Though academically recognised for his contributions to international trade theory, he writes about a wide range of economic issues, and is well known for making economic theory accessible to non-academics through his columns and numerous popular books. A liberal, Dr. Krugman is a fierce opponent of the modern Republican party, though he previously served as an economic advisor in Reagan’s White House.

This is yet another situation in which if Democrats were to engage in deficit spending, regardless of motivation, Republicans would go crazy and be vehemently opposed. But of course whenever there is a Republican in the White House, and regardless of motivation, then the Republican congress has no problem whatsoever.
It is very telling to watch this in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, as this appears to be filmed before the virus had reached American shores in large numbers.

Yes, economic planning is the right word. Because that has worked so well in the past. Paul Krugman is a disgrace to his profession and the only one making arguments in bad faith in this Q&A is him. He has a clear political bias and combines and does not in the least bit understand economics outside of his Keynesian believe system. Last year he had to write an article in which he was putting down MMT while trying to talk away the similarities that had been drawn between MMT and the Fed's Keynesian monetary policies. Now, six months later we are at a point were he is advocating for the exact same things MMT proponents have been propagating for decades. His articles for the NYT have always been horrendously bad and wrong but lately he is really outdoing himself. Paul Krugman is an intellectually dishonest and lazy buffoon and it has been a pleasure to watch him be so wrong on inflation while, at the same time, watching my precious metals holdings explode in value, over the past 15 months.

The number one reason for the problems you mentioned are the Keynesian monetary policies of the Fed. Quantitative easing has inflated asset prices and made the asset rich even richer while the middle and low income classes are losing their wealth through inflation and have been locked out of the stock and real estate markets, permanently. Their inflation-adjusted wages have been stagnating while those who own real estate, stocks and fine art are reaping the benefits of inflation. Another factor when it comes to homelessness in Cali are again the very same liberal policies Krugman is advocating for. They are not the result of free market capitalism but the opposite. Democrat regulations and taxations put a lit on supply in a - thanks to the Fed's monetary policies - already overheated real estate market making rents unaffordable for anyone but the elite. Additionally, Democrat's have drawn many homeless people from other states by basically allowing those people to do everything they want there and even supporting their addiction by handing out syringes.
The answer is to end those policies, monetary and fiscal. Taxes and regulations need to be cut and the Fed has to let the market determine rates.
@@ianreynolds8552 I would encourage you to really look into the monetary policies of the past two decades. Look up how big corporations use government regulations such as minimum wage laws to get rid of smaller competitors. Look up how San Fransisco lawmakers contribute to the homelessness problem.

I know that Brits love their reflexive anti-Americanism too much to care about this, but the actual ordinary Americans are isolationist protectionists. They don't want a trade deal. The US engages in the second-lowest level of international trade of any developed country save Japan, a set of literal islands. Historically (pre-1945) the US was THE protectionist country. Barely 7.5 decades of not being that, and it's ending now. Why do you think ordinary Americans have changed from the way they were for their first 160 years?

Economics suffers badly from the fact that it is a science that lacks the protection from the prestige gained from aging, as is the case with physics which results from repeating experimentation every time which emphises the foundations of that science in different, varied, and surprising ways. And all reinforce that science.
The author Walid Ahmed Kamal Al-Hababi, in his book "The Economic Risk Theory" (the Islamic Macroeconomic System), deals with achieving maximum benefit, detailing the new economic system, which is called the "risk" system in which wealth is distributed to everyone, as it is a stable and more efficient system than the system of free market.
In his book "The Theory of Economic Risk" (The Islamic Macroeconomic System), the author believes that the basic idea of this book is to clarify the idea of how to use the principle of time preference in imposing taxes, in order to motivate everyone to invest and raise productivity through tax.
He also touched on the state's duties regarding its implementation and the extent of its participation in the market accurately.
The author spoke of the zakat banks as the state budget, while the state budget remains the most controversial point among policy makers in countries.
At the same time, the writer believes that while economic writings are scarce from a total point of view, there is no writer who spoke about a holistic Islamic economy as a previous system; So this is the only writing, up to the moment.
You cannot change a system by fighting the existing truth, as Muslim economists always do, but to change something, you must create a model that makes the current system an outdated system. furthermore If we know that this system achieves the highest rate of spending in a country without need for other economic resources - without taxes or anything else - thus we can see that we are facing unique writings. Whereas, it lays out clear features for the Islamic economy that distinguish it completely from the socialist and capitalist economies, and not a fabrication to be similar to either of them.
And he affirms that with this system, other systems will not be able to catch up with our economic progress, no matter what efforts are made, except to implement it.
On the other hand, he believes that we will not be able to catch up with the West economically with the current systems, no matter what we try.
Finally, the author asserts, that economics is the only thing that clarifies the purpose of Islamic customs and rituals apart from their devotional meaning in human life. So that it can be proven without doubt that it is indispensable for a person to perform it such as Hajj, Zakat, prayer ... etc.
He also confirms that all of this is found in the book (The Theory of Economic Risk) in this book issued by the House of “Yemeni Books” for printing, publishing and distribution within 305 pages and distributed in three main chapters, that this Islamic macroeconomic system is; He is the one who will bring us the maximum benefit

