      I have had my notifications on and subscribed for over a year. Yt has never recommended a newer video. About every month or so I would have to go to their channel and look to see what I missed. The algorithm has gone back to something previous because a lot of things I was following have suddenly started dropping in with newer stuff where as I was having to keep a written list of channels and go search for them to find what I had missed. A couple months back yt had a questionaire about issues people were having and *POOF* my stuff started showing in my feed.

    Once in second grade my teacher found a mantis and kept it as class pet and fed it crickets for a couple days. He was my favorite teacher, probably because he had such weird animals as class pets, including a dead puffer in alcohol solution

      I had a mantis as a pet when I was a kid. They bite sometimes, but are great for pest control. It stopped biting me after a while..

      I mean in general the human brain just remixes what it has already seen/knows. Some are lightly veiled, some are pretty intense, but if humans want to represent something from outer space there's a reason we usually have at least some sci-fi alien that looks like a mantis.

    I had never seen a mantis where I live and then I went camping in Croatia. The first morning I woke up I had two huge mantises hanging outside the insect net of my bed.
    I was scared to zip out of my compartment 😂😂😂

      Mantises are extremely common where I live, usually around August or September, you can find them flying around porch lights at night.

      It’s okay! I have 3 mantis friends in the forest. Sometimes they hang around outside my door. But only the green ones, I’m not sure of the others. You can pick them up, it’s really fun just make sure not to hurt them

    I’ve actually held a praying mantis in my hand before. Even tho those suckers look scary as hell; they’re actually pretty chill if you stay calm while you hold them. I also got the chance to watch a mantis that wandered up onto our porch actually display hunting behavior; it was SO COOL. These insects are so majestic, and I’m glad they’re around.

      A A it looks like she misses, but the wings were open and that was just a warn attack, I’ve kept mantis for a long time and sometimes they just “punch” the supposed prey because they are scared or because they are full, that’s why the wings were open, if she wanted to hunt she never opposes the red wings.
      It was funny to see her miss tho

    Great video, just one thing though: I think mimicry and camouflage aren't exactly the same thing. While some mantis like the mentioned ant mantis do use mimicry, which is imitating/resembling other species, most mantis use camouflage, which usually refers to the ability to blend in with the environment

    They must have some pretty powerful mouth parts too, since they seem to be able to chew right through other insects without trouble. Same goes for dragonflies, who kind of eat the same way.

    Thanks for doing a video on my favourite animals. keeping and breeding them for almost 10 years now.
    Little correction btw: At 5:27 we dont see a mantis but some species of phasmid. A herbivore group of insects, that contains so called walking sticks and leaves. This might most likely be a male specimen of extatosoma tiaratum or "spiny leaf insect".

    I don't know if someone else has pointed this out yet, but the so-called bark mantis shown at several intervals throughout the video is actually a stick insect (order Phasmatodea). More specifically, it's a Macleay's Spectre (Extatosoma tiaratum)!

    They’re also one of the worst things to fall into your shoe.
    Their blades get lodged in your socks, creating a highly agitating feeling in your foot, and forcing you to pull the blades out individually.

    I dont know why but Centipedes have never once lost a fight I've ever seen them pitted against.
    So mantis isn't the ultimate.
