Part 1: • Aries Spears on Katt W...
    --------
Comedian Aries Spears and Vlad discussed the recent closure of an In-N-Out location in Oakland due to a surge in crime. Vlad expressed his disappointment about the situation, mentioning that he used to live in Oakland. The conversation took a humorous turn as they compared the fast-food chain to other burger joints. Both concluded that Five Guys was rapidly gaining popularity. Nevertheless, the focus remained on the reasons behind the In-N-Out closure. Reflecting on the growing issues of theft and looting in the area, Spears jokingly suggested stores should have automated locks and release pit bulls for security. Discussing potential solutions, they criticized the police's lack of action and the hardships faced by business owners. Despite the light-hearted banter, the interview underscored the serious issue of rising crime rates affecting local businesses.

This has been going on for years in California. I saw the exact same thing happen at a Target in San Francisco in 2017. A guy walked in the store, walked around picking out the clothes he wanted, including sunglasses, grabbed a few snacks and headed for the door. The manager got between him and the door and tried to talk him out of taking the stuff. He walked around her and out the door. She told another customer there was nothing she could do and the police wouldn't do anything.

      CALIFORNIA’S REPUBLICAN COUNTIES HAVE
WORSE CRIME TRENDS AND HIGHER VIOLENT
      CRIME RATES THAN DEMOCRATIC COUNTIES
Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice
Mike Males, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow
California, like the rest of the country, suffered a major increase in homicide in 2020. This disturbing development has prompted calls by Republicans and some Democrats to roll back criminal justice reforms and reinstate tougher arrest and imprisonment policies (see Cassidy, 2021; Korte, 2021). These “get-tough” campaigns ignore a number of important realities, led by the fact that areas with high rates of arrest, prosecution, and incarceration appear to be suffering more, not less, crime.
      • Despite a substantial one-year increase in homicide, overall crime is at historic lows.
Even after 2020’s homicide increase is included, California has experienced massive reductions in crime, especially homicide, over the last 25 to 30 years.
From 1990 through 2020, the state’s homicide rate fell by 53 percent, violent crime was down 58 percent, and property crime fell 62 percent (DOF, 2021; DOJ, 2021).
Crime rate declines persisted as California implemented major criminal justice reforms during the 2010s, including Proposition 47, which reduced lower-level drug and property offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, and Proposition 64, which legalized marijuana (Prop 47, 2014; Prop 64, 2016).
Recent criminal justice reforms have reduced the number of adults in jail and prison by 40,000, and juvenile detention and confinement numbers have fallen from over 20,000 to under 4,000 since the mid-1990s (BSCC, 2021; CDCR, 2020; see also CJCJ, 2019).
In 2020, property crime and violent crime, including homicide, stood at or near their lowest levels in more than half a century (DOJ, 2020).
      • Republican-voting counties arrest and imprison people at higher rates than Democratic-voting counties.
Around two dozen California counties largely have resisted reforms and maintain high incarceration and arrest rates, particularly for drug and other nonviolent offenses.
The clearest difference between areas that have cut crime substantially and those suffering the worst crime trends and rates is not geographic nor demographic, but how they vote - Republican versus Democratic
Homicides are 28 Percent Higher in Republican-voting counties
White people in Republican areas have homicides on rate with People of Color in Democratic ones

Businesses exist to make a profit. While they might be able to recover some of the money from stolen merchandise through insurance claims, eventually a business will not want to continue losing money to rising insurance premiums, property damage, a rising cost of loss prevention, etc. Businesses lose a LOT. And many of the big store chains that come to high crime/low income areas do so at a moderate/high risk and have to be heavily incentivised to be there and stay there.

I lived in Oakland for many years and that whole area near the airport has been bad for a long time. It's disappointing that even an In n Out has to close over it since those are inherently profitable and nonstop busy. I still feel like crime is exaggerated to perpetuate a political narrative, and people cite SF and what have you as a prime example when they're citing areas like the Tenderloin or SoMa which have always been impoverished with lots of drugs and homelessness. Everyday life in most parts of these cities is not really what they portray much different than most major cities.

Our community faces significant challenges. Often, we're quick to criticize each other, which doesn't help our situation. We're living in a society where prejudice, discrimination, and violence against us are widespread, coming from many directions. The struggles of the Black community, including systemic racism, police brutality, and economic inequality, are well-known and continue to affect us deeply. Despite these challenges, our community is known for its resilience and capacity for forgiveness, a trait that has historical roots but also leaves us vulnerable to further harm and exploitation.
Our leaders frequently call for peace and understanding, even when we're wronged. This generosity of spirit is not always met with fairness, as we often receive far less than we give, both materially and in terms of respect. Black culture has had a profound impact on global pop culture, influencing music, dance, fashion, and language. This cultural richness is widely celebrated, yet it's also exploited, with others benefiting from our creativity and innovation more than we do ourselves.
When Colin Kaepernick protested to draw attention to these injustices, the response was mixed, with some criticizing him rather than understanding the message behind his actions. This situation highlights a broader issue: the need for us to look deeper and understand the root causes of the challenges we face. By doing so, we can gain a better understanding of our community's history, our current struggles, and our potential for greatness.
Thank you for taking the time to consider these points.

Sorry but no. The way we improve our communities is by holding and criticizing those that make us look bad. So if you see your kind acting out, call them out on it. Not because you’re self-hating, but because you love your community enough to expect it to be better.

Considered them... And then dismissed them. Your statement is false. Black people's issues are self inflicted. There was a time where white supremacy and systemic oppression to blacks was real. This is no longer the case. The numbers don't bear it out. Your view is outdated. Your view is reinforced by the media you seek. The company you keep. And the bubble you choose to live in.
