filmed under these very tracks, when Popeye Doyle, the character played by actor Gene Hackman, commandeers a car under the Bay 50th station and chases a northbound train (a R-42 with "N" train signage in front, not a "B" train, which it should have been) to catch a shooter who tried to kill him. I was walking to school one morning in the winter (I remember it was cold) and saw them filming the scene under the Bay 50th Street station.
Thank you so much for sharing that moment of history. It must have been extra cool to have been able to see them filming it live and it’s an honor that we are able to duplicate that experience.

-39:38 This rise must be to get over the R train (Montague Tunnel) tracks underneath, heading off to the right. The R train has a very, very steep climb here as it is, per it's video. These tunnels were originally done in 1915, but had to be reopened and done again in the late 1950's for the grade separation. Now I hear that the grade separation still is not good enough, because of the antiquated signalling system. GOOD GRIEF !!! 🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃

There is ZERO tunnel that leads to Montague Tunnel in that area… Not only that but its nowhere near the R train. This section runs under the 6th ave local tracks, which also goes over the L train.

Great video ! I love those cab rides. The D line isn't one I'm used to ride when I'm in NYC.
Side note : 4:08 this is one of the things that shock me the most every time I come to New York : hospital workers in scrubs in public transit. Where I'm from it is a big fat no no ! Scrubs stay on hospital's premises and get cleaned and sanitized by the hospital's laundry or a subcontractor certified for biohazard cleaning. No one wants potential transfers, one way or the other.

We know that sometimes over here, some schools require you to wear scrubs while in class so we can hope that those you saw, are in school and not necessarily going to “work,” where the germs can be transferred. Here in Paris were I live, there's a new golden age of transit with new tram lines opening by the dozen (T1 East & T3b extensions, T10, T12, T13) and the Grand Paris Express advancing steadily, including extensions to lines M1 East, M11, M12, M14, RER E West and the 4 new lines (125+ miles) M15, M16, M17 & M18 opening in stages in the next few years.
Plus the new Cable C1 urban cable car / gondola being finished in the Southern suburbs as a light extension to line M8. Almost a whiff of Chinese type of booming development.
It's gonna be like Disneyland for subway / transit fans with 1 or more new attractions, hum, sorry, lines and extensions opening every year. And it has already begun.
You just CAN'T miss this urban transit-a-palooza !
And that's a good excuse to come stuff your face with French cuisine at least once a year, just saying...

Maybe you can put us in touch with the right folks that will allow us to give you guys the French version of this experience. We can even put it in the museum for folks to come and watch, not only the train as it goes, but also to use it as a history lesson, to stop and show folks different areas of the system and when they were built etc. Either way, we would love to come ride the trains in France and enjoy the lovely system and city.

If you want to catch a visit of the building sites you'd better not wait too long :
The works are quite advanced on the Grand Paris Express as the first batch of new tunnels (M15 South, most of M16, first halves of M17 & M18) are finished and currently being equipped.
Track, catenary and cable laying is underway in all completed tunnels and finished in M14's North & South massive extension.
The first peak of digging with more than 20 TBM's working simultaneously under Paris is already behind us. Most of the TBM's are being reassigned to M15 East & West sections.
3 dozens of the 68 new stations of lines M15, 16, 17 & 18 are currently being equipped and decorated.
They have now started building M15 East & M15 West (the 2 last stages of M15) to complete the loop and they are finishing the long midline viaduct of M18.
GPE-adjacent projects like M4, M11, M12 & M14 extensions are either finished and open or in their finishing stages, all major works like digging having been completed.
RER E West extension's new 5 miles of tunnel under Paris core and business district are finished ; the tunnels and the 3 new stations on the tunnel are being equipped.
Only the East extension of M1 is still in its early stages of development and not set to open before the 2030's.
M11 large extension (doubling the length) opens in a few months, M14 massive South extension up to Orly airport opens in 2024, M15 South in 2025...
Mid September were the French "patrimony days" which are a kind of giant countrywide "open-doors" weekend for everything from administrations, castles, sewers and museums to the national bank or archives, state furniture reserves, subways, factories, etc. Nearly everything that is usually closed to the public opens for a couple days on the same weekend.
A month later, mid October, La Société du Grand Paris, the public company in charge of the GPE development did its own open-door weekend on the same model : for the occasion they opened 16 of the GPE works sites to the general public. They guided and commented tours to more than 3000 people during the weekend.
I'm beyond furious to have missed it.
But given the success they'll most certainly do it again next year. That's probably a visit you should attend.
The mass of construction works was simply astonishing because per EU and French laws, new tunnels must have emergency exits no longer than 800 meters / half a mile apart. That means hundreds of simultaneous digging sites.
For the 5 miles of RER E West extension's new tunnel alone, it required 9 exit wells besides the 3 new stations. I'll let you do the math for the 115+ miles of new tunnels for the GPE core project...
I'll see if I can get in touch with someone either at the regional transport oversight entity (IDFM / STIF), or Société du Grand Paris or RATP or SNCF.