كما تطرق الى واجبات الدولة بخصوص تطبيقه ومدى اشتراكها في الأسواق بدقه .
وتحدث المؤلف عن أن مصارف الزكاة تعتبر هي موازنة الدولة، فيما تظل موازنة الدولة هي النقطة الاكثر جدلا بين صانعي السياسات في البلدان.
وفي الوقت نفسه يرى الكاتب أنه فيما تندر الكتاباتُ الاقتصاديةِ من ناحيةٍ كلية، ولا يوجد كاتبٌ تحدث عن اقتصادٍ إسلامي كلي كنظام سابقًا؛ وبالتالي فهذه هي الكتابة الوحيدة، حتى اللحظة.
ويضيف لا يمكنك تغيير نظام بمحاربة الحقيقة القائمة، كما يفعل ذلك الاقتصاديون المسلمون دوما ، ولكن لتغيير شيءٍ، يجب عليك وضع نموذج يجعل النظام الحالي نظام عفا عليه الزمان؛ فإذا علمنا أن هذا النظام يحقق أعلا معدل إنفاق في دولة بلا موارد اقتصادية_ دون اللجوء إلى ضرائبٍ، أو غيرها_ فحينها يمكن أن نرى أننا أمام كتاباتٍ فريدةٍ من نوعها؛ حيثُ أنها تضع للاقتصاد الإسلامي ملامحًا واضحةً تميزهُ تمامًا عن الاقتصادين الاشتراكين و الرأسمالين، وليس تلفيقًا ليشابه أحدهما.
ويؤكد أنه بهذا النظام لنْ تتمكن الأنظمةُ الأخرى من اللحاقِ بتقدمنا الاقتصادي مهما بذلت من جهود سوى تطبيقه.
وعلى الجانب الآخر يرى أننا لن نتمكن نحنُ من اللحاق بركب الغرب اقتصاديًا بالنظم الحالية مهما حاولنا.
وأخيرًا يجزم المؤلف، إن الاقتصاد هو الشيء الوحيد الذي يوضح الغرض من العاداتِ والعباداتِ الإسلامية بعيدًا عن معناها التعبدي في حياة الإنسان؛ بحيث يثبت بما لا يدع للشكِ أنه لاغنى للإنسان عن القيام بها من حج، وزكاة، وصلاة... الخ.
كما يؤكد أن كل ذلك نجدهُ في كتاب ( نظريةُ المخاطرةِ الاقتصاديةِ) في هذا الكتاب الصادر عن دار "الكتب اليمنية" للطباعة والنشر والتوزيع ضمن 305 صفحة وموزع على ثلاثة أبواب رئيسية ، أن هذا النظام الاقتصادي الكلي الإسلامي؛ هو الذي سيحققُ لنا المنفعة القصوى..

