- Preparedmind101 takes a look at the Snugpak Scorpion 2 tent and gives feedback on the first use camping in 20 degree weather. The Scoprion 2 is a compact fly-first design suitable for those who actually wish to pack a tent and or stealth camp. Much different than your typical dome tent from the department store, the Scorpion 2 consists of the inner tent, the outer completely enclosed fly, and three tent poles. It's easy to set up and very high quality. I will be using it many more times between now and next winter.

I've had one for about two years now and have used it in all sorts of conditions in the Pacific Northwest. I've tested it in high winds, heavy rains, and in winter conditions. It's well made and has performed flawlessly with no leakage, condensation, or problems with snow load. I leave the two parts attached as it makes setup easier. I can set it up in under five minutes. I would recommend this tent to anyone needing a lightweight, four season, two person, tent.
The fly first is great because you can use it just as a fly if you wanted and when setting it up in a rain or snow storm your gear stays dry while you finish it up. Thanks for sharing ;)-
They do fantastic sleeping bags. I have their 2 season one and it quite easily keeps me warm down to -2 degrees Celsius. Their stuff is incredible
Snugpak benefits from previous companies' products, and a lot of military feedback. My 40-year-old tent is a Backpacker 2 from now-defunct Ultimate Equipment. Also really a generous 1 person shelter. Also same colour as yours. Also set up the fly then hang the inner. The inner breathes but repels dripping condensation from the outer. Packs smaller than yours. My old-fashioned straight poles are lost but no problem, I adapted trekking poles
Been looking at these for years. Allways looked cool
I have a snugpak scorpion 3 and a cave, et Al , and other products…. I love them all….. go snugpak😁👍
I love running this without the inner tent. Its more spacious and easier to organize. I have the scorpion 3
Kind of reminds me of the REI Clipper 2 man tent I used to use on bicycle tours.. Great looking tent I like the camo friendly color of the tent. It should work fine in extreme conditions.
Great video. Snugpak does make great equipment. Thanks.
Just got this tent in the mail, 5 mins set-up and it most certainly is a 1.5 man tent lol. The design on it holds the tent fabric really taught when staked down. Can't wait to test this baby out.
Thanks Chris I'm shopping for a tent. Like the tent also.
Another nice video! I went with the Scorpion 3. love it!! I use this and an Eno Jungle nest hammock with Profly down here in Texas.
Chris, love the videos, good to see more than knives , even though I love the knives too, keep up the great work, greetings from Iowa .....
Seen a couple of tents with that fly first design. Its nice if you are in a raining situation, and want to keep the main tent dry.
Maybe I am wrong but that sounds very reasonable for a 4 season tent. Usually 4 seasons are for the hardcore and are priced to match.
The only negative I see with the design is the vestibule and water/ snow being an issue going in/out but I like the way its like a volted ceiling at the entrance for headroom and ease of access. Good use of space.
Obviously this would also be great for an ultra lite set up using just the exterior for, say, summer outings.
Looks like a nice tent.
Maybe I'm just a bit old school, but, despite having used a lot of different tents over the years, I still haven't found a 2-person tent that I like better than the basic Eureka Timberline. Yes it's an old fashioned A-frame tent that's a little low on head room sometimes, but it's relatively inexpensive (less than $150 or $200 with a vestibule), lightweight, can legitimately sleep two people and is damn sturdy. I've had mine for nearly twenty years now, and it still looks like new despite lots and lots and lots of use! (I take care of my gear!) I've camped in that thing at all times of the year and in all weather conditions ranging from nice calm days to heavy snow to a thunderstorm so powerful it bent over an aluminum flag pole to a tornado (NOT recommended!), and it has always kept my stuff dry and bug free!
My only real complaint about the Timberline is that it doesn't come with a vestibule. There is one available, but you have to buy it separately. On the upside a vestibule makes it even more wind & weather resistant than it already is, and they weigh next to nothing.
