  • Mercedes Benz 300G PRO - Wonderful and absurd.
    The Mercedes Benz 300G Professional is both wonderful and absurd. The G-Wagen 300GD Professional is a bare-boned off-roader, with none of the luxury and panache normally associated with Mercedes Benz. But what it does have is something very special.

    They are just amazingly fun to drive and are very reliable. Also the older engines (before common rail diesels) you can run on vegetable oil as long as you follow guidelines and have your fuel lines and washers uplifted with viton rubber.

    One feature that I love in the older G wagons, that they had part-time 4 wheel drive.

    Read many comment here but they forget this : This 4x4 are made for special duty like military or professional worker in undercircumstances. So its all about capability of the 4x4 to support the duty no matter what, when or where. In Indonesia we have test it and many senior off roader agree this 4x4 can do anything they want . No matter what the trail are, it just go there and have some fun. Unfortunetly the price are not for average off roader. That's the only problem about this 4x4.

    That truck/jeep is so perfect. It sits w the animalistic profile of a LR Discovery, and the safariness of a Toyota Land Cruiser. Those back doors are so bad-ass. That back wheel looks perfect. The black side-strip that runs the entire side/shoulder over the fenders..ugh! I love it! The snorkel is just too cool. And those tires AND wheels? Cmon. Perfect lift/clearance. And it drives like a champ?' Id buy it in a second, too.....bank-account permitting.

    RN/Paramedic/Fire-Fighter by profession... FACT: Airbags cause more injures then they prevent every year WORLD OVER. Buckle up and drive a Tank like the G-Wagen, you're fine. Add a Bullbar and you'll never have to worry unless it's a huge lorry. Kinda interested in the fact that you chose to build the 70-Series instead of the panel-side G-Wagen. I LOVE 70ser Cruisers and have used plenty of them (and a fair few Unimogs) "professionally", but the G-Wagen is constructed in a whole other way.

    now 2023, some militarys sell the G as surplus, ridicliolously cheap. but if seeing them as a parts kit that yet has to be assembled, its a good starting point for a build, cause there is nothing in it. i mean even younger G need refurbish to make long trips and have to deal with electronics then. recently saw a lwb 2-door van body as surplus spare part. sort of troop carrier, radio wagon, camptop possible. might fit on any rhd chassis if firewall gets exchanged. same on cabs for the ute versions. it is cheaper to buy a regular G and make it a ute than getting the ute. lovely cars they are.

    No center diff in the first generation W460, so only 2 levers for locking the front and rear diff.
    The transfer case lever engages from RWD to 4x4 witch equals in a W463 with 3 lockers, that the Center diff is locked.

    • @gnawershreth
      @gnawershreth Před 6 lety +1

      The Land Cruiser's big advantage is the price, and therefore its numbers. Parts are everywhere because of that and so are dealers. The reliability also gives it an advantage over certain other brands, although maybe not the G Wagen, but that one comes at a way higher price. The Land Cruiser is ideal for companies, NGOs etc. where the driver doesn't necessarily have a clue about off-roading. It probably won't break and if it does it doesn't cost an absolute fortune to fix unlike the G.
      That only goes for the older Land Cruisers though, not the modern soccer mom SUVs that are utterly pointless. Why anyone looking for a soccer mom SUV would go for Toyota I have no idea. I can find better looking and more luxuries city 4x4s than current Land Cruisers.

    I’m lucky enough to have a G as my daily driver. Not objectively a great car in 2021, tbh, but I love it for all its 1970s design quirks. I’d not take it too far off-road without changing the wheel/tyre package but what’s on there is perfect 90% of the time right now. I can’t take the new G seriously though. It’s a pastiche of its former self, but Mercedes seems to have invited less aggro than Land Rover for making the same decision - which is to build a car they can make money on, and sadly that means complying with regs that stifle these cars and which will eventually see them off. I’m heartened to see the aftermarket in the US and Australia is putting 35” tyres and a chassis lift on the Defender 2 and unleashing the beast it wants to be. I don’t think that will happen for the new G. The Grenadier is probably the real G, though it looked like a 110 from a distance, but having now sat in it, I wouldn’t take it over my current car. Probably wouldn’t take it over a modified Defender 2 on steel rims either.

      The G-Wagon was never produced in Germany. It was designed and built by Steyr Daimler Puch (the same company which designed the Haflinger and Pinzgauer) in Graz Austria (where it was built ever since). First Mercedes was mainly supplying engines and transmissions, afterfards they bought the rest of the shares as SDP was sold to Magna International.

      @terrytees Před 5 lety

      The real reason it's so expensive is quite simple.. You see your correct mercedes quality isn't there any more and they are mass produced, apart from this one. Thats the difference, you are paying for hand built tech in a county that outlaws slave labour and has a pretty good minimum wage in place and a high standard of living.

      @Panzergraf Před 8 lety +2

      +4xOverland You can get ex-mil G-wagens rather cheaply in the many European countries that have used them for their armed forces. I bought my '85 240GD for the equivalent of $6800 (or 90k ZAR). Not bad for a road worthy 4x4 with little rust, considering car prices here in Norway are usually much higher than in other countries.
      I really love mine, though the old 2.4l diesel engine is a bit on the weak side.
      Used civilian G's aren't that badly priced here either, probably bacause they've been slightly devalued by all the ex-mil vehicles on the market. They're around the same price level as comparable Land Rovers.

      +4xOverland I completely disagree. My mother owns an early Defender 70 with A/C here in the US. Not many were imported. She is consistently offered well over $40K for it. My grey market G320 imported by Europa Wagen in 97 with less than 60K miles and good condition would struggle to bring $25K. Less than 200 of these were imported (I am told) before MB took over the sales of G's in the US. You are welcome to buy mine. I have put over $10K into it. I am considering having it heavily modified by a custom builder in CA

      +The Big Bang A sightly strange thing to say. But thanks for the thought. BTW I don't have a doctor. Don't need one. Hay fever is the only thing I ever suffer from. And during my yearly aviation medicals, pronounced in near perfect health every time. Don't smoke, very little drink, eat sensibly but not obsessed with healthy eating because I believe that is very unhealthy. Long may it last. 4xOverland it was my understanding the engine had been 're-tuned' to run on lower quality fuel. However this may not apply to that particular model in that particular country.

    And you do know that the first G ("G4"/W31) was a 4/6wd open-top Saloon/coupe thing designed by the pre-Hitler (first "mule in the mid-late 20's) German Wermacht right??? Maybe the first BOX type W4XX series was requested by the "German Army" later on, but it's concept and first example was not the "modern" G's. A lot of auto historians quietly surmise that they copied the concept from the American Power Wagon which was the base for the US Command cars...

    It was not initially designed for the German army, but instead for the Iranian army at the request of the Shah of Iran: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_G-Class#History

      +Braai Meester Both are wrong. It's just a poor translation from German. You have to remember that it's an actual name. You don't translate names. If your name is William in England, it's also William in Argentina, Germany or Japan. If your last name is Miller, you don't suddenly change name to Müller when arriving in Germany or to Møller when arriving in Denmark. Names aren't translated. They're just mispronounced. Just like Mercedes, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Opel etc. etc. etc.
