They were better prepared for winter than the Soviets. Stretched and bogged down supply lines are why they weren't able to finish the Soviets off before a war of attrition started.

One of my friends who served in the Gebirgsjäder near Salzburg, he had a moment that I find a pretty funny. He and another Kamerad had to keep watch in his camp, after a few hours both were on the verge of falling asleep, but then suddenly his commander jumped out of the bushes with a rubber knife and ran towards them, they immediately started shooting at him (the guns are of course loaded with blank cartridges). His commander had congratulated him and his Kamerad on having managed to take him out. There were a total of 4 camps in this exercise, the commander had previously eliminated all soldiers in the remaining 3 camps.

I served with the Norwegian Army in a light infantry battalion, and we had Gebirgsjägers doing a rotation in our camp for winter training in the far North, and I remember them getting hammered and trading us cigarette cartons pretty cheap. They made great money from it. Cool dudes overall.
One of the guys said his platoon/unit was a ''descendant'' of 6th SS Mountain Division Nord, which I thought was cool as I'm a huge military history nerd. Back the roots of the cold north I guess!
I remember doing training rotations in hohenfels… it gets cold as balls. Whole lotta coffee drinking and chain smoking went down there.

Lmao I just did my 11 month mandatory cobscription in Estonian army and I can relate to this too much 😂 I didnt give a single fuck.. the winter time was the worst. I was luckily an APC driver and had keys to it, so during the night while our squad was manning the outposts and guard duty, Id turn on this big fuckin beast of a machine and turn on the heatibg to the max. Our squad was always asking me to do that after that. No other driver dared do that lmao.. I just didnt really give a shit, not going to freeze my ass off. So we had 1 heavy gunner post on/in the APC(so basically 2 guys get to be inside the apc, while the rest man the outside posts and perimiter guard). So we always rotated, 1h in the apc and like 3h out in the cold. Better than 4 straight in the cold 😂 It was fun but there was so much bs and meaningless waiting all the time. Like 99% was bs.. but now a year later you really remember that 1% and how it was actually funny af. I wouldnt do it again but I can appreciate the experience.

The conscription is suspended since 2011. Before 2011 it was mandatory. In 2005 only 15% of people who could serve, serve in the army due to downsizing the army after cold war.
