  • What are the best things to eat before, during and after a trail running race or ultra? And what's the weirdest food you can get at an aid station?
Last month I was at the Pikes Peak Marathon in Colorado interviewing some of the world’s best mountain athletes about their race nutrition strategies, including race winner Dakota Jones, Skyrunning champion Emelie Forsberg and coaches Max King and Sage Canaday.
Also in this film, find out which food Emelie really didn’t like, plus, I meet two regular American racers who blew my mind with their food choices. I still don’t really know if they’re joking or not, so if you do, let me know in the CZcams comments below this film.
Subscribe if you haven’t already so you don’t miss out on my next film,I’m going to be LIVE at the Ring of Steall Skyrace this Saturday 15th of September, it’s the 5th in the Golden Trails Series before the grand finale.
So I’ll be chatting to the world’s best mountain runners like Kilian Jornet and Marc Lauenstein, Ruth Croft, Laura Orgue and Holly Page.
Look out for the timings on social media and join me if you can!

Pickle juice is super common and is available at many ultra aid stations here in the USA. In fact, it is easy to find individual shot sized bottles for sale at running/biking shops. Mustard, strange. The BEST thing I take for cramps is Tums antacid tablets, about 1,000 - 1,500 mg per hour after the first hour or two. My eating strategy during an ultra is, eat anything that looks remotely appealing, my body craves what it needs. (But yes, try a variety of things in training so you know what to avoid.)

both pickles/pickle juice and mustard are excellent electrolyte sources, i also do pickled beats/juice.. as it also opens up the veins as the beats are also a vasodilator. spicy pickled beans would be fun too.. something different but good.

Great video Claire. I am not a Gel lover and prefer real food, peanut butter on cut squared white bread, baby food direct from the pouch to suck out when running. Banana when you can get one is tops and also coconut milk! Tuna rolls when aid stations do them very welcome. So many nights before a race I have been in a strange place with no restaurants so it ends up being what you can get.

Keep it porridge for race morning though. Adding a banana gives a decent glycemic spread. During the race eat before you think you need to. Your body can only be fuelled for 90 minutes of hard exercise so During the race eat at least once an hour.

Hello Claire, I've used pickle juice in a marathon before; although it didn't agree with my stomach. There was an aid with about 15 liters of it in a bucket, just ladling it into cups for anyone. Mustard, I've never done but it sounds right containing vinegar, mustard, and turmeric. My bartender days can attest that Jameson with a pickle juice chaser is a winner.

Some people think the sour taste of pickles or mustard simulates nerves in the mouth to inhibit cramps, rather than salts per se. Regardless of why, never worked for me, but lots of people swear by them.

Pickle Juice is real. This is how the idea for gatorade came about. A University Football Team in Florida (which is very very hot and humid) used to have their players drink the juice from the barrel of pickles (It has tons of salt and other minerals in it that help you stay hydrated). They noticed that they were able to sustain better during practices and games. This team was the Florida Gators. Eventually a bunch of food scientists created gatorade ( plenty of salt and minerals to help you stay hydrated) as an ode to this teams way of staying hydrated

    • @cyclingfreak56
      @cyclingfreak56 Před 5 lety +1

Gatorade is garbage but cute story. It's not salt and other minerals bro, it's sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium! And all 4 are necessary!
I've been using Vega Hydrator forever for endurance cycling in Florida and I highly recommend it before and after for events 4 hrs or less and during for longer events.

Here in Japan they serve pickled plums at the aid stations. The flesh is very soft, nearly melting in your mouth, so you can easily spit out the pit. Its not only about the ingredients but also that your body is able to absorb the good stuff fast and easy. Like bananas, their fructose has to be broken down into glucose by the body first, so it will take time.

It's the acetic acid in pickle juice and mustard that stops cramping, there's actually been studies done. I was wary of it when I first started, but it works wonders. Plus, if your body actually needs it, it tends not to taste as bad to you.

Not at all! Look I'll admit when I was a 20 or 30 something athelite I used to get away with eating a lot of garbage ( nutrition 411 was very hard to come by 40 yrs ago too) however science of sport nutrition as well as nutrition in general has made crystal clear the connection between performance and proper nutrition. So I'm thinking how much better these people who cavalierly admit to eating whatever whenever would perform? Also if I were a sponsor of someone who didn't finish top 10 on a regular basis who brags on CZcams about not caring or not knowing the proper diet for a endurance athlete I'd be thinking about sponsoring someone who at least tries to eat right!
      czcams.com/video/_ZxVoLHojws/video.html
This video is not any kind of comprehensive example of a sports nutrition program but there's many out there, I do my own research and so should everyone else. What I found particularly cringeworthy was hearing people who probably train more than I do being a old non sponsored athlete talk about not caring what they eat or much worse not knowing why they're eating.
I would also point anyone in doubt in Rich Roll's (CZcams Podcast) direction!
