- Hey I'm Justin Mitchell. I'm a professional photographer specializing in on-water foiling action. I'm available for work worldwide. I speak English and Spanish.
Here's my portfolio: justinmitchell.co.nz/
Filming the AC boats is just a hobby I picked up during the last cup.

Location: Auckland, NZ
Wind at time of filming: 10-15kts W (Left to right)

I finally managed to get some actual sailing footage of the recently christened "Taihoro". When they started off in really light breeze, the chase boat towed them closer to the Rangitoto lighthouse and let them go. After a little while the breeze disappeared and they stopped for a bit. As the breeze returned it came back a bit stronger, and they changed to a smaller jib. They took off downwind and put in a few laps.

Awesome footage Justin. You seem to be in the right place at the right time! Well done! :)
thanks mate... this time I was in the right place... there a lots of times where I'm not...haha...I'm happy when it works out
Hi Justin, nice to see you in action again. Thanks for your updates
CHeers Riccardo... it'll be short-lived unfortunately... they'll be shipping the boat to BArcelona very soon
Yes indeed, welcome back Justin!!
Superb. Not so much wind i can tell, still always above the water. I think again team NZ will be the one to beat
That in any case…
Not will be, they are the one to beat
They are the defender ffs..
nice control boys! CHAMPIONS!
Maintaining the ride height looks inhumanly flawless. Like AC40, less action than a slow game of golf, praying for wind or the chance someone is sent aloft to spot wind(I know not happening)
Excellent footage Justin. The competition will be devouring this 🙂
thanks Roger... I used to wonder whether I should upload these videos, but with all of the official recon photos and videos, I'm sure the teams don't get anything valuable out of them that they don't see already... they're just nice for people like us to watch
@@JustinMitchellTV Yes, the competition will be doing this to. Can't wait to see the next 3
Was looking for her when I went for my walk along long bay. It was a beautiful late autumn day with not much wind so I’m surprised and impressed at how fast she’s moving.
Amazing footage. Thank you!
You're welcome 👍
Looking great so early in their prep
It takes incredible technology to hold a foiling yacht steady in one place and move Rangitoto backwards behind it at ultra high speed. ETNZ's below-deck mechanics must have warp-factor. The other teams don't have a chance.
I’am looking forward to the build up to this cup 💪💪💪 Awesome when you look at how far we have come from when Australia won the Cup with Alan Bond 👍👍 where will it be in 50 years Amazing
haha... I remember watching that last race on tv... I didn't understand it, but I remember watching it and all the celebrating that happened after it... it is amazing to see how far we've come... even since the last cup
a lot of history there! cheers 👍
Was working 30 floors up on a swinging stage, on a site beside Hyde Park in Sydney when Aus 2 crossed the finish line ... car horns were tooting all over the city as well the big ships horns in the harbour, n new PM, Bobby Hawke sayin bosses should give everyone the day off !!
@@JustinMitchellTV all the best to you mate 👍 it’s after six over here 🍺 🍺 cheers
Beautiful. ❤
Wonderful footage, so precious , so detailed. Being and italian supporter I wonder what kind of effects it produces on the other teams. To me it looks/sounds SCARY ! :-D
Thanks... I'm lucky these days when I catch them on video... they've been very elusive! Its looking good that's for sure... and straight out of the shed and sailing on the same afternoon on their first day was impressive.
Ciao Justin Grazie 💪
cheers Giuseppe👍
With that sheet adjuster, I think the other teams have their work cut out for them. That is pretty innovative.
Look at that gorgeous rocket ship on water.
Impressive indeed...
Nice work.
THanks!
seem to have found a sweet spot just above the water line, be interesting to see how it goes in some short chop or swell.
that'll be the big test, once it gets up to Barcelona and a bit more swell
They will just adjust the ride height
The lower the ride height, the faster the wind flow beneath the hull
And the two other boats so far revealed, and with such fanfare, are still not sailing. The Kiwis are a cut above.
Very clever, just b4 you left for Barcelona, please gives us a look at the speed using your secret foils please
There's no chance of that happening.
They're surprisingly heeled over at times when in displacement mode at low speed as they seek the energy required to get up.
I think it’s to reduce the wetted area and reduce drag for a quicker take off. Very similar tactics to dinghy sailing.
Amazing pics again, thanks Justin👍
no probs! 👍
fantastic footage THANK YOU ! really interesting. The water looks pretty flat, do you have any info about the wind in this session ? to match the performance with the condition. The take off is smooth but a bit slow, it needs to be compared to the wind strength...
I think I put it in the description... 10-15kts coming from left of screen... the first part of the video, before the jib change, was a lighter... it completely disappeared for a little bit then came back with more pressure.
@@JustinMitchellTV yes yes , sorry I didn't check all descr. thank you very much
more great footage thank you
cheers thanks👍
You can see it is already faster than the other boats. Even the ones that have not launched.
🤣
Thx
Stunning
Go team nz
Aroha
From AOTEAROALAND
Think will be a two boat race btw Usa &NZ
Were you on the left or right of me , we got exactly the same period of sailing pass Rangitoto 😂
I was in Takapuna at the time...
We make good boats. Love this land and water aotearoa
It's called NEW ZEALAND
Don't know the name of the country you're in
Team New Zealand are from New Zealand, not aotearoa