🐟 22. NON-MONARCHICAL GOVERNANCE:
COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM is intrinsically evil because it reduces individual citizens to utilities, who, in practice, are used to support the ruling elite, who are invariably despotic scoundrels, and very far from ideal leaders (i.e. compassionate and righteous monarchs). Those citizens who display talent in business or the arts are either oppressed or their talents are coercively utilized by the corrupt state. Wealth is literally stolen from the rich. Spiritual teachings are repressed by the irreligious and illegitimate government.
DEMOCRACY is evil because, just as the rabble favoured the murderous Barabbas over the good King Jesus, the ignorant masses will invariably vote for the candidate which promises to fulfil their inane desires, rather than one which will enforce the law and promote a just and wholesome society. Even in the miraculous scenario where the overwhelming majority of the population are holy and righteous citizens, it is still wrong to vote for a seemingly-righteous leader. This is because that leader will not be (by definition) a king. He will not be able to tolerate the fact that the citizens are paying him to perform a job (which is a working-class role) and that an inordinate amount of time, money and resources are being wasted on political campaigning.
The thought of children voting for who will be their parents or teachers, would seem RIDICULOUS to the average person, yet most believe that they are qualified to choose their own ruler. They are most assuredly not. Just as the typical child fails to understand that a piece of sweet, juicy, healthy, delicious fruit is more beneficial to them than a cone of pus-infested, fattening, diabetes-inducing ice-cream, so too can the uneducated proletariat not understand that they are unqualified to choose their own leader, even after it is logically explained to them (as it is in this chapter, as well as the previous chapter). And by “uneducated”, it is meant misguided in the realities of life and in righteous living (“dharma”), not in facts and figures or in technical training.
To put it frankly, democracy is rule by the “lowest common denominator”.
It be obvious that ANARCHY can never ever succeed, because even the smallest possible social unit (the nuclear family) requires a dominator. Any family will fall-apart without a strong male household head. The same paradigm applies to the extended family, which depends on a strong patriarchal figure (the eldest or most senior male). Likewise with clans, tribes, villages, towns, cities, and nations.
Unfortunately, there are many otherwise-intelligent persons who honestly believe that an entire country can smoothly run without a leader. The reason for their distrust of government is due to the corruption of the monarchy in recent centuries, but if anarchists were to understand that most all "kings/queens" in recent centuries were not even close to being true monarchs, they may change their stance on that inane 'system'.
Most of the problems in human society are directly or indirectly attributable to this relatively modern phenomenon (non-monarchies) since it is the government’s role and sacred duty to enforce the law.
One of the many sinister characteristics of democracy, socialism and other evil forms of governance, is the desire for their so-called “leaders” to attempt to control, or at least influence, the personal lives of every single citizen. For example, in the wicked, decadent nations where this holy scripture was composed, The Philippine Islands and The Southland (or Australia, as it is known in the Latin tongue), the DEMONIC governments try, and largely succeed, in controlling the rights of parents to properly raise, discipline and punish their children according to their own morals, compulsory vaccination of infants, enforcing feminist ideology, limiting legitimate powers an employer has over his servants, subsidizing animal agriculture, persecuting religious leaders (even to imprisonment and death, believe it or not), and even trying to influence what people eat and wear. Not that a government shouldn’t control what its citizens wear in public, but it should ensure that they are modestly dressed, which is hardly the case in Australia, the Philippines, and similar nations. At least ninety-nine per cent of Filipinas, for instance, are transvestinal, despite Philippines pretending to be a religious nation.
Basically, the worst of the non-monarchical governments promote (or at least permit) ALL things contrary to God’s perfect and pure will, such as adultery, fornication, prostitution, pornography, homosexuality, gambling (even running lotteries themselves), illegitimate abortion of poor innocent unborn children, irreligion, drug addiction, disrespect for authority, and promoting materialism and ignorance via a powerful network of institutions of miseducation (so-called “schools, colleges and universities”). Their aim is to produce a population of indoctrinated citizens who have been conditioned to serve the state and its perverse agendas.
Even though non-monarchical leaders are committing a criminal act by ordering the persecution of it's citizens or instigating war on another nation, the police and military personnel who execute their orders are equally (if not MORE) guilty of the dirty deeds. Even if a non-monarchical government punishes a criminal, that in itself is a criminal act, because it has no authority to do so. That is akin to a baby punishing its mother for theft, when it is actually the role of the infant's father to enact disciplinary action upon the woman in question.
For the past few centuries, most of the earth has been controlled by a CABAL of men comprising of extremely wealthy businessmen (particularly bankers) and so-called religious leaders. Ironically, some of these elite businessmen instigate a pseudo-socialist government within their nations, so that they themselves can control the financial system for their selfish goals.
This planet is surely doomed, unless the most pernicious institutions ever known to man (democracy, socialism and communism), are replaced by the ONLY legitimate form of government (monarchy - ideally a holy monarch, though even a mediocre king is preferable to being ruled by an elected official or a sociopathic megalomaniac, who could almost never be a righteous ruler).
Let it be known, however - non-monarchical rule can not and will not endure.
The truth shall triumph ("satyam-eva jayate", in Sanskrit).

Air travel emits more CO₂ than other forms of transport. The US is lagging behind in speed rail development and will not catch up because of the nature of US politics and mass media. The fixation on demonising China derailed its economy from crucial issues such as climate change, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. The decline of the US is inevitable.

Since we're on the topic of descriptive ad hominem declarations of mythical beings, does anyone believe that a "Zombie" has the capability to detect when a "Vampire" is attempting to make an argument using false premise narratives? Just asking.
Looking at the positive impact of the 2008 intervention of Treasury bailouts, I become way less ideologue, and supportive of state-actions during moments of crisis. However, Krugman loses me on two things, his childish insults to politicians who disagree with him, (2) his ideologue position against any austerity measures during tough moments. He doesn't seem to be open-minded at all.
Krugman is for austerity as long as the economy is doing well.

