  • We decided to purchase the best dog carrier around so we could safely travel in our new Subaru Outback with Skye, our Norwegian Elkhound. We looked around online for the best dog carrier, and the Gunner Kennel seemed to be the perfect solution. Using the Sizing Guide on the gunner.com website, the G1 Medium was the best fit for Skye. I ordered the G1 Medium kennel, and a couple of accessories including a Tie-down Strap Kit and an Orthopedic Dog Bed. Two weeks later, a single box containing the G1 Kennel and accessories arrived in front of our garage door.
    The total cost: $927.57
    G1™ KENNEL: $600.00
    TIE-DOWN STRAP KIT: $110.00
    PERFORMANCE PAD: $90.00
    Subtotal: $800.00
    UPS Ground: $54.11
    Sales tax: $73.46
    TOTAL: $927.57
    Background:
In 2023, Diane and I will be celebrating our 50th anniversary! So, we decided to make this year special, first by purchasing a new 2023 Subaru Outback (our 2011 Outback has more than 180,000 miles), and by planning several trips to locations that were significant milestones during our early relationship and marriage.

Love this video! I too have an Elkhound ( I think she is half sister to your Skye) And I want to get a Gunner for her to travel in. How is Skye doing in this? Does the size still seem to work okay? My Maggie girl is at 43.8Lbs right now and will be a year old on 2-20. Love the videos!

Skye does not hesitate to get inside this medium Gunner Kennel. Recently, we went on a 300 mile round trip, 150 miles in two days, during which Skye rode inside the kennel for over two hours, no complaints. That said, we were concerned that the medium kennel was a bit small and even looked into exchanging it for the next size up, but after speaking with a representative at Gunner Kennel who confirmed that this is the best size for her, we decided not to. They will accept a return within 30 days with a $30 restocking fee. You certainly can’t go wrong buying a Gunner Kennel for your Elkhound. Thanks for your comment and compliment!

Thank you for this video! Out of curiosity how much does your dog weigh? Looking to get a similar one for my dog that is 50lbs.

Definitely use the Sizing Guide on the gunner.com website. If your dog is at its full size and weight, this guide should be accurate. But for our dog, at age 15 weeks and weighing 43lbs, turns out the G1 Medium is a little tight. Skye has a difficult time standing up and turning around to exit the kennel. Her old kennel is the perfect size, but no where near as safe. Thanks for watching and your comment! Good luck!

Hip dysplasia? 😟 How old is Skye, when was that diagnosed?

At five months, we noticed that Skye was moving her back legs together when walking instead of stepping one before the other, and walking slightly sideways. Then when she ran, she would bunny hop. During Skye’s 8-month exam, we asked the vet to check her for hip dysplasia. The vet took an X-ray and it showed both hips had significant dysplasia. Needless to say, we were devastated! The vet put Skye on a supplement, which we give to her daily, and we make sue she gets LOTS of daily exercise to build up her leg muscles. But, we try to limit her jumping from heights. Skye has done very well, overcoming any noticeable challenges from her condition. She runs fast and plays with all dogs, even those three times her size. We couldn’t be happier! Thank you for your question and for watching!

Glad to hear her quality of life hasn't been adversely impacted.
      Have you informed the breeder?

Yes, I informed the breeder, a young man who had recently taken over the Elkhound breeding business in Colorado from his father. He felt so bad that he refunded us $150 (10%) even though I told him that wasn't necessary. Then he did some research and recorded some audio for me to potentially use in a video about hip dysplasia in Norwegian Elkhounds, which I decided not to make. He said that in the many years his family had breed Elkhounds, none of their customers had reported that their puppies had hip dysplasia. Thank you for your interest.
