- can you ride a big adventure bike off road?
This was a fun video to shoot! I take the Harley Davidson Pan America up the infamous Duck Creek Road in the Scenic Rim near Beaudesert.
Bonus to anyone watching I also give some tuition on the way up!
Lets see how the 1250 Pan America compares to the mighty KTM 1290 on the same hill.
I throw in some road riding on the way home.
Tyres used in this video are the Continental TKC80 at road pressures! Yes I'm a bit lazy!
This Harley has certainly grown on me now!
I also chat about a few changes I've made the the Pan Am, including my to and throw with the handlebars, a constant battle but I think I'm done!
Enjoy!

Camera doesn’t do that climb justice. Impressed by the Harley’s capability - great vid dude.
Bloody rough ay! Harley gobbled it up, only slip up was in a muddy puddle. That motor just churns over!
A great talk-through Mal on a gnarly Duck Road.
Yes it's rough as guts at the moment. The talking whilst riding and explaining as I go I figured would help a lot of riders to see how calm I make the entire action. I enjoy this style of riding, it's certainly the challenge on a big bike. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Impressive riding on the big Pan Am
Thanks! Im really starting to enjoy this bike!
Man you’ve got some skills. Impressive!
I appreciate that!
Loot at that, you have taken the trouble to answer everyone who posted... top man. Oh you don't have to answer this, I just wanted to say it. 🤣
Haha yep I love getting and answering comments! Lucky for me I don't get many bad ones, I occasionally get a shit comment and it can rattle me a bit, my mum taught me if you don't nothing good to say don't say anything! 99.9% are positive comments, cheers!
Hey Mal I just received the T-shirt and hoodie I ordered and I have to say that they are awesome and will get heaps use
Thanks mate 👍🇦🇺
Bloody awesome Bruce ! Enjoy mate and help spread the word! Just uploading a full 1 day training video from today with a client on a gs1200. I'm sure you'll get some great tips, will take about 12 hours to upload to CZcams. Thanks again!
@@oldmanspeedadventures oh yeah and thank you so much for the free T-shirt as well
I’ll be waiting for that next video and yes hope to get some tips from it
Very cool Mal, makes me want to go for a ride !!
You need to hit ya boss up mate for some time off, business networking discussion perhaps! How bloody good is that Harley!!
Great video. Really enjoyed the onboard tips and the sound quality wasn't bad at all. Quite a surprise package seeing you tackle that terrain on the Pan Am.👍👍
Cheers yeah the big beast did that hill pretty comfortably I reckon because the low end power delivery is so smooth. Loving the Harley and I think it will surprise a few people!
Thank you, great tips, very helpful.
No worries at all mate there's a new video uploading right now, should be up by tomorrow!
Nice presentation Mal.
80% rider.
Last time up there for me was 30 odd yrars ago.
That was in a Range Rover. The track is much worse now but the Pan Am looked just as comfy as my old Rangie.
cheers Dean yes its copped some water damage over the past couple of years that for sure.
And I agree the Harley was like a mid 80's Range Rover!
Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Great video! Commentary was perfect
Thanks mate yep just thought I'd give it a crack without all the hassle of the media mod and extra microphone. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, thank you for sharing!
Your welcome!
Well done. The big bike does get nice grip on road pressures. It seemed to be better than my 890r on road pressures. The camera definitely doesn’t properly show the steepness. I found the bitumen downhill with approaching bad drivers more challenging.
Yes I agree the downhill can be dodgy! Had a pantech mid way decide he liked my side of the road more! There was about 5 traffic light roadworks also! I'm really enjoying this bike it definitely climbed better than both the Triumph Tiger and the kato, you could hear how calm the engine was, pulled like a big diesel!
@@oldmanspeedadventures yes it seemed very tractor like. I definitely had to use more throttle than you for some sections. I will be quite interested to watch your progress with that huge machine. Looks like it will be very good on long hauls.
Great effort and good technique. Looking forward to your road trip with your partner...seems a lot of the Adv riding videos is always male based, if like me, you involve the missus, it increases the chances of being able to continue to purchase my toys.
Haha 100% happy wife = more bikes and more bike time! We head off next week!
Cool video, makes it look easy 😮 great job!
Slow and steady wins the race! All about minimising stress, good body positioning and confidence goes a long way! Thanks for watching!
Your commentary and video were so good I felt like I was there tackling that track, even though I don't have the skills.
Cheers mate Im glad you got the vibe out of the video!
Great advice again Mal, couple things in there I had no idea 👍 Just goes to show big bikes can get up tech climbs as long as you apply the correct basics which you’ve shown us.
Cheers mate yeah sometimes the smallest advice, like forming the v in your hand can change everything! Yes big bikes can go amazing places just need to put the right amount of input in to make them work!
Great tips man. It’s good to hear what’s going on in your head as you’re negotiating different spots along the ride. And I noticed you weren’t puffed on the snotty stuff. Which makes me think maybe I’m muscling the bike too much during the ride…because I’m definitely puffed. Lol!
