  • We are working on finding a mouthpiece to match with a trombone project we have been working on (more info to come!) and were intrigued by the differences between the Schilke 50 and Schilke 51 on the large bore tenor in question; what better way to compare then with a video! We think we have our preference but would love to know what you think!

I purchased a Schilke 51 because it allows me to play the upper register up to F above high C with great ease. It also eliminated a growl between low Bb and low E. Seems to be similar to a Bach 5G or Denis Wick 5abl rim with a larger cup. It worked like magic for me.

51 has a darker sound but 50 has a better projection(?) in my opinion. I definitely prefer the sound of 51

Shilke in general definitely sounds the best on you in my opinion. It sounds a bit darker.

Bass trombonist here, who doubles very rarely on large bore tenor.
    1) Both have good core.
    2) That core covers well on the 51 when played soft, without losing definition. The 50 stay, to my taste, too "present", bright, even a bit overbearing for the dynamic.
    3) Loud passages show the biggest difference. The 51 broadens nicely and doesn't lose control when dynamically pushed. The 50 kind of loses it when pushed, gets splatty instead of powerful. Being primarily a bass trombone player, I go for body, breadth and weight over brightness and aggressiveness in "classical" playing.
That being said, with no regard to your preferences, neother tonally nor feel-on-face, I'd tonally go the direction of the 51. But then I normally play either a Wedge 4G or a Hammond 11L, both of which are even larger, rounder in sound, than the 51. I did, for a short time play a Shilke 52E2, but didn't get along with the rim contour.

Two mouthpieces I use almost exclusively. I like the 50 with my smaller bore horns and feel it produces a brighter tone. I like the 51 with my large tenor and euphonium because it has that more open darker sound. On occasion, I also will use a 52.

I agree with what looks like the majority.....51 over the 50. Enjoy all of your videos.

They actually both sound very nice to me! I honestly would need input from a few other sources to hear what they had to say about them. Other than that, I'd buy both! 😅

I prefer the 51 the articulations in the faster passages seem to get a bit clumsy on the 50

I have played on a Schilke 51 since college. I'm a retired band director and while I don't do any serious playing, I pick up my trombone almost daily and play it a bit. Would like to get a new mouthpiece and wondering if I should stick with the 51. I feel I don't have a lot of endurance (playing for an extended amount of time before my lip feels dead). Wondering if different model would feel better for longer sessions of playing?

Hello Keith nice video, I think the 50 sounds best with that horn and do you also think you could review the Yamaha Alain Trudel, and Nils Landren Signature Mouthpieces?

    52D the best

  • @vidyuthguruvayurappan9689

The 51 has a more open darker sound and was consistent throughout. The 50 is much brighter and has better projection but is not as versatile. The 51 is much better overall.

La 51 suena mas gordo y con mas cuerpo, me encanta ese sonido... compraré la Schilke 51 para mí caño delgado

I'm going against the grain here, I like the sound on the 50 a little better - for my ear it let the horn ring and feel a little bit warmer. Might be interesting to repeat the same trial on a Bach 42 or whatever your day to day horn is, just to sort out which elements of the sound are mouthpiece, and which are instrument.

Novice question. Do Schilke get larger with smaller number like a Bach ? 51 is smaller than the 50?

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop
      @SchmittMusicTromboneShop  Před 2 lety +2

Schilke numbering is the opposite of Bach; the larger the number, the larger the mouthpiece. The 50 is around a 6 1/2 (25.4mm) while the 51 is a 5G equivalent (25.5mm)…

My 51 is the most comfortable mpc in the world - only problem is that the sound (for me) is brighter, and has less of a resonant quality than my DW 5AL, and my lower end is really not at all good. Much better on the Wick. I can play forever on the 51 and I can play up into D and Eb without a lot of effort, whereas on the Wick I really have to work, but the sound doesn't compare well (my sound, on my Shires tenor - I would never make generalizations to other players). You sound good on whatever you play, which of course pisses me off to no end.