He makes some good points, but to say that cutting taxes in order to stimulate business is a "zombie idea" is highly disingenuous. The more you tax productive effort the less productive effort you get. It's obvious the tax intake will not increase past a certain threshold of taxation.

I am not some cheerleader for Krugman - but do think he earned his Nobel with truly innovative contribution for "economic geography." Get Mark Blyth's book "Austerity - the history of a dangerous idea". OK, he's a lib from Brown, but he makes some good points. Personally, I think Trump's uber-Keynesian fiscal stimulus and tax cuts were completely unnecessary, poorly timed, and set us back as we didn't need them. Now he is forced to double down. Thankfully, bond rates are near zero (and going to submerge beneath the waves soon enough) - so not borrowing at negative rates would be, essentially, irresponsible. Is Krugman open minded? I, for instance, have been doing two jobs for 30 years and l still live in poverty. I should not be blamed 100% for my poverty.There are other contributing factors to my situation in which I have no hand at all, like the fact that most of the employers in the US do not offer liveable wages. And the fact that people spend a lot of money on medicine and medical bills and on paying exorbitant rent. And the fact that certain segments of society face discrimination in the job market. So these issues , and many more, are structural problems that need the intervention of society. If we have real human beings in the congress and the white house, something would be done to tackle these problems, therefore giving some hand to the poor people's efforts to climb out of the pit of poverty. But as Im sure you know, our government and congress are completely in the bockets of the rich. And by the way, and contrary to a myth common among white americans, statistics show that 95 % of the poor people in the USA have jobs, and most of the time, two jobs or more.

I also think you concentrate too much on "the rich" and not on your own life and well-being. The rich are not the cause of your or my problems. If anything, most of them (except politicians and crony capitalists) have truly earned their wealth through producing incredible value for other people (e.g. Steve Jobs).
So, to be clear, I do not blame every single person for being poor. There is a very small percent of poor people stricken by poverty for whom I have nothing but genuine sympathy. However, many poor people do make bad choices which keep them stuck in poverty.
Regarding climate change, if you have an open mind, listen to Richard Lindzen, Freeman Dyson, Judith Curry, William Happer, John Christy, or Patrick Moore, to name just a few, and ask yourself whether they sound more like scientists than Michael Mann and Gavin Schmidt.

When Trump was first elected, I was a "denier" bur after studying it for several years, I have concluded CO2 indeed is influencing climate change and we should reduce the use of fuels that increase CO2 in the atmosphere. But that is happening: the US has been reducing emissions by a switch from coal and oil to natural gas. We can further reduce fossil fuel usage by switching much of our electricity generation to nuclear. I live in Arizona and our emissions from our Paloverde nuclear plant are 0. Many of the greenies oppose nuclear power: why? It is our only short term choice that can replace fossil fuel generation in the next 25 years without crippling the economy. We can gradually switch to electric cars, natural gas powered cars (common in Europe) and in a few cases, hydrogen powered long distance trucks. Switch to natural gas is a vast improvement over coal and oil.
So, I did change my mind in the face of scientific evidence. I am credentialed in science and mathematics as an electrical engineer and the scientific evidence is compelling, and I am expert in mathematical modelling of real processes. I can say that models for C02's effect on the climate are directionally correct, but way off in terms of time frame and magnitude.
Most of the people who promote drastic measures to address climate change, know very little about the subject. Journalists are even worse because they do not understand the subject and exaggerate and promote hysteria. It will be better for some countries as the World warms.
Climate change is NOT an imminent disaster. Rather, it is a problem we can address systematically over time WITHOUT destroying the economy. If you oppose nuclear power, you can't be serious about addressing climate change.

And climate is changing due to human contributions. The fight here is on what's the best policies to address it. @@hus390 the measures taken in 2008 were a complete failure. Sure, we had a 12 year bull market because of the QE and bailouts, but the last three years just got wiped out. Trump said in his campaign, the economy is in a bubble and he was correct. It is also true Trump then changed his rhetoric when he became president. Trump then claimed the economy was the "greatest economy in history". Trump changed and became wrong. 08 never fixed the issues, they compounded the issues. We hear, trump economic gains have been eased, next will be Obama's economic gains have been erased. The people like Krugman advised horrible economic policies. And to further my point, all the QE was supposed to be taken out of the economy. The policies were supposed to be temporary. They weren't and now the economy is in free fall. The economy cant even produce mask to healthcare workers and the people. Things are gonna change, but the economic policies of krugman and his ilk are gonna have to collapse first. We are capitalist, not socialist. We should have let AIG fail , we should have let all who weren't prepared go into bankruptcy.