What are the little struts that stick out the side? The crew can take them off easily but wonder what purpose they serve?
I'm pretty sure they're the go pros etc for getting footage of foils in and out of the water... Could have some sort of sensors as well
Great footage! Does anyone know why the jibs they're using have holes?
I don't think they're holes... I think they're markers, like patches/stickers... could be part of the manufacturing... or may be they have sensors in them?
I am seeing what appear to be struts extending outboard just aft of the mast on either side of the boat which I have not seen before on any boat. What are these for?
these could be the cameras they use to get footage of the foils in and out of the water? they won't have them for racing, just development stage
Thx Justin. I agree with your comment. I just don't recall ever seeing these appendages in any previous video on any boat. Great videos by the way.
They've got them on the 40s... They could also be for monitoring the sails... Either video or some other type of measuring... Heat etc... who knows
Is it worth putting Te Rehutai to sea again for two boat racing. Assuming of course there's a crew that know how to sail it.
logistically pretty difficult I'd say... they'll be doing two boat racing with the little ones soon, once this one heads off to barcelona
As they are sailing data retrieved will be telling the team just how the 2 compare to put them together on the water tells everone else. I would not at this stage.
I have a feeling this is only half of her real speed because they saw you and me
🤣
Does anyone know how many knots its doing or think it's doing.
i don't... I don't think anyone can really know
@@JustinMitchellTV thanks mate must say doe Taihoro looks quicker then Te Rehutai. Wonder how much quicker Taihoro will be when using their new racing foils, keep up the good work with the footage much appreciated mate.
Cheers Mathew, I can't wait to see with the new foils... I'm sure the big difference will be low wind speed foiling ability
Soon after this they went all the way up long bay and never look back
this was the time they derigged and towed back to base
Same ribs following along, new ribs don't make the boat faster
I cannot for the life of me understand why ETNZ have/will not just put the boat onto a AN-124 and fly it straight there. Losing a minimum of three weeks in travel? Madness.
Money$$ I suppose... They were out for 7 hrs yesterday so they're obviously trying to make the most of their limited time... Would be a lot quicker by air that's for sure
Justin, Providing your video footage to TNZ competitors for free does not make you a friend of mine. That's not a Kiwi thing to do.
Thanks Brent, you make a good point, and I've thought about it a few times before... another way to look at it is I'm helping grow support for etnz, giving us kiwis a chance to watch them sail, and get excited for the team and the cup before they head off to Barcelona (very soon)... the official Recon team is physically with them in the base and out on the water in a chase boat taking photos and videos for all the other teams...every single training session... this is the valuable content that gets handed to NZ competitors... I doubt the footage I get from a beach somewhere provides any extra info that the other teams don't already know... the public don't have access to all of the recon footage and photos, so for us, the footage from people like me seems like spying... but really it just lets us watch the boat sail around, from perspective of someone watching from the shore.
You have friends ?
Be nice to have a non-maori name on one of these boats, or is that asking too much of somebody?
At least Ken Read the American commentator will never use it's maori name,it will be either ETNZ, the Kiwi's or the New Zealand boat.