You can definitely tell the difference the CWR makes on CPW. You can barely hear the train.

D train extension to Throggs Neck, from Norwood.
Leaving Norwood in a circular tunnel, the ones used for crossing boroughs. In this case, it’s the Bronx River.
High speeds.
First stop:
Burke Ave - accessible, ordinary design, island platform, and connection is available to the 2 and 5 trains, and the Bx39, and BxM11 bus services.
Normal tunnel for now, and normal speeds.
Would have to turn north a bit to go along Burke Avenue, and under the 2 and 5.
Next stop at:
Bronxwood Ave - accessible, ordinary design, island platform, and connection to the Bx8 bus service.
Normal tunnel when leaving the station. Tracks are together, and faster speeds.
Next stop:
Laconia Ave - accessible, cool design, island platform, and connection to the Bx30, 60, 61, and 62 bus routes.
Same tunnel, slightly slower speeds because of the turn soon.
Along Burke Avenue…
Next stop,
Gun Hill Road - accessible, island platform, ordinary design, and connection to the Bx28 and Bx38 bus services. Further connection to the 5, by walking to the Gun Hill Road station and using OMNY or your Metrocard.
Would switch from going along Burke Avenue and would go along Gun Hill Road, then making a turn to go along Eastchester Road.

Allerton Ave - Eastchester Rd - side platform, accessible, ordinary design, and connection to the Bx25, Bx26, and Bx31 bus services.
South along Eastchester Road.
Circular tunnel, going under Pelham Parkway.

Not completely sure if anyone mentioned this before but I would like to see a version of this with the rush hour bronx express when it goes back into service because as far as I can tell what may be called the D diamond instead d is running local in the bronx 24/7because of track work or somting.

Also WTAE I want to say thank you for the videos as well and NYC wouldn't be where its at without its Mass Transit Network, Subway, buses, Regional Railways and such. Its a city that keeps on moving and it would feel odd if NYC just stopped. I am glad to see these videos as I have been to NYC a couple of times but its Mass Transit Network is fascinating and has alot of history. The most important of all people use it in their daily lives. Without the NYCT Employees, NYC would grind to a halt and I cannot picture that with a city as grand as NYC. I don't know if you follow Marvel but there is plenty of Marvel characters that make NYC its home and some of the superheroes do use NYCT. @@wtaenyc Thank you for the response, yes the Marvel characters espically Spiderman aka Peter Parker, Miles Morales and so forth uses the subways to get around, and its true, the subways, buses, Railroads, and more transportation modes are the lifeblood of NYC. I am so amazed and fascinated on how Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station operates with so many trains coming in and out, so fascinating! Are you excited for the new LIRR Grand Central Madison Station opening soon?
Railroads are one of the biggest economic engines of many cities globally. And even with the Freight Trains they are amazing as well.

At the 161st-River Ave Yankee Stadium station I noticed curtain cinder block type walls separating the local and express tracks. Does anyone know if those walls were part of the original construction when the station opened in 1933?

On these videos, Could you point out where the tracks are going when the branch off? Like local to lower level, or F to 2Av? Its cool to see all the tracks but it would be cooler to know where the other ones are going... and when youre going under points of interest like a river or the Cross Bronx

You can look up the track map online. The first track that goes up was going to the gran concourse train yard. The track that went under after the next stop was the express peak track through the Bronx

The D is my train of choice when going to Luna Park and Deno's Wonder Wheel Park. I live in New Jersey, so I'll take an 8th Ave train from NY Penn Station to West 4th Street and transfer to the D there.

Great question. The operator operates the entire trip, taking a break once they reach the last stop. This is the case for all subway lines in NYC.

Those blue lights are for emergency purposes, so that the trained employees can locate and access the necessary emergency devices needed during that time.

I certainly have.
However, I would have it run along the majority of its original route, terminating at South Ferry with through tracks to a rebuilt Third Ave El, which too would operate its original route.
Tracks going over the Brooklyn Bridge would be for rebuilt Brooklyn El Lines like the Myrtle Ave, Fifth Ave, and Fulton Street Lines, but would connect to the rebuilt Manhattan El Lines at a new City Hall terminus that would be shared with an Alphabet City Spur of the Third Ave El.