Yeah your right it demonstrates how calm I am through the tough stuff, not fighting the bike, letting the bike grind its way, got my body balanced so I don't feel the weight of the bike. You know the drill!
Far out I would have stopped half way up on that first section and start crying 😢 and that’s on a KTM690, is the Pan America easier off-road to ride than your previous KTM1090
Yes the power delivery is a bit smoother, and the centre of gravity feels a lot lower, I feel super comfortable on this bike, really enjoying it! Hope the instructions help out a bit!
Really enjoyed that, learned loads of off road stuff too. 40 mins makes a change, it's good to watch a longer ride occasionally. Thanks
Thanks Michael I appreciate the feedback. It's an odd thing going out with the camera and filming, then uploading you never know how it will be received, this video I thought I'd try the tuition whilst riding and see, I've had some great comments. Today I'm filming a one on one lesson hope you enjoy it. Should be up by Sunday night. All the best.
@@oldmanspeedadventures Will defo be watching, Ive been in bikes non stop since I was little, and still find that there is lots more to learn, Ive not done much off-roading but there will soon be a PanAm in my garage, so looking forward to your next video.. 👍👍
That worked just fine. I think I would have possibly stalled once or twice on the 790. The HD appears well sorted.....
It's like driving a Land Cruiser!
Wow, last time I went up, it was nowhere near the condition its in now.
Well done, I don’t think I’d attempt going up alone (at my age, I need help lifting up my bike if I drop it).
Yep it's rough! Not the place to be pinned under a bike! All the best!
Wow...What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing your ride. I own a PAS too and love it! Stay save and greetings from Germany!😊
Hi thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment! Yes very lucky to have such beauty close to home! Enjoy the ride, great bikes!
Love the video! Could you fill me in on how you modified the end of your bars? I hate how the damn guards flip off when off-road :/
Sure. I cut about 10mm off the guards to get rid of the clip part. Drilled an 8mm hole and rounded the edges with a file. Used some alloy bar ends and replaced the Allen head fixing bolt with a longer bolt, this goes thru the guard into the bar ends and tighten up. Hope that helps! I will post a 5 minute video this week on how to.
Thanks a bunch! @@oldmanspeedadventures
That a hill i want to take my BMW up, there will be a bit of huffing and puffing
Yes its need concentration! great ride though!
Can you still get through to O’Reillys via Dick Creek Road on a bike? Would be an awesome overnight camp.
Yep the intersection where I am in the rainforest is only a few km away
The new Kove 800x is 160kg with 97bhp. Wondering if 250kg bikes still make any sense.
Yeah for sure will be interesting to see! I guess its a fine line between so called adventure bike and just a trail or enduro, also it just depends on what floats ya boat, but I agree 100% with you, I have done some amazing things on this Harley and been having a ball on it!
@@oldmanspeedadventures All manufacturers will seriously address weight because it's becoming ridiculous
Looks fun. Thanks for sharing. How do you rate the Harley? My only concern would be the weight of it.
It's an awesome bike. It carries it weight a lot better than the ktm 1290. It's definitely more manageable on trails like this than the big kato . On the road it is bloody awesome. I genuinely love riding this bike. All the big bikes roughly weigh the same. HD clain 251kg WET. so take out 23 litres fuel and oil brings it well within all its competitors. And it's way cooler!!!
@@oldmanspeedadventures yeah they’re something different which is good
Hey mal I’m thinking of buying a pan America but would like a
Professional opinion on the bike cheers 🍻
Sure I have no obligation to HD to talk the bike up.
I love it.
It's like a muscle car of adventure bikes.
I paid for the bike if I didn't like it it would be gone.
I've got some newer videos on my set up etc.
It's perhaps not as refined as say the 1290 ktm I had but I love the rawness, the look etc.
Yes I had an issue, but it was the only bike in Australia to have the issue I had with an intake manifold and HD sorted it quickly.
My opinion break away from the crowd and do something different. The suspension with its adjustable features is amazing. Good luck! Oh and the motor is next level exciting!
Bike seems really capable. As some one looking to get there firat adv bike, would this one be good for a begginer offroad. Never ridden dirt on a motorcycle i habe dabbled in mtb though. Just dont have room for two bikes.
Big call I'd perhaps consider a smaller bike, Triumph Tiger, Vstrom etc may be better suited to start with. The Harley is a beast of a bike.
@@oldmanspeedadventures alright bet. Ill definitly be looking at a few smaller bikes.
Hey mate how does the Harley compare to your other bikes eg: Ktm ?
Very different, I enjoy the Harley more it's a more "connected feel" ,for pure off road sure the Ktm would be better maybe, but for long distance open dirt roads the hd is so good. I really enjoy this bike. Hope that helps!
@oldmanspeedadventures Thanks mate I just watched you adjust the forks while on the dirt heading west sounds good.
OK video but the camera was too low, was looking at the ground just in front of the bike too often.
cheers mate sorry didn't have my fully qualified film crew with me, just me and a shitty gopro. Camera was chin mount. Hard to know what you shoot till its done.
Sweet az, still shows the bike in a good light, I'm warming to it more with every review. Probably gonna add one to the bike shed soon.
