    Let’s fix the news. Together
On 28 August 2020, Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving Prime Minister and one of the most powerful in Japan's entire democratic period, announced his early resignation. It’s the end of an era.
During his time, Shinzo Abe has led a huge economic and political transformation in the country. Unfortunately, his results have been undone by the coronavirus.
However, his greatest disappointment and political failure have been the failure to get Japan to abandon the basic policy of pacifism that the constitution establishes. Nor has he succeeded in preparing the country to face the growing threat posed by countries like North Korea or China.
Do you want to know more about Shinzo Abe's achievements and failures? Do you want to know more about the threats The Land of the Rising Sun is facing? Don't miss this VisualPolitik video.

Joe Biden talked that "we wrote the Japanese constitution so they(Japan) could not own a nuclear weapon" in a cheering speech to Hillary Clinton on August 15, 2016 in Scranton, eastern Pennsylvania. This means that he understands that it was the United States that created the constitution that would not allow Japan to have an army.
The Democratic Party of the United States must do its utmost to protect Japan against attacks from North Korea.

      hello, 115islands Compass
Are you a Joe Biden supporter?
His remarks made a strong impression on the Japanese. He made an easy statement.
If the Democratic Party wins in the next election, this article will be meaningless.
However, many people in Japan expect Trump to win, and I think so too.
The United States has told NATO members to raise defense spending. Trump had especially blamed Germany. But NATO hasn't reached the desired amount yet.
If Japan tries to significantly increase defense costs, not only China but South Korea will make a fuss. South Korea misunderstands that Japan is aiming for South Korea, so they are very opposed to Japan's military expansion. If that happens, South Korea may be on the Chinese side.
I hope that Japan will increase military spending to obtain the excellent technology and defense capabilities of the United States, and human resources education that have meaningful defense cooperation for Japan.
However, it has been opposed so far by elderly born after the war and educated by the American GHQ. There are many elderly in Japan.

Appreciate the channel, but have to thumbs down this video for it's unfortunate gross oversimplification of the issues. You cite the fact a vast majority of Japanese support upholding Article 9 of their constitution, but expend zero effort exploring why, nor the realistic implications. What you describe as a "failure" could also be described as the majority of Japanese successfully upholding a strategic principle of peace and prosperity. While countries invest hundreds of billions in military globally, we fortunately see the reality of contemporary warfare not required to actively use the massive arsenals of nuclear weapons & other deterrents. That a country like Japan has been able to see it's success in part by reallocating what would have been spent on "deterrent military" instead in direct public goods like healthcare and education has been a boon to its society. Yes, arguments can obviously be made against this, but the big picture is complicated and many factors need to be considered. To over simplify the current situation as "failure" while completely ignoring why ~70% of Japanese continue to support the approach is below the quality I typically expect from this channel. Hope any follow-up videos on the topic can make up for some of the superficial coverage in this initial report.

    • @splizzex
      @splizzex Před 4 lety +3

It is a failure military speaking.
There are two major ways to achieve peace: Through strong defense or through deterrence.
He scrapped the missile defense system. If this trend continues japan may soon be left without capable defense systems to defend itself against threats.
His attempt at achieving peace the aggressive way can't go through because of the constitution.
So now militarily speaking the country is left with an inability to achieve peace through deterrence because of the constitution. And the country may soon be left with an inability to achieve peace through a strong defense system if the current trend continues. Both options of achieving peace look grim and possibly unachievable.
What else can you call this but a failure? Honest question, I want you to explain this to me.

      Interesting take.

    • @anuzis
      @anuzis Před 4 lety +2

@@splizzex Appreciate the thoughtful reply. In effort to answer your question: Japan's military allies (including the US) are committed to counterstrike any offending country as part of protecting any member of the alliance. This was Japan's primary military deterrent that has been effective for the last several decades: If you don't want to bring the wrath of the US military and European allies, don't attack Japan (or Guam, or any ally or territory). This means of deterrent was sufficiently effective decades ago following WWII when Japan had zero effective defense of its own, and one could argue it's similarly effective today.
With respect to missile defense systems specifically (according to publicly available information): these systems are largely considered inadequate anyway, even the US's systems covering its own territory. The current measures to bypass missile defense (e.g. an attack by Russia with hundreds of legit nuclear warheads and thousands of indistinguishably similar non-nuclear warheads) are generally considered able to overwhelm even the most advanced missile defense systems currently available. This is part of why nuclear armed countries retain a stance resembling Mutually Assured Destruction (If you destroy us, we can't stop you, but can destroy you too).
Are there merits to having missile defense systems in Japan to increase the chances of being able to shoot down a 1-off or smaller arsenal from a country like North Korea? Sure. If you were North Korea, would you feel like you could get away with attacking a US ally without repercussion because the area you attacked didn't have a missile defense system? Probably not.
Unfortunately, the bigger picture situation goes way beyond Japan's missile defense capabilities, and is a lot more F'd up than it should be. If interested in learning more, I highly recommend the recent podcast "The Logic of Doomsday" where Sam Harris interviews William J. Perry (served as strategic nuclear systems operations under multiple former US presidents). It's available on CZcams or samharris.org episode 210.

