  • A majestic lion nicknamed “Leo” adorns the screen, framed by a halo-like film strip. The beast then gives a deep and bellowing roar that echoes through the minds of everyone watching. The unforgettable MGM logo has graced countless movies, from The Wizard of Oz to Poltergeist to the many James Bond films. Over this remarkable history, the logo has undergone major technological updates, such as the introduction of sound and the dawn of color. Leo himself has also changed several times, each lion to play the mighty mascot unique in their own way. But despite these alterations, the core design has remained virtually the same since its earliest appearance in 1917. This video charts the rise of the legendary MGM logo, a story that begins with a little studio called Goldwyn Pictures, which would soon merge with two other companies to become Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. You’ll learn tons of obscure facts, like the names of all five “official” Leos and their surprising backstories, told with fascinating historical photographs and rarely seen versions of the logo. Plus, I’ll dismantle those pesky urban myths that have cropped up over the years (hint: Leo may have looked ferocious, but he never mauled anyone). So let’s bow to the King of the Jungle - and the King of Movie Mascots - in this episode of Into The Logo-Verse.
"Into the Logo-Verse" is a series of mini documentaries exploring the history behind the most iconic movie logos of all time. Discover the fascinating stories and little-known facts that provide a whole new perspective on these often overlooked gems.

The Wizard of Oz was the only MGM VHS I owned when the home viewing rights were transferred to Warner Bros! And I remember as a kid seeing the MGM logo on Cartoon Network at the start of Tom & Jerry shorts.

I just watched this last year, and it was nice! Now, I came back just to say that today (April 17, 2024) is the 100th anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)!!!

By the way, that story about Leo was gentle. If most lions were like that with other humans, they would be my favorite animal.

Interesting story, and MGM would be my pick for the most scariest logo of all time. It’s right behind the Screen Gems “S From Hell”, the Viacom “V of Doom” and the Oz Films logo among other scary logos of the time. But this iconic MGM logo is still scary, and various lions shown in this iconic logo were nightmare fuel.
There were some variants of the MGM logo that were shown in cartoons. The Tanner one was shown all of Tom & Jerry and other cartoons by Tex Avery, and the animated Jackie logo was only seen in “Petunia National Park” with the Captain and the Kids.
MGM also had its own record label which ran from 1947 until 1975 when it was bought by Polydor Records and kept the MGM Records name under Polydor until 1980 when the label folded into Polydor Records following the merger of United Artists and became MGM/UA Entertainment in 1982.

Maybe it's just me, but my eyes see traces of Slats, Jackie and Tanner in the CGI Leo.

At 3:28, so that is how Metro Pictures Inc. and Louis B. Mayer Entertainment got their mascot logos before the 1924 merger with Goldwyn Studios.

I'm going to miss Leo but the new logo ain't too bad.
Edit: Also I kinda like the logo seen in front of 2001.
Edit 2: The publicity photos of Leo with Alfred Hitchcock are adorable.
Edit 3: Also MGM has done a few anniversary logos before and after their 70th (although their only on screen anniversary logo after was their 75th and their 90th was only a print logo).

@@michaelcahillpresents Thanks. New Line also works. Their first logo was from 1973-1987, their second one was from early 1987 and found on Dream Warriors, Their 3rd was from 1987-1994, with the prototype of the 4th being in late 1994 on New Nightmare and The Mask, The 4th making its debut in 1994 and lasting through 2010, while the 5th was used from 2010-2021, and the 6th has been used since 2021. The first was revamped for 2019's "The Kitchen", and the 3rd was revamped for 2023's House Party Reboot.

Um, metro picture's mascot is a parrot. Not a peacock.

Fascinating material, but I could only get through it with the sound on mute. Hiring someone else to narrate would improve your video considerably. It would make a world of difference.
