Considering it is 100% safe to eat expired food if it smells and looks fine those two bags are an absolute bargain. The only issue I see with this is that you can hardly control your diet, but if you are low on money this is great. It also shows how much perfectly edible food is thrown out every single day, very sad.
It seems though that the guys at the supermarket put some thought into what they packed, I think it was rather healthy. And the best 'eat cheap' challenge Taz made was when she got a crate with fruit and veg from Lidl and bought some staples. My friend jokingly called that cheating as as long as you have a solid base of fruit and veg you're good.
You should see how much schools in the UK waste, yet they plaster the papers with lies about how schools lack food for students. Sad. X
True for the most part. Some meat items can be off, but not give obvious signs such as ground beef. But yeah I 100% agree stuff like that pudding, yoghurt, fruit and veg, all that stuff is fairly easy to tell.
People ought to understand "Display Until, Use By, and Best Before" are extremely different though.
Agree. The reaction to yoghurt that is about 3 or even 4 days past the ‘best by’ date shows how much we rely on marketing and basically the con game that is consumerism. I saw someone on tv who threw away veggies that looked perfectly edible because that day was the ‘best by’. 🫣

The Too Good to Go isn't just about selling leftovers anymore. A lot of stores are selling magic bags because it gets customers in. I get Indian food from one place in Manchester, they just give you a random meal with popadoms/naan etc. It's just a smaller portion compared to what you'd get if you purchased full price.
I got pasties from a places and they just let me pick 3 random ones from what they had. They were fresh in the middle of the day, not leftovers.
Starbucks did the same.
It's all about bringing in the cash! 😄

I love sharing those things :) But at my Starbucks I get food that is definitely dry or just edible at that day. Sometimes their food will mould when I try to eat it one day later (out of the fridge). I mean also it doesn't speak for their quality sadly
If its stuff like pastries etc, they keep it out standing and the stuff only has a half hour to an hour 'standing time' after which employees aren't allowed to sell it because its not 'fresh' so that's what it probably is with some of the stuff, especially for fast food places
@@deceaseblade omg I love getting too good to go magic bags from costa! It's either a hot or miss but it's kinda fun to get something different every time. Same with Greggs. Don't get me wrong it's all perfectly fine for consumption but you can get basic stuff like crossaints in your magic bags sometimes
In regards the pizza being freshly made I imagine it was made using ingredients that were close to their use by/best before date. So like the veggies and fish were probably close to being thrown out

It was burnt so it's most likely that someone just didn't want it even though it was freshly made. It's totally fine when you burn things at home but in a restaurant you have a chef who is a professional so you wouldn't expect your food to be burnt.
use by & expiration date are 2 diff things! use by means for resturants & stores expiration dates are when you shouldn’t eat then. :)
@@alexpiperhalliwell Depends, typically if I go to a proper pizza place, and I ain't talking Dominos or any of that nonsense cake pizza stuff (you shouldn't put sugar in pizza lmao), then I expect a little char on pizza, because I expect them to cook it in a proper wood fired oven, not bake it (yet again like a cake) in a perfectly controlled oven made to not cause charring at all. But yeah that pizza did seem a little over done.

You can eat yoghurt like WEEEEEKS after its best before date, so there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of eating a few days after. Especially if it says "best before date" and not "use by" bc that just means its definitely good until there but CAN still be good even longer. And also sometimes food is bad even tho it hasnt expired yet. Yesterday at work I opened a yoghurt that was supposed to be good until september and it had mold in it 😂
Truth, my mother taught me how to make my own yoghurt, it's basically just fermented milk, typically you use a little Greek yoghurt or something similar as a base and add milk then heat it at temperature for a day. Voila, yoghurt, with the assistance of a yoghurt maker ofc.
Usually of shop yoghurt is off like the one she was eating though, it'll taste sort of papery and unpleasant.

Tip: if you keep the bread or buns in the fridge and it’s too hard to bite into a few days after, wrap it up with a wet napkin or paper towel and put it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. It works every time!

@@Bllairy but it’s getting dry and looses its taste. Just buy smaller portions or freeze some of the bread and take it out the night before u need it.
Great tip - I wrap a wet paper towel around leftover pizza before microwaving, makes the crust nice and chewy again.
As a person who's been part of food industry, it's devastating to see amount of food wastage that take place daily(fresh food) mostly in buffet. Knowing there's thousands people dieing due to hunger and still having to waste food is so heartbreaking. The worst part is you are just an intern who can do absolute nothing but follow your senior and watch edible food trun into dump,which is so fking frustrating. Big hotel are the major cause of food wastage.
You know what more sad ,outside the hotel you see people begging for food but inside all the food trun into trash. And you can't to nothing absolute nothing.
Only we can do is hope, someday it change

If I'm not mistaken, countries like France do have laws that makes perfectly edible food leftover be given away or sold at cheap price to reduce food wastage.