Technically the Timberline is only rated as a 3-season tent, but unless you're planning an ascent on Everest, a trip to the South Pole or on camping through a hurricane you shouldn't have any problems. I certainly haven't! There is also a new TimberlineSQ that comes with a vestibule and has a middle spreader pole to create more headroom inside; otherwise it's the same tent. If I were buying a new one and had the extra cash this is probably the one I'd go with.
This tent looks effing sweet. I have always been a tent guy from camping with my dad as a kid and I have had problems keeping myself steady in a hammock since I tend to move around a lot when I sleep. I picked up a dome 4 man a few weeks ago and I like it but this is way more awesome. Adding another item to the list, as always thanks for the review!
Awesome! Let me know how you like it, I never got one yet. The time is coming soon though cause that 4 man tent I spoke of last time only has another year or two in it I fear.
great review thanks!
This comment section doesn't have nearly enough brokeback mountain references. I just want to point out that there will never be a Becker knife named "Will". (I AM considering Jessica 3...)
Nice, Will look for it in The Netherlands
I think you may be mistaken. I am pretty sure I remember seeing a Becker Bk-Will on they're website.
Looks like a good stealth tent too !
It was kinda funny watching Will just look every now and then over his shoulder.
good review,nice product.
That is winter? Trade you my winter for yours!!! :D
Sick tent!
Have to get one of those
Great Looking Tent Chris.. Thanks For Sharing...I Knew There would Be A Heli Or Something Making Noise...Wouldn't Be One Of Your Vids Without Something Making Noise..
Looking at the tent, my first thoughts were to the lack of ventilation. It looks like it would indeed keep you warm, but on really cold nights it looks as if it would frost up on the inside of the tent and on the really warm nights, it would probably get kind of toasty, That's where you would really like to have a breeze coming through.
Thanks for the review
nice for a tent. looked at those years ago. hard to beat a good hammock.
Very good review..
Nice review, small tent but large quality.
good video, personally I will stick to my tarp for lightweight pack this summer :)
I wish i could send you a pic of my tent. Its 1/4 that size. Its not Bullitt proof but it works. Great vid.
sweet vid
The tarp waived goodbye at the very end. Great timing lol.
People camp with their spouse bro this looks perfect keep nice and warm.
Hey Chris, next time you set this tent up and bring it down leave the two pieces together and just drop the tent, just remove the poles for a faster set-up and break down time .
Does the inner door have a screen option for summer camping? Great review!
Nice tent . . . Now I want one. I do FaceLick on my computer, but not on my phone because I have better things to do than stare at my palm all day. Thanks for the review!
two men that don't mind getting really really close! haha,,, i love this tent, the best one i've ever owned!
Rob
Thanks for the great review. You could add the Scorpion 2 and the Scorpion 3 to your Amazon store. The Scorpion 3 looks to be the same design with a bit bigger footprint. I would probably go with that one since the weight is nearly the same.
I think many doing reviews on this tent are doing it when its brand new and the inner wall tent is not attached yet. Most are not realizing that the tent can and usually is packed up once used one time as a one single unit. Or rolled up with inner and outer attached together then rolled up. So when you set it up you can do so in the rain without water getting in it during the pitching phase. This is much like the Heilberg tents. Saves time and keeps inside of tent dry during rain. This also makes it quicker and easier than the first time set up as seen here.
i like it .i might have to get one .
researching tents now , need a new shelter . considering strongly the Big Agnes Fly Creek . pricey item that one is .
Love the color. The design is a take off of am older Sierra Design tent. I think North Face had made a couple of versions of this back in the late 80s and 90s too. The "Tadpole and Dragonfly"?.. I'm a side door guy personally, i still have my SD Summer Moon tent (modified dome). Its been in the snow, on my motorcycle, etc... All this said , hammocks are the way to go! Nuff said...
cool tent
Thx Chris. That price omg! But it is nice. Ill stick to my ozark lol it has same basic setup and rain proof,2 poles and inner liner.Had it 5 years now with 5-6 months of the year regular use.$40
Hey, thanks for the video. If you had to use this tent in pretty steady rain do you think you would be able to set it up relatively easily with out getting the inside too wet?
