We forget that freedom is the exception in human history. Freedom in the West has been a process that included Magna Carta, the English Civil War, the American and French Revolutions, the defeat of Nazi Germany and the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. Now we are in a time when freedom is being attacked again. The question is, do we still have the stamina to keep it, or will we be too complacent?

Accountability is distinct from crisis. We are taught to suspend our discernment and to deem ourselves as the litmus-test with which to measure our notions of democracy.
It isn't just about being right, it is about the truth. Only 1/5th of our GNP is imputed on the token free-economy. The subsequent 4/5ths of GNP beyond comprehension without the federal monopoly of violence, and everything else this implies.
The notion of democracy has been extensively explained and attempted to practice it. The issue is the political perspective in truth as you correctly say. But what truth is the genuine rational comprehension of it.?? The political power determining the end product established has been historically , an exclusive one. . A manipulated mechanism to serve the few by wealth corruption and monopoly . So what political power is needed to make democracy a reality?? In the USA we can presently find a specific case of such controversy between the wealthy and the progressive voices. Democracy is about to be made impossible by the GOP perfecting a chains and locks constitutional coup. At least they think is such.

Trump simply told the truth. II dont know what would have happened if the left tried to not treat Trump like dirt and lie about him, but I guess we will never know. have no idea what Carter was like. I know he ruined the country, and we are still paying for what he did to education. But Hilary Clinton lied about Trump non stop. Biden was worse. In fact, the supposed referees were arguing with Trump more then Biden. Biden actually said that 200 million Americans died of Covid, and Wallace didn't even point out the crazy number. And when Trump said that there was a vaccine ready to go, Biden said "THAT IS A LIE!!!" and Wallace nodded along, and talked about the cold dark winter...turned out Trump was telling the truth 100%. Just as Trump predicted that Biden would crash the market, and that Russia would go back to being aggressive. Trump was also right staying Democrats would close down the economy until it broke. And he was right about Dems reversing our good energy policies.

She makes some good points, but the "premise" (if you will) is neo-colonialist in the sense that because she's at the "centre", her views count for more than those of someone at the periphery. In other words, I would like to hear a Hungarian rather than an American talk about Hungary. I have been told by Hungarians that a good opposition candidate could easily have won last Sunday's election but that Peter Marki-Zay (the opposition leader) is a controversial and deeply flawed character who wants Hungary to "get more involved" in arming the Ukrainians, an unpopular stance in Hungary. He also made some rather odd accusations about "many of Orban's government ministers being gay", which Hungarians (rightly or wrongly) understood to be veiled homophobia. Then he accused the Hungarian ethnic community in Ukraine of being "pro-Russian", which most Hungarian voters understood to be an unwarranted attack on the ethnic Hungarians living in the war-torn country, which could actually endanger their lives. Based on what I've heard, it doesn't surprise me that Orbán's Fidesz party got 53 percent of the popular vote (with a turnout of 69 percent).

In Ukraine they no longer have ANY private press at all. They literally have only one allowed news station, and it is run by the government. In fact, Canada is NO BETTER really. They now license journalists, and they will allow no licenses for journalists that criticize Trudeau! So you lost your job if you were working for an independent newspaper if you are un Ukraine or Canada as well. Actually, Hungary still allows independent journalism. It just gets pushed around. Kind of like in Russia. But free speech is taking a hit in the USA as well. But they dont have to resort to strong arm tactics. For one thing, George Soros has used his insane wealth to bribe, bully, and push his opinion of what society can be on Hungary. He has aided people from third world countries into entering the country and affecting the political direction. That is the opposite of democracy. That is basically saying "If you people will not vote for globalism, I will replace you with people who will" The majority of people in the west do not want globalism. They want their government to concentrate on helping them, not foreigners, and they have that right. Its the super wealthy elite and out of touch academics that want this. @@wasdwasdedsf There were sixty court cases by the Trump folks and they all were essentially laughed out of court for lack of evidence--including by judges Trump appointed. His lawyers got in trouble for bringing "frivolous" lawsuits. His own appointee called it the most secure election in American history. Even the rabid pro-Trump group in Arizona, given illegal access to the votes, couldn't find any proof of irregularities and concluded Biden won AZ> There simply is no real evidence of meaningful fraud or irregularities--unless you are listening to claims in extremist echo chambers.
Anne Applebaum also believed that in order to contain Russia, we should isolate them, which we did for years before the Ukrainian crisis broke out. She also believes that democracy is in crisis not because of anything the US did, but because everyone else is less morally virtuous, and they need our help. Despite everything happening around the world, she's doubling down.
I'm with her on that for the most part.
