When I think about all of the best surgical techs I've worked with in the past thirty-plus years, some were college trained, some were military trained, and some were hospital trained. Some were NBSTSA certified, some NCCT, some had no certification. It's more about the character and work ethic of the individual than how they were trained. If I was the hiring manager, a candidate's certification status wouldn't matter to me if they checked all the other boxes. However, so many beleive that being a CST is the only way to go, I recommend getting it if you can.
Just learned about these in class! But you simplified it way better!
Thank you for this video!!! All my questions have been answered
So, graduates of the school being advertised here are only eligible for the unknown, unrecognized, unaccredited credential.
The only certification recognized by the American College of Surgeons, the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, or the Association of Surgical Technologists is the CST by the NBSTSA. All state laws that address surgical technologists recognize the CST. The NBSTSA is a non-profit with CSTs and other surgical professionals on the Board of Directors.
More than 77,000 CSTs are certified through the NBSTSA. A person with CST certification may work in any state in the nation (a few states also require registration, but all CSTs may register). Because the CST is the only credential recognized nationwide, many traveling companies require the CST from the NBSTSA.
NCCT is a family-run company. NCCA mostly validates psychometrics. NCCT certifies a few thousand surgical technologists and is not recognized by any surgical professional associations. People with the TS-C credential are prohibited by law from working in some states.
AAH is not recognized by any surgical technologist law by any state in the US.
AAH is non recognizable in the US? is this a legit registry or not?
seems like an agenda to me...one that involves alot of money to be made by university programs only..same old story
that's totally true, I try to work in OHIO state with ABSA certificate and they don't recognize the certificate just the CST
@@puppetasit’s all about experience and selling yourself. I’m currently working in surgery. My hospital requires no certification. It’s all experience, selling yourself and knowledge you can have the CST. And doctors don’t want to work with you.
Very helpful to know....
AST also offers credit packages at discounted prices. I’m currently working on a credit package with all the credits needed for my next certification period for $50. It even includes the live credits required.
True that! I have used them many times.
Thank you for this informative video!
You do not have to earn off of your CEs through AST, you just have to submit them to AST. You can earn free ones through your hospital/employer. AST offers 3 free ones each year too.
Have you heard of HCPT? I need more information on that if you know? Thanks!
That partnership with AST is sneaky. As a nurse, my CEUs total about $40 every two years. To pay $230 including the AST membership for something that's not even a license is a total rip-off.
Where could one with a newly earned CST certificate do training/clinicals?
There are usually a lot of nurses on staff at the average hospital. How many surgical technologists are typically on staff at a hospital ? Is it more than 10, or less than 10 ?
I've always known about NBSTA and NCCT but have never heard of AAH. It's a great video very informative !
Glad it was helpful!
There’s a reason you’ve never heard of it!
I think preppy created aah
Chattanooga State College has an AAH Surg AAS degree and a technical course for certification through their vocational training side. It's competitive and they only accept 24 students a year.
Good morning , if you have ncorst, what are the requirements to take nbsta
Thank you.
If you are an AST member- most credits are free to process! The cost is actually $30 every 2 years. If you are at a hospital that offers 50 minute inservices or a BLS class- those should be submitted- for free. The problem is that they usually only hand them to the nurses. Start asking questions! This is not entirely accurate
Do you believe it is important for surgical technologist to get their certification? I believe we are lowering our standards all across the board
What about NCST
The NCCT DOES allow you to test at home for an additional fee of $45. Great video though
Good to know! I don't think I read that anywhere on the website.
AST NBSTA all the way 👍
I am a foreign medical Doctor from Venezuela, with a specialty in OBGYN and now I moved to EEUU, I would like to get my certification as a surgical Assistant, Is there any way to sit to take the exam from the American Board?
