This was one of the coolest places I've ever explored in New England: Freedley Quarry in Dorset, Vermont! This is an abandoned marble quarry located deep in the Green Mountains, but, strangely enough, it was not mined the way most quarries are. Rather than mining downwards, Freedley Quarry was excavated into the eastern slope of Mount Aeolus, created a large cavern deep in the mountain. Freedley Quarry originally got its start in 1808 as a marble quarry (marble mining was very lucrative in Dorset in the late 1700s) and quickly became one of the defining sources of marble in the east coast, with many major cities using Dorset marble for their construction projects. The quarry was eventually abandoned in the early 1900s, and today, sits dormant in the middle of the woods as a reminder of times past.
I absolutely adored visiting Freedley Quarry. While I have been to several abandoned quarries before, this was by far the most unique one I've explored, primarily because it was dug sideways into a mountain rather than vertically into the ground. Thus, it creates a massive man-made cavern with several dark passages that you can walk through. There is even a large pond in the middle of the cave that freezes over in the winter and becomes a makeshift ice skating rink. While this video captures the beauty and grandiosity of Freedley Quarry, I implore viewers to go and check this out in person! It's only a 1.25 mile hike up from parking. Below a particular depth the grounds temp stabilizes at around 53-58° F.
This is why many ancient civilizations lived underground in caves.

My husband and i just got back from hiking there. Great video. The car seats were not there, the graffiti was, though. When we drove there, our GPS took us to a driveway before the trail to the quarry. There was a sign saying the quarry is on Rt 30. That sent us back to Dorset Quarry. IGNORE THAT SIGN. Keep going straight on Dorset Hill Rd (from Morse Hill Rd) Lt6 will be on the left.
