US-American swimming star Katie Ledecky is a five-time Olympic gold medallist! She made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Olympic Games. 15-year-old Ledecky qualified to swim in the final of the women's 800-meter freestyle by placing third overall in the heats with a time of 8:23.84. The rest was history!

It's amazing how controlled she was. She knew the time it would take and I'm sure she was spot on that time. She shut in down when she needed to preserve energy and then she went 8 seconds faster in the final. So smart at that age.
Can someone enlighten what ‘shut in down when needed’ is and at which time stamp are we looking at for this? Which 8 seconds faster in the final?

32 lengths rather than 16 we're used to watching in the 4x400 or 400 free. Katie does the 1500 too, so that's 60 lengths (30 laps).

What is interesting about this video from 2012 is the evolution of her kick; she still swims the same at the front end, but has changed her backend. She now uses a 2 beat, 1 beat, and surge point kick.

Yeah Titmus is incredible in the middle distance events. The 400m was a great race. It's amazing Katie even swims the 200&400m though, she was strictly a distance swimmer for a long time.