I have always told my children that tent size is actually like serving size. 2 man is one, 4 is 2 comfortably...but I don't do a lot of heavy hiking.
Or one man and his doggy best friend!
I haven’t seen one review of this tent where we are shown from inside how much space the porch has
Great review. Laughing so hard, "Two man........two men that don't mind...."
Check out the Bunker tent. Pretty cool tent to me
their web site has it listed for 399.00 as of today so I guess your review has increased sales enough for them to hike up the price
Do a review on the bushcrafter pack hanging on the tree
Can you attach the inner tent to the rain fly before setup? Also is there a way to attach a tarp to the front door so when it's raining you can attempt to keep rain out when you open the fly?
Hi Chris, have you ever tested the Mystery Ranch back pack
i see the tent is good quality, but i'm still conserned about condensation. how much of the inner tent is no-see-um mesh?
nice tent nice review as far as a 2 man im thinking 1 man and his dog
PREPAREDMIND101 I'm wondering how well it would take a mylar blanket between the fly and inner tent in serious extreme cold weather. Up here in the cascades and Olympics temperatures can go south on you real quick after the sun goes down especially where I like to go.
This thing is good for Mt. Everest. Or if you're up to mountain climbing. Good review.
Do you not have that many different types of double layer tents in America? It's very common here in the uk. Again you've made me want to go out and buy something else haha. Great video :)
With that dead air space would you be comfortable not using a rain fly or tarp overtop? With the weight of the tent it would be tough to do both
Nice tent, how's the ventilation?. I like more mesh under the rain fly. Seems a bit short also. I do well with the cheapo tents under 100 and they last for years with proper use and care.
Not much ventilation.
They took a lesson from Hilleberg with their inner/outer connecting sections.
Before you check out the bunker check out the scorpion 3 lot more room
Do u think that u could just use the rainfly as a lighter weight shelter?
You could do that.
whats the pack hanging on the tree. looks like a solid pack. Also do you think this tent is worth the hefty price tag? Keep it up PM101
Excellent vid Chris. Was wondering if the Scorpion 2, tent/fly, needs to be water proofed and/or seam sealed?ThanksGT
I prefer a much bigger tent for me and my lady. Gives us more space to "move around." Lol. This would be perfect for just me on my solo trips
How was your head room while sitting at the door... for cooking ect...
Looks like it would be possible to let the inner stay connected to the outer tent. And save some work when putting it up. Have you tried that? Great video again! / Krister
Krister Berglund yes I’d say leave the inner attached. Hilleberg tents are similar style and I think they come already attached from the factory. They have a different pole system (outer poles and clips rather than sleeves) but are the pinnacle of bomb proof tents IMO.
seen a frost river pak, maybe.. if it is wow, what size is it. jr or ilse royle?
Is it worth the price and will it last in long term?
Thanks for the review. I like how it looks and the design looking at it from the outside but looking at the inside I think its too small. I would have liked to see just the tent part set up without the rain fly on it. It reminds me of the Eureka Pinnacle tent Ive been using for over a decade now. I like that one cause when its not raining I can just use the tent and it has an open mesh ceiling and a lot of ventilation.
It does look more substantial than the pinnacle and the scorpion does seem like it would be a better winter tent. If I did more winter camping I might consider the snug pack. That vestibule part is a good feature, On the pinnacle I can keep gear and boots under it and covered but out of the rain.
thanks for the review.
You can't set it up without the outer fly. The poles are in the fly. The inner tent is one piece and hangs by the toggles that connect it.
Yeah. i think thats why thats totally a four season tent over what I own. I was thinking though. if one wanted to just use the rain fly without hooking the tent up into it that would make a really great shelter if one didn't need a tent with the netting? I think for people who are more into real deal type stuff that in reality is the tent to have after thinking about it. It really does look like it would be much more substantial for all season camping now Ive thought about it. It does seem better for bad weather but yeah. I wouldn't want to share it with another dude. Not that theres anything wrong with that? Yeah. I would tell anyone not a woman its a one person tent.
earthbrown8 I'm going to have to do another video with just the outer part as a shelter.
