- The Ted Coningsby Channel are at RAF Waddington to see the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CF-18 Hornets which are on deployment for exercise Cobra Warrior.
What are the differences between Canada's CF-18 Hornet and the usual F-18 Hornets? Well the CF-18 are carrier based Hornets with a few modifications. The really cool difference is primitive but very effective; a false canopy! There is a painted false canopy directly underneath the fuselage of the Hornet, right below the real cockpit. The idea is cause confusion when engaging in dogfights, causing some disorientation to enemy pilots. Pilots engaging in dogfights rely on keeping a physical visual lock on their opponent, so seeing the fake cockpit would confuse or disorientate their opponent. The RCAF decided to keep all of the features that come standard as a carrier jet such as carrier strengthened tailhook, reinforced landing gear and even the folding wings.
RAF Waddington is also home to the RC-135W Rivet Joint which is a dedicated electronic surveillance aircraft that can be employed in all theatres on strategic and tactical missions. Its sensors ‘soak up’ electronic emissions from communications, radar and other systems.
RC-135W Rivet Joint employs multidiscipline Weapons System Officer (WSO) and Weapons System Operator (WSOp) specialists whose mission is to survey elements of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to derive intelligence for commanders. The Rivet Joint flies with 51 Squadron and the 54 Squadron which is the ISTAR Operational Conversion Unit.
Also stationed here is the Shadow R1. Through a combination of sensors, Shadow contributes to the comprehensive intelligence gathering of the RAFs ISTAR Force. Its output is particularly valuable to ground commanders.
The Shadow’s high definition electro-optical and electronic sensors complements other platforms and capabilities, helping analysts prepare comprehensive intelligence products. Satellite communications links enable information to be downloaded and off-boarded during a mission and the aircraft is also fitted with a defensive aids suite. The Shadow flies with 14 Squadron and 54 OCU.
Exercise Cobra Warrior is run twice a year (March and September) and is the largest air exercise run by the Royal Air Force. The exercise is designed to train participants in high intensity, large force, tactical air warfighting operations. The exercise will take place from the 31st August to 29th September and will see a variety of aircraft taking part. At RAF Waddington, we hope to see RCAF CF-18 Hornets.
The fast jets will be supported by RAF Voyager aircraft conducting air-to-air refuelling operations, flying from RAF Brize Norton. In addition, UK Joint Helicopter Command aircraft will be participating, basing at RAF Leeming. The RAF’s Air Mobility Force will be taking part in the exercise, with sorties including deploying elements of 16 Air Assault Brigade during an associated ground mission, that forms part of the overall exercise scenario.

Oiii oiii Brad 🤙🏼Thank you so much
All f18a/d are carrier based. eg RAAF f18's still had the hook, launch bar (false launch bar) and strong landing gear/folding wings. During the development of the hornet an airforce or 'land' version was proposed but never put into production.
Differences are generally small and individualised for each country. canada had the paint job and identification light, the RAAF interestingly adopted the british ASRAAM instead of the AIM-9X and from memory had locally made sheepskin wool seat covers. They also had strain gauges installed on the frames to better track fatigue.
Later, the CAF and RAAF paired up to develop a center barrel replacement program to renew some hornets. Now that the RAAF has retired the f18, canada purchased 24 2nd hand raaf f18s which are now in use in the CAF.
I think the Swiss F18's have special modified flight control software which gives them even more angle of attack ability, as if the hornet was ever lacking.
Thanks for the info 🤙🏼 🇨🇦
Got to love the F-18 surprise slow speed bends and twists at the end!
Oiii oiii Dale 🤙🏼 🇨🇦

Oiii oiii Kyle thank you very much 🤙🏼 I can imagine that sounds awesome oooohhh yeah 🇨🇦
Did Ted get a flight with Maverick? 😂
Ooohh yeah
So cool it must be to be at Cobra Warrior to witness the depth of Aircraft on Parade. From heavies to fighter jets. First up that massive sentry E3, with the F18s on taxi way is epic shot. Think that may have been a Nato one. Educational aspect for me (Thanks Nikos) cockpit painted on the underside of fuselage mirror of actual cockpit. Intension to confuse and occupy enemy pilots long enough. I would have never known that. Cranwell appears in the form of a Phenom then the Shadow R1, looking like a private jet with secrets inside. How the world has become obsessed with intelligence and surveillance. But we have to have it. Then what can I day about F18's. Those 2 x F18s at about 34:00 mins with a few moves to be proud of and turn outs. Wow. How does it do that? Whilst evidently possible it's off the scale too witness. Got to see one soon. They are fabulous 👌 👏 👍.
Onto to Mildenhall stream now. That's my evening sorted thanks too Ted and Nikos. Oh yeah.

Oiii oiii Dan not far now from 1K videos! Ooohhh yeah. Indeed, a primitive basic but effective idea to have a fake canopy to confuse enemy…this is like something from Ancient Greek mythology deception. Brilliant idea and when seeing photos of the fake side up, it looks pretty real ooohh yeah 🇨🇦
How old is he RC135 airframe if based on a 707???
The first RC-135 variants were ordered in 1962. So coming up to 62 Years of a total 69 Years of the KC-135s lifetime.
As Dr Soda says, at least 60 years old
Great variety! Thanks Nikos
Oiii oiii Ellesee thank you so much 🤙🏼1730L that day. Ooohhh yeah 🤙🏼
I think saying that CF-18s are "carrier based" Hornets is a bit misleading. None of our Hornets can actually operate from a carrier for a couple of different reasons. They are the same as US Navy Hornets that have operated off of carriers though.
Not at all. These ‘were’ carrier based aircraft modified to be used on land. They still retain the carrier strengthened arrestor hook etc.
@@TedConingsby Yes....the aircraft was designed to fly off of carriers, but the wording would seem to suggest that Canadian jets fly off of carriers...which they don't. Also, there wasn't really an option to get rid of the hook and the folding wings....they came in extremely handy though.... and we just deactivated the launch bars. I will say that the Canadian jets have a different shock strut than US Navy jets. In any case....cool to see our Hornets over in the UK. Great videos!
no way that 18 just did a low approach
It sure did 🤙🏼 🇨🇦
