Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. I am from the Czech Republic and I am so glad there is finally an internetional film about it. As one of the biggest parts of our history it deserves a recognition. Their pronunciation wasn't perfect but it was kind of funny...I mean, Czech language is very difficult.

Pardon my ignorance here, but don't Brits live in Britain? I thought "Britain" and "UK" were slightly different things, with NI being part of one, but not the other. Some people from Northern Ireland call themselves British?
Nazis actually burned down, erased and slaughtered two villages - Lidice and Ležáky. Third village that was supposed to be burned down, was saved by Czech protectorate police, secretly helping the resistance.
I heard about Lidice. There were stamps launched to commemorate it.

Operation Anthropoid was not ordered or orchestrated by the British. It was conceived and planned 100% by the Czech government in exile. The British aided in training the parachutists for the type of mission being planned and transporting them as well as providing equipment etc. but the target was deliberately kept from them and everyone else outside of a handful of Czechs. President Edvard Benes wanted the operation to appear to be the work of the resistance in Prague to show the allies that the Czech people were prepared to fight. His plan worked and after the assassination and subsequent reprisals the Allies formally recognized the Czech government in exile and nullified the Munich agreement. A great book to read on this subject is The Killing of Reinhard Heydrich: The SS 'Butcher of Prague' By Callum MacDonald

I think most other talk shows outside of Oliver, and Sam Bee would be worried having such a long silence from the audience when the discussion gets serious. Colbert jumps in with the laugh after a time, but I feel like many others would have forced it earlier, and I'm glad he doesn't.
Agreed. Colbert seems to give his audience more credit than the average late night talk show.

I follow the show mainly to get a good laugh at American politics. So this piece really surprised me - serious stuff, history, and Europe. Although the information about the Protectorate and the foreign Resistance is not accurate, I appreciate Anthropoid being talked about in the show. Thank you. We need to be reminded of our heroes (our = Czech and Slovak); it is a natural thing in USA, but not in here.
My family were from Bratislava. Our history still hasn't been written by us, mostly by Western Europe. We need to change that.
Well that is not true, you just do not read and watch books, movies and documentaries made by czechs and slovaks. It is usually not available elsewhere. But that's quite normal for small countries. (Think of for example Dutch, Danish, Finns. How many heroic stories made by them do you know?)
When I was a in Prague last summer, our Czech guide took us on the "Anthropoid" tour. We went to the church where it ended. The pamphlet they handed out didn't mention the movie, just the fact that it happened. Our guide was surprised that I had even heard about this. He said that even Czechs did not know about this moment in history, as their WWII history was dictated by the Soviet Union -- WE saved you, WE gave you your freedom, etc -- not giving any credit to any other country for the outcome of WWII. According to the guide, this incident was unknown until the 1980s. Beautiful church. Sad movie. Horrific outcome. I'm loving history more the older I get. I believe it's important to know the past. Didn't see enough of the Czech Republic and would love to go back.

I’ve told all my friends about this movie. I take classes at a local university for senior citizens - I’m 72. I was taking a class on WW II, and I told the class about Anthropid and passed around the brochure The discussion then centered on all we Americans DON’T know about that war. My dad was in the European theater but mostly in Belgium and France - went over after D Day and was there for the Battle of the Bulge. But he never talked about his experiences. It wasn’t until after he died that we knew about his movements. I think most American men were like that.
I’m getting my wish though, I’m going back to Praha next May (why do we call it Prague?)

There were so many heroes in WW2, many of their stories may never be heard :( It is good for our current generation to learn of how terrible life was for previous generations and how fortunate we are to live in this era, but we must learn from the previous mistakes of prior governments and rulers and do more to stop tyranny and war throughout the world! Too many children grow up living in fear and at risk of death or injury because of some people's doctrines of fear & hate!

ikr i just watched anthropoid and it reminded me of a few months ago where in history lesson i learnt about the munich agreement and how the allies gave czech to hilter and this actually made me realise how sad it was for the czech ppl too
Love him. Missed him since S1 of Once Upon A Time, made me so mad. Loved his work in The Fall though. No idea why he did 50 Shades, he's so much better than that. This part of the interview was serious but he definitely did his research and I felt like I learned something. Sounds like it might be a good movie!

Two things not mentioned in this clip. Britain had a measure of guilt about Czechoslovakia. British PM Neville Chamberlain wrote off the country in 1938 when he agreed to allow Hitler to take over Czechoslovakia's fortified border area known as the Sudetenland. His comments at the time made it very clear that he didn't think the people of that country were worth British blood.
The second thing is that towns and parts of towns all over the world were renamed Lidice so that it would live on. The communist regime in Czechoslovakia built another town of that name adjacent to it.
Many French & Brits and many others did pay with their lives because of Chamberlain's mistake.
First, British & French were AMONG the 62 million, Second, there were those, ie Churchill, who opposed appeasement. Third, Chamberlain's act was by no means the sole cause of war.
Counterfactuals are NEVER certain. We have no sure way of knowing what would have happened if Chamberlain & Daladier had not backed down. It has been suggested that the German generals would've staged a coup. Would they have? Would it have succeeded if they did? We will never know.
The 2nd & 3rd points are entirely relevant. There were those in Britain & France who opposed appeasement and the root causes of the war involve far more than the Munich agreement.
He was actually angry about the Munich pact. Disappointed that it had not led to war. The Brits & French were concerned about reliving the blunders by which they had stumbled into WW 1. And , again, the Brits did suffer not only battle casualties but civilian deaths in the Blitz. Not on the scale of Russia and Eastern Europe but not insignificant either.
England suffered terribly in the Blitz and the French under German occupation. The Allies made many mistakes, starting with imposing a harsh peace on Germany without actually completing the conquest of that country at the end of WW 1. Munich was but one misstep among many. Would any of us have behaved differently had our constituents been members of "The Lost Generation"? Its easy to say after the fact but life is more complicated than that.