This will probably be stifling in the middle of summer.
Chris,
I watched this video with great interest. I don't know if I mentioned it to you but a lot of my EDC/GHB items were stolen prior to Thanksgiving. Thanks to all the good Friday sales and some family presents I am almost back up to speed. I am now getting ready to buy a replacement tent and I am just about ready to pull the trigger on the Snugpack Scorpion I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia so we really don't get super severe winter weather and was wondering if you had any problems with the tent? On a scale of one to ten is it worth purchasing or should I be looking at others? I don't do a lot of winter camping but like late fall and early spring getaways. I value your opinion and your thoughts before I spend a lot of money. By the way I agree with you about all the knife and flashlight reviews. I like your reviews for the simple reason you show how it works and not just from a table top. Thanks Ken T
+Ken T Hey man. I am from Williamsburg and currently live in VA Beach. I used to camp quite often but all my buddies moved (military). Hit me up if you want to check out some of the spots I know where people leave you alone and you can use your gear.
Ken T. I used to live in Hampton Roads, Va. and I'm not surprised your gear got stolen. That place is loaded with thieves. Glad you were able to replenish most of your gear, but it sucks that you had to. Hope you have better luck this time around.
Where do you go camping at around central Ohio?
Have you used this tent for summer camping? I'm wondering just how hot it would be in it.
Have you had any experiance with larger tents. I am looking for a decent tent for family camping. I dont want anything large and luxurious but large enough for 4 people to sleep comfortable. I figured I will set up one of the tarp tents like you have shown for gear and whatnot. I just want to see someone of the same mindset give a review on a family tent. I maybe better off getting one of the outpost style tents but I also dont want to spend a fortune on one either. Thanks for any suggestions you have.
That tiny tent is that big rolled up?
Do you think you could fit two large dogs in it with you? Kinda hard to tell just by looking at the video
Can you get in and out of the tent in the rain without filling the tent with water? From the pictures it is hard to see if the door covers the inside liner.
It's a bathtub style flooring and the lip comes up about 4"-6". The vestibule extends beyond it so as long as you are taking off your shoes in vestibule and leaving in there you shouldn't get soaked.
Any experienced camper knows if it's raining and your clothes get wet while outside its impossible to keep it 100% dry.
This tent works great. I highly recommend.
Pretty sure Proforce is just a distributor? Both Snugpak and Multimat are UK companies. Multimat HQ is ~25 miles away from here.
Proforce is just the US distributor.
Yes. I might have described it differently, but they they are who you get that stuff through here in the US.
What pack is hanging on the tree?
Looks like a decent 4 season tent that , by its pole configuration and fly shape, will withstand high winds. BUT, if you need it to withstand a heavy snow load you absolutely MUST place an additional pole longitudinally from the center of the front arch pole to the X of the other two side poles.
WHY? Because that relatively flat space on the top will collect a lot of snow and sag a lot. How do I know this. I have a North Face Tadpole tent with exactly the same pole configuration and in a 2 foot overnight snow it sagged a lot!
I have a Tarptent SCARP 2. BUT... I had to modify it by shortening the optional crossing poles and placing them beneath the fly. Also I had to add 4 fly hem loops which are now a factory option. With its new custom heavy duty main pole and 4 guy lines it will easily withstand gusts to 60 mph. (my own test experience).
However Hilleberg of Sweden makes THE very best winter tents. But they are "spendy".
Will it fit 2 people + gear?