Hello , if you get any help please tell me , I am a surgical tech studied in India , i am in USA but I don’t know how to go about getting certified
I'm OBGYN too, did you get any information? Please, let me know
I m truck driver 44 year old can i doo all this just that surgicall tech
Thank you
NBSTSA you also can take it at home too
Hello, just want to ask you an important question. Why is it very important for a Surgical technologist to familiarize all the necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, tools to be used for surgery? Maybe you can give me a broad answer. Thanks😊
Because they have to pass the instruments to the surgeon
@@marmiahakim03 lol kind of obvious
Which one is Fortis College?
NCCT recertification fee is $89 annually. NCCT does not charge per CEU. It's a flat annual recertification fee; the CE is included.
Also, there is no membership requirement. NCCT is not a professional organization; it's an accredited certifying body only. A certificant pays the annual recertification fee to maintain a their NCCT certification, and there are no other built-in costs.
very greatful I found this omg the rabithole i went through just now thinking NCCT was fake and medcerts
Is MedCerts fake ?
No I have friend who finished her course with them and is doing her scrub hours at a state owned hospital in MD , is just certain jobs specify which they want I seen most want either NCCT/TS-c or NBSTA So look up if it’s worth it for your state or not
So your friend completed the med Certs program and sat for the exam ? And won’t get officially certified until completion of the scrubs ? I’m currently in the program and and re-worrying about not being able to get a job afterwards
@@ashleyblair671 its similar with a phlebotomy cert..I needed to have at least 100 sticks minimum in a clincal setting before even getting considered hired
Sorry, but medcerts is not a quality program. Any online only with no in person lab time or supervised clinical is NOT a quality program.
Which one is accepted in all US states?
CST offered by NBSTSA
Is it best to do the 2 year degree option or certificate route? How hard was the schooling for this ?
I’d say do the degree because a lot of hospital are going the higher education route to get hired.
@@Syxxclips they will start resorting to whatever they can get if scrub techs end up leaving the field because of various reasons that might be obvious to those that work in healthcare
People who wasted their time and money will tell you to get the degree so you can join them in their misery, but this is an in demand job that many hospitals even provide training on the job without a certificate or degree. If it really means that much to you that you feel the need to take 2 years worth of classes just to get something that shouldn’t take more than 6 months to a year, then by all means get the degree.
98 to pass your CST exam 👎. 65% for cst. 70% for ncct.
What about foreigner.???
I am a foreign surgical tech , truely I tried several time to get certified but it seems impossible
Is stepful real?
Yes it is
Is preppy really a good option?

Any update to this?
I'd assume not nobody has responded. 😭 I was about to pay for this program too.
He made a video on it. He said he liked it for what it teaches and for the cost. But he doesn’t like that you don’t get that hands on with your teachers.
Disappointing and frankly irresponsible to see a CST supporting Preppy. Is the clinical experience supervised? Is there hands on lab practice time or are you just thrown into the OR after doing some online modules?
I think the missing information in this video is what a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited program means. Accredited programs must meet minimum requirements like students practicing their skills in the lab and reaching competency before even setting foot in an OR. Then, they must scrub at least 120 cases as a student, supervised by a preceptor.
Even with the critical surg tech shortages states are facing, short term online programs are NOT the way to solve the problem!! Can you honestly say you’d be fine having surgery with a medcerts or preppy trained tech in your body? 🤨
@Dciea during these externships, are you scrubbing in as a student who’s still observed by a preceptor?
@Dciea Is there supervised lab time to practice hands-on skills before you enter an operating room, or you just confidently walk into the operating room after completing a 100% online program and “practice” on actual patients?
Excellent point. Even in my accredited, in-person program, our tests and homework were online, so the majority of my classmates did a lot of cheating. (I don't cheat; it's just foolish and patients suffer.) Very few of us passed the CST exam. They handled clinicals, but are not very knowledgeable.
@@erinmonroy1989 I'm currently in the preppy program. It is required in the externship portion of the program that you scrub into 125 surgeries.
I am not that point yet, but I've bought additional study materials Surgical Instrumentation Flash Cards for Technologists Exam, Differentiating Surgical Instruments Third Edition, Surgical Notes Second Edition as well as Anatomy 360: The Ultimate Visual Guide to the Human Body.
