Awesome video. Unless you take a beginner class that really builds from the bottom up it’s easy to miss these principles. A lot of these basics are hard to pick up on your own during sparring without a video like this.
1. Don’t talk about fight club
Recap, hopefully it’s right!
1. Deny under hook
2. Deny cross face
3. Deny penetrations of your knee and armpits, they are sacred pure space, knee to elbow foundation
4. Deny grips
5. Use everything, 4 points of contact, 5?, 6…
6. Alignment - base / posture / structure

Great advice! Some principles to add include:
-control the inside
-to attack, you need a pull and a push
-to defend, remove the push
-all successful techniques boil down to grip, angle, and position (in that order)

High level Judo, BJJ and JKD? He's not just a beast, that's a dangerous man.
When I started training BJJ most of my grappling experience was decades old folk style wrestling in high school, so I had to learn quick not to give my back and not panicking when on my back. After that the simple concepts of keeping my knees and elbows between my body and my partner/opponent went a long way to helping me survive and learn.
Now a year into blue belt, principles and "rules" like in this video are like precious gold nuggets. Rarely when rolling or drilling do I pull-off textbook perfect examples all the fundamental techniques I learned as a white belt, it's about adapting and feeling what's going on and applying the underlying principles, especially during transitions between positions and exchanging advantage or control.

@Deu2929 after the first 3 weeks the recovery is starting to become faster. I'm down to one day recovery now. As for the movements and combo etc... that stuff is going to take months to learn and memorize aha

I think it really helps to have some principles into which we can place techniques as we learn them, rather than learning techniques one by one and eventually (maybe) figuring the overall principle. This should help me progress a little more efficiently. Thank you.

A lot of people don’t emphasize it enough. I’ve had to help other practitioners with this tons. Underhooks are death. I think you shouldn’t get a blue belt until you know what they are and can deal with them on a basic level. Offensively and defensively.someone hood at gaining and blocking underhooks can give a higher level grappler a hard time. Easily.
I think we need a new Gi design. One with red colour up the side from the knee to the armpit and down the inside of the arm to the elbow, and another around the collar or the neck. That would remind people of the first three principles. :D

I don't get what he meant by Base, posture, structure. The rest of the video was great.
Base = Any “platform” fm which you apply or absorb force fm relative to your goal.
Posture = A straight spine. Any time your spine is bent, turned or twisted your Jiu-Jitsu suffers.
Structure = The most efficient and effective way to utilize your limbs.
Any time any one of these things are not correct you are out of alignment.
If we think of it in a game of 3’s then any time our opponent doesn’t have all 3 but we do then we’re “winning”. If we don’t but our opponent does we’re “losing”. If we both have 3 then most times it’s a stalemate which manifests itself as nobody getting ahead of the other.

😞I wish I could still do Jiu Jitsu/Judo. Rheumatism is keeping me off the mat. But I can recommend it to everyone who can. These sports give you valuable lessons for the rest of your life. And it's a healthy exercise as wel.

There's a vast and different reason and it's ultimate utilization of any form of learning martial art's. There is the purpose of only self defense and there's the purpose of compition. Judo on Judo is by far and away from Judo on an unsuspecting someone who has an agenda not conducive to one's life style.

This is pretty good stuff - I think I still prefer John Danaher's breakdown, but these rules are as good as any when it comes to figuring out how to approach BJJ as a beginner.

The underhook is huge.
I just start BJJ for 4 weeks. I am saw news people come in and beat me up every class. I am so burn out right now.
Don't worry, that's not abnormal, especially if you're light or smaller than those new people, and if the new people are more athletic or have a background. There will not be a big delta in your performance and someone new until you get closer to that blue belt. (That's the point of the blue belt in most dojos, you should be able to handle someone bigger than you that's untrained and have your fundamentals down in terms of defense, positions, sweeps, submissions, escapes). That takes a while, and you need pretty much all of it to fend off larger, stronger people.
Anybody train jujitsu with a hernia? Is that even possible?

#1: wash anything that is involved in your training on a day-to-day.
If both your opponents arms are over your arms when they have back control, doesn't that make it easy for them to choke you with RNC?

Go back far enough and the ground was never a place to be…there’s a principle which has been lost for sure.
How is rolling sparring? Its not, sparring is a striking term that doesnt apply to Ju Jitsu unless your throwing stikes. Its rolling .
The consequences of losses are just as dire in jiu jitsu. If you did not acknowledge the tap somebody would get hurt or killed
@@GyrGhost and if you get elbowed in the neck or face same circumstances. However, still doesn't change the fact that sparring specifically refers to strikes.
It's strange to see defensive jiu-jitsu taught conceptually.
As a concept, it is always better to be the one attacking than reacting
most important rule- never tap to pressure. tap your opponents with your pressure. 😂