7 years on and anthropoid is such an underrated movie. Both Jamie and cillian performed amazingly and with incredible accuracy. Mind you anything cillian touches is pure gold anyway.

Oh man I really wanted him to talk about "The Fall" (also on Netflix). Great show, wondering when the 3rd season will air
it's on BBC sometime this autumn so maybe when it's finished it will make its way to Netflix
If your a fan of the books of Fifty Shades, then in Darker he really embraced playing Christian Grey, us fan's are very happy! I first saw Jamie in the bbc series The Fall as serial killer Paul Spector, the show isn't who is the killer, you know from the first episode its him! Stella is the cop trying to find him, its a slow burn between the two leads! You see him living with his wife and two children and he's a grieven's counselor! But he has a dark side! The writing for the script is fantastic and so is the story and cast! I highly recommend it! I saw Anthropoid and its riveting, the 3rd act of the movie is a must watch! So people don't like the writing for Fifty Shades movies! However if you give Jamie a great script with excellent writing, like any great actor they excel! So check those out and anyone who as see The Fall know how great Jamie was! He got award for the role of Paul Spector and a supporting nomination for his role in Anthropoid! I hope he gets more interesting and will written characters because he's shown he's more then playing Christian Grey, I'am sure he signed on to open up other avenues to roles he'd really like to sink his teeth into! He's a incredible nice guy too!

If you're interesting about it, you might like Czech movie named Lidice. It's about the town that Nazi burned. It's really great movie with an extremely powerful story and with great Czech actors.

I saw Anthropoid. It was a really good movie. I really like Jaime as an actor & he can sing so well too.
The last part is so that Jamie would not be jealous of Dakota's tequila. And Colbert is smarter now. Drink AFTER the interview and not before.
Just watched the movie and it was brilliant. The last 30 minutes was nerve wracking...
As a person interested in politics and history, I find Jamie Dornan more attractive now. He is more than Mr. Grey.

I am from Czech Republic and and the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich is a very sad part of our history. It was not a town but a village called Lidice and Ležáky which were razed to the ground and deleted from all maps. All people were murdered by the Nazis. Men were shot and women and children were sent to concentration camps. And not only from this villages. I think that the assassination shouldn't have to happen because thousands of innocent people died but I understand why they did it. Anyway, all the actors of the film Anthropoid deserve a huge applause and admiration, because as a Czech I can say that it is filmed very well and I am happy that finally the whole world knows part of our history.
At the end the moderator was so rude. How can he reduce this man's talent and work to a role, one type of appearance?

Jamie's movie he talks about here is also a true story, The Seige of Jadotville which is also on Netflix along with all 3 seasons of "The Fall." The movie is very good. He had a total of 3 movies released in 2016 along with his work in The Fall. The range of characters he played is amazing. He has a wife and 2 small children so I bet he takes some time off to be with them for a while. Good luck to a talented actor whom I will look forward to seeing
not too long in the distant future.

Jamie's movie, "The seige at Jadotville" on Netflix is a great movie. Even better than Anthropoid and it is also based on a true English story. It is a Netflix original movie if I remember correctly. I did a Netflix search because I wanted to see more of Jamie Dornan
after seeing him in "The Fall" which is a BBC/Netflix 3 season show about a serial killer(played by Jamie). At that time I did not even know that he was the guy who played in
"Fifty Shades of Grey". This is one talented actor who used to be a Calvin Kline model in
his younger days. He really researches his movies and characters which is why he does
such a good job portraying them. If you like him go see all his work. He talks quite a bit
in interviews about what it was like playing such an evil character which is really interesting,
Loved Siege at Jadotville. I was in grade school during that time period. I lived near NYC and knew about Dag Hammerskjold. When his character is in the plane flying over Africa, I remembered how he died. At the time I didn't really understand the why. See this movie was an eye opener. I'm glad that the soldiers who fought there finally got recognition -- although many were already deceased when it happened. Hope you get a chance to see A Private War and My Dinner with Herve.

I think he misspoke. I think if you asked him he'd know it was actually Bohemia.
Jamie was great. Very likeable thoughtful guy. I usually love Colbert but was disappointed here. He was very eager to show how much he'd researched and barely let Jamie get a word in. And he seemed distracted throughout. Have never noticed him be this way before.