Because of my chronic fatigue syndrome I quit my job this year. To give myself some time and rest to hopefully improve my symptoms with help from profesionals.
That means we only have my husbands paycheck every month. With 2 cats, 1 dog, two adults and a 4 year old thats very hard ;)
Thats why we eat from too good to go right now :)
We pick up 1 grocery bag and one fruit and veggie bag a week and with that I make my mealplan for the week.
I only have to shop a little extra because of that and it's very fun also :) because you have to be very creative.

The shop I work at does it and it's insane what you can get
For anyone trying this themselves: if you get something from bakeries, eat it the same day or the day after
There are reasons why it goes in the trash after the day. Mostly because everything is just dry and hard in that case. So, just a reminder for all the people using the app. Eat your bread rolls and pastries fast!
I often put buns in the fridge and bake them when I need them - our bakeries put soooo much buns in the bags xD.

But there's a difference: Expiration dates tell consumers the last day a product is safe to consume. Best before date on the other hand tells you that the food is no longer in its perfect shape from that date.
PLUS - sometimes food is off even if the expiration date is 2-3 days ahead while other stuff can be eaten even a week after.

The buffet reminds me of how some hotels did it in Bergen! Some hotels literally will just let in people who got Too good to go breakfast (or lunch) at the end of their breakfast and lunch buffet times. Wild (and so worth the money omg)

I work for the coop and make up the too good to go bags and ALWAYS try to put enough to A) make it up to between £10-£13 and B) make sure there's a meal that can be made up from the base ingredients. I love the app so much and especially with the cost of living in the UK they're a lifesaver for so many people.

TGTG is brilliant! We have a local supermarket that does magic bags for TGTG and we've had all sorts of stuff from Chinese style chicken and fillet steak to yogurts and potatoes. Some of the things can be a bit hit and miss though, although one restaurant that I had a bag from pre-pandemic was great because they gave me a takeaway box and I could stuff it as full as I could and I got to pick what I wanted to put in it (it's a buffet restaurant and as it was near the end of the night they'd sold out of a lot of the things but I still managed to get a decent sized portion). I agree that anyone that has this service at any of the shops near where they live (or can travel easily) should give it a go at least once. One place that is featured regularly on ours sells catering size packs of stuff and have vegan/veggie/non veggie stuff and ice cream - catering pack sized tubs of Ben & Jerry's - you can't go wrong with that can you? Plus, some of the things you get can easily be put into the freezer to use at a later date. Saves on food waste and means people can afford to eat which is becoming all the more necessary, given the current economic climate.

Handy tip for slightly old pastries, pop it in the microwave for a few seconds. Makes it nice and soft (5 days might be unsalvagable)
After 5 days we dunk it in coffee and call it biscotti!😁

I live in Denmark where 2good2go was founded. I never use it because I have dietary restrictions, but here we have many places that sell left over veggies for a fraction of the price as well. It's usually prepacked box, but some places let you chose. Basically, supermarkets give them veggies that are not good enough for sale but not bad at all, and they sell it for about 3£ box/shopping bag, usually on Saturday. And it's run by volunteers.
I use that a lot, because it's not just saving money, which is a plus of course, but it's helping with food waste and environment as well. The trick is to plan your meal around what you get, and to cook and freeze it before it goes off, so you don't waste it once you get it.
We actually have an "in and out" store where we are. They sell foods and drinks that are past their sell by date but are still good to eat. You can buy loads of stuff at low discounted prices. It amazes me how much you can still eat out of date. It's handy when you need stuff on a budget though milk etc is still best bought fresh if you can (unless you get UHT milk which is milk that lasts forever until its opened and can be stored in the cupboard). Xx

We have that app here in Sweden but there is barely any discount on the food and the food you get is not that great. But I like the idea of the app. And I think it is good that you keep making videos with this app. We need to take care of our planet and not waste resources.
I wish they had this in Canada. For the most part, I try to shop discounted foods at the grocery store; the “enjoy today” type of food. But this would make it much easier if they curated a bag for me to grab and go at the grocery store.

at least here in Finland they sometimes mess up the pizza orders and make wrong pizza with wrong toppings so they sell it lower price in food rescue apps ☺️

Sell buy dates do not mean expired or gone bad! Any food is usually fine for at least 3 days, longer depending on type, or if frozen immediately at least 3 months.
I would give every day a 10/10. You got lots of food. Thats a win!! In my area there are NO SHOPS on the too good to go app!