I agree with Splizzex. You’re ignoring their neighborhood. There’s North Korea and China. China, who been steadily building up their military for decades. The Chinese still carry a very heavy grudge for the atrocities of WW2. And the CCP is more that happy to abuse those feelings. What’s more, the US government/military now considers China a greater threat than Russia. If Japan wants to continue to exist in the future, they need to re-think their approach to their military.

@Satryadhamma Putra It would be a large shift in the power dynamic. But I wouldn't say Japan was a "goner". Taiwan would be under the largest threat given china's political goals. But if the small countries of Asia are willing to put up a fight there are always limits to power projection. After all, the US is far more militarily power than both Afghanistan and Vietnam, but it failed to accomplish its long term political goals in both countries. If too many locals are willing to fight-to-the-death then it can become impossible to exert sizable external influence.

The real failures in Japan remain an inability to value human life, except to the extent it serves the machinery. So the birthrate drops, old people die alone and ridiculous notions like blood type justify cruelty and prejudice. I am not picking on Japan. These are exactly the problems China, Russia, England, the USA and all industrialized nations have. The real failure? We can't break the repetition cycle of work and death.

According to the Tokyo Tribunal, Japan's war of aggression on China began with the Manchurian Incident.
This was because China was on the victorious side.
The Lytton Report has pointed out the illegal activities of the Kwantung Army, but it has not been pointed out as an aggression.
However, in the Tokyo Tribunal, the facts that were inconvenient for the victorious nation were ignored, and the Lytton Report was also silently killed.
In the first place, Manchuria was a remote area outside the Great Wall of China when viewed from the center of China, and it was a lawless area with little awareness as a territory.
・ Soviet troops stationed in Manchuria and intimidated the Korean Peninsula
・ The Soviet army that had moved south was conducting the Russo-Japanese War with the Japanese army in Manchuria.
The above also seems to have been deliberately ignored.
It was not taken into account that the people living in the South Manchuria Railway and its affiliates, which Japan acquired from Russia after the Russo-Japanese War, were always at risk of robbery of warlords in the anarchy of Manchuria.
It seems that these were to replace the "Kwantung Army's self-defense war" with "Japan's invasion of Manchuria."
The case of Liutiaohu, which is said to have been a self-made performance by the Kwantung Army, was not correct.
However, the assaults and looting of Manchus and Japanese in Manchuria before that were not correct because they were done by outlaws in the area.
Manchuria was built by the Qing’s last Emperor Puyi from the Manchu people after Japan wiped out the predators.
He testified at the Tokyo Tribunal that he was the puppet king of Japan.
But it was not true. The reason why he lied was that Manchuria was under Soviet control at the time.
It was true that Japan had a great military and economic influence over Manchuria, but it was also true that the Manchurian government controlled Manchuria.
If Manchuria is considered to have been a colony invaded by Japan, then Japan today is also considered to be a colony invaded by the United States.
This is a complete violation of the Potsdam Declaration by the United States.

Yes Japan must do a better job at teaching their own history but South Korea should also stop to point the finger. Every county in this world have a dark side where another country is resentful against them.
Poeple focus on the WW2 because it's recent history and there was video and records to show the atrocities, and some Poeple are still alive.
      But what about older history?
Mongolia and China invaded South Korea and ruled it longer than Japan did. Yes it was a long time ago but if there was camera and video from that period maybe Koreans would be resentful against Chinese and Mongolians.
I don't try to justify atrocities committed by the imperial army in the WW2. What I'm trying to say is that people always only remember the atrocities that were committed recently against their countries or the ones that lasted for a very long time like slavery or that were insanely atrocious like the Shoah.
South Korea committed atrocities in Vietnam for example and i don't really hear Vietnamese people saying all the time that Koreans should apologize.
I know that some Korean officials go to Vietnam for some kind of ceremonial but I'm not sure.
Just to say that every country evolve and an aggressor 70-80 years ago ( Japan, Germany, Italy) can be a peaceful country nowadays.
China and North Korea on the other hand were victims in WW2 but now looks like the aggressors ready to go to war and pushing for changing the status quo, and being super agressive with their neighbors.

I feel like I have to give this video a thumbs down for what I would see to be either over simplification of the video, or the lack of any prior research. That mainly in regards of the Article 9 and the military situation of Japan has been poorly written and downplays Japan's position and its local cultural perspective.
It's down to its people's mindset of pacifism and its already adequate military relative to its geographical features. Japan doesn't expect conventional warfare to knock on its door, but rather urban warfare, their latest developments and acquisitions mirror this.

I feel we should support Japan as an ally and Japan not buying the current missile defense system is not
    a major issue.
On the other hand, Donald trump's job in part is to promote American products, be it missiles or hogs and corn.

The annualized GDP contraction does not describe actual contraction. It's a methodology fluke (US way of annualizing gdp changes needs to be recalculated for Europe), where a bad quarter (quarantine etc) gets multiplied, as if it were a year... Which won't be probably such a bad case. Or am I seeing something wrongly?

  • @theknight4317

9:37 They did not yet amend it, but they reinterpreted it. Now Japan can use its forces outside of its borders.
In addition, it should be remembered that laws in politics are very flexible, therefore countries can easily go around them if they have to.
Thus in 2011, Japan opened its first overseas military base in Djibouti. They also were increasing military expenditure ever since 2012 and invested a huge amount of money into the air-defence in 2018.
I'm not even mentioning the experience that the Japanese had - they have been a strong naval power ever since uniting in the 1860s.