Chris; I've seen your Snugpack tent reviews. Very good. Did you do a review of the 3-person model? Either way, the black interior is the ONLY thing that makes no sense. I'd really like to see you do review of either the 2 or 3-person version, but use some pieces of reflective Mylar on the inside walls or roof? This wouldn't cause condensation if done in pieces but would make a huge difference in lighting, heat, and overall ability to see vs. pitch black. Some higher end tents use yellow, beige, or lighter colors for that very reason. Snugpack tents are excellent! But you always tweak and modify things and that would helpful to a lot of your subs IMHO. Please do give that a try as it would be dead easy for someone like you to modify. Thanks in advance for any consideration of that so we can all compare the differences.
Wm.~
Well, it makes perfect sense in some scenarios so there are positives for the black interior. Backpacking in Scandinavia in summer, you're going to get a good sleep with that when otherwise the long days of light are going to play havoc waking campers in the night and very early morning in lighter green / orange tents or tarps (speaking from past experience of Norway in Summer), unless wearing eye blinds.
Prior to buying it, my main concern about the black though had been that it would hold heat like an oven. Based on then using it for 4 months in the middle east and southern europe in early and late summer though, not anymore than any other tent.
Infact, the way it cut 'out' light was often a plus. After all, the black goat hair tents used by Bedouin in places like the Kingdom of Jordan, have that benefit too (albeit with high and massive inner space of course, so that air can circulate far more).
What I can say is that I've been under light material greenish tarps in hot areas where their semi transparency meant the heat and light of strong sunlight beats right through the material onto you in pitches where no secondary shelter is possible to obtain, making it feel even hotter. In the Snugpak 2, I could pitch it in desert areas and it provided respite from the glaring sun and from the direct heat of that. I'm not saying the tent was 'cold' , but these other factors can be taken into account. Overall, I would say I slept better in this tent than in any other one I've owned, due to it emulating the conditions of a bedroom with curtains drawn tightly to block light.
What was the weight for the entire thing?
This looks like it would trap snow on top which might be a problem
5 lbs for a four season tent is not bad. All 2 person tents are tight for 2, no one likes it but it is a standard.
Cool looking setup, but I wonder, looks like it would be a condensation monster.
Will find out as I continue to use it over the course of the year.
PREPAREDMIND101 how's tent holding up?
Funny... I'm actually planning on using it tomorrow night for the first time in forever.
I've used his tent for a year and even though condensation does happen shes beautifully designed to just about be perfect with ventilation to keep it out. Being in South Wales in the UK with the extremely windy mountains I use this tent as it is beautifully streamlined to be able to put up with the harsh mountaintop and valley winds.
Thanks Chris, Nice presentation ,I bought the Bunker from SnugPac but have not gotten out with it due to medical complications but I'll get out soon I'm 6'4" so I know where I'm Sleepin LOL I'm sure the Bunker will sleep me and my girl friend and leave enough room for one of her girl friends Yeeha Thanks for the Review
Does a bottle of lube come with that tent?
Lube should be part of your basic kit anyway. Jk
How tall are you? Will this work for a 6' tall person?
200 dollars...that's equal to two nights at Holiday Inn...
thanks for the math lesson, but with the tent you have a place to go after the second night !
This is a longer term investment though. Hotels are a one time purchase
They should call it "Snugpak broke back mountain edition"
Hey Chris, just see your review on the scorpion 2, had to go out and buy one. Love your reviews and also you dry sense of humor. I will have to stop watching your vids, its costing me too much money, lol....Kindest Regards Ant
What is your thoughts on the bk5?
I think it has little to do with this tent. Good knife, just not for me.
2 man tent, yeah if they're camping at broke back mountain
i have tarp...
Hi, does this tent have a mesh door?
Piotrek1985 no
Just got a response from the manufacturer of the tent. They say it does have a mesh door and some other videos confirm that so how come you say that it doesn't? If you don't know don't say.
Piotrek1985 if you knew the answer, why'd you ask the question?
Piotrek1985 and why comment a question on a vid thats years old, google really is a gift from the gods
Coz I hadn't known it back the when I asked it.
The North Face Starbust copy
It's a 2 person tent,, not a 2 men tent.
So yes it's meant for a man and woman.
