I understand why Vlad keeps bringing up Taraji and Aries initial comment proves why that is: black people don't like to talk or think about the concept of risk, when it comes to business ownership. You could see how Aries dismissed the movie's loss at the box office, and then started talking about "We need to own ABC", but when you own, you have to eat the losses directly.
Here's how much was lost on this Color Purple Project:
1. The basic math in Hollywood, is a movie has to do 2.5x it's budget before it breaks even, globally. So in order for Color Purple to have broken even, the film would have needed to make $250 million at the box office.
2. The movie has made $60 million at the box office: That's a $190 million lost!!!
As an employee, you don't have to worry about that or give af about it; if you're an owner, that's on you. When we think of "Business" we only think of the PROFITS and POWER, we don't think "RISKS", because risks makes you understand that SUCCESS isn't guaranteed, and you have to work extra hard to achieve it, because there's a big cost for not doing so. And despite all of that, even the best run businesses with the smartest people, still often get it wrong.

Wanting to be paid fairly is wanting to be compensated fairly. It does not make you a slave. That is stupidity. There is an entire workforce of people who are factually underpaid along racial AND gender lines. EVERYONE is not going to be an owner. And everyone has the right to advocate for themselves to be paid according to their stature, experience, accomplishments, etc. For those who have the necessary skill set, the vision, and the opportunity, becoming an owner is also always an option.

I think Vlad is missing the point. Taraji has been in the game along time and has a excellent work ethic. But let me ask this question. Why does a woman of color have to jump through 5 more hoops while her white counterparts give 5 times as much and are often times only half as talented? I've worked on several productions and the cast/crew all drove themselves. Sometimes their own car, sometimes a rental. Transportation while on set is handled through shuttles. ATL traffic sounds like a nightmare, but this isn't some egregious slight of the talent. Just like your salary you can negotiate your perks BEFOREHAND. A listers pull crazy power moves with trailers, chefs, craft services, etc.

1/ When people invest a _large_ quantity of money in a movie, they want returns. Otherwise that same money could have been invested in something else and yielded returns at much less risk.
2/ A movie making more over a period of time means squat to the current shareholders and executives who change constantly. Sometimes entire companies get sold off. They take the financial loss while someone else makes the return, and that's if they don't suffer from the debt.
3/ The theaters and distributors get half _now,_ not 10 or 30 years from now. All the bills need to be paid _now._

Not everyone who is unhappy with their craft should be told to transfer to some other aspect of it. She is an actress. What if she doesn't like producing or writing? If she doesn't have a passion for those other things she shouldn't be expected to cross over to them. The point is, that she has a right to expect and demand fair compensation for her talent. Production companies leverage the fact that they have several options to force certain people to take low ball offers.
Furthermore, these entertainment production companies are making investments. Any investor understands the possibility of loss. That does not relieve them of giving entertainers fair compensation according to their status, draw, resume, etc. It's their responsibility.

Depends on the kind of budget 1031 requires that you spend a certain amount by a certain date in the year based off of your pre-planned budget if you don't meet the threshold you don't get the tax status or deductions
