The truth is vocal control is something that every singer wants, but it's very hard to define. Vocal control is a catch-all term that refers to being able to sing with all of the singing fundamentals and even being able to apply them to songs.
In today's video, I'm going to show you my definition of vocal control, and give you seven different exercises to improve your vocal control and apply it to a song.
In my experience, vocal control is the ability to master the singing basics or fundamentals. But rather than being vague, the singing fundamentals I’m referring to are as follows:
In the first step, you will learn to improve your vocal control by singing in tune. Singing In Tune is the first step in gaining vocal control, because if you can't sing in tune, then you won't be able to sing any song well. So my first exercise for Singing In Tune is to sing the 5-tone count scale where you're singing a five tone major scale on the words one, two, three, four, five, four, three, two, one.
The next step to improve your vocal control is to sing in the different vocal registers. In this case, we'll start by singing in chest voice. Chest voice refers to the notes at the bottom part of your voice and it's the first place that you have to start if you're singing breathy. In the second exercise, I'm going to give you a five tone count scale where you replace each note of the scale with the word “gug”, as in gut.
The next step to improving your vocal control is to sing in your head voice. Head voice refers to the range of notes at the top part of your voice. In the third exercise, you're going to sing an octave and a half arpeggio on the word “wee”, like week. This is going to help you release into your head voice.
The next step to improving your vocal control is to blend these different vocal registers together into a mixed voice. Mixed voice means being able to sing from the bottom to the top of your voice and back down without any breaks or strain. In other words, every note has some chest voice and every note has some head voice. In the 4th exercise, I'm going to have you sing an octave repeat arpeggio with a bratty “Nay”.
The next step in improving your vocal control is to begin singing with a resting larynx. The bottom line is that when you're first learning how to sing, it's very common to start singing with a very high larynx. This takes some time to improve since the larynx is just moving in a nervous system reaction to what you're singing. However, one of my favorite exercises to start relaxing your larynx is to sing with an “uh” vowel as in “other”. In this exercise, you're going to sing an octave and a half arpeggio on the word “mum”, like “mummy”.
The next step to improving your vocal control is to sing with vocal effects like vibrato and legato. In this case, I'm going to teach you to sing with vibrato because vibrato is a vocal effect that will really help you balance your voice and gets used all the time and singing. In the sixth exercise, I'm going to give you an exercise to find vibrato by pulsating your diaphragm.
The final step to gaining vocal control over your voice is to sing songs. However, you'll notice that singing songs is much more difficult than just singing a vocal exercise. That's because things in songs are constantly changing, the melody, vowels, dynamics, are changing all the time. So in the final exercise, you're going to sing part of the song that's giving you a hard time on a friendly vocal exercise. Simply take one of the exercises that was working really well for you earlier, and then sing The Melody of the song on that exercise. Finally, go back to singing the lyrics but try to keep some of the same feeling you got on the exercise.
Getting more vocal control is something that every singer wants. However it takes a little bit of time to develop. Continue working with these exercises every day and you'll be amazed how much your vocal technique improves.

Hmm wonder what people did before vocal coaches were a thing?? You really think Bobby Hatfield had a vocal coach when he sang unchained melody? I highly doubt it.
You can actually learn a lot stepping outside a genre that you normally sing and then try that, I sing things from Adel, Lady Gaga, Muse, Megan Trainor, etc etc. I listen mostly to heavy metal and hard rock but I wanted to sing with correct technique and I know most metal and rock singers do not use proper technique when distorting the sound.
I still love the way Matt Bellamy from Muse does some of his distortion, he literally swallows the mic and uses the breakup that happens when singing loudly into a mic that close to his advantage.
If we settled for we always have to have a teacher then electricity wouldn't exist with a ton of other inventors who thought outside the box and discovered new things. Did Nikola Tesla have an electrical engineer when he made his inventions? Nope.

I've gotta be candid: I had never really given much thought to start singing, or even maximizing my natural voice until I had tumbled discovered a plethora of indisputably inspiring videos from a fairly popular CZcams channel called "Ramsey Voice Studio". I'm probably not the first guy to admit this, but Ramsey, your voice is absolutely incredible!!! I really am amazed at the quality of your voice through all of those training tutorials you've given us. They motivate me to be honest with myself that I am a total beginner and that if I've got to start somewhere on my journey to singing, then it should be something nice and effective. I suppose that's why I've found you. And fine, I'll say it lol... I had given a lot of thought to being exceptional at singing, but by virtue of my very poor self esteem at the time, psychological development, and reliance on everyone else's validation (this was a long time ago, I've made up for my mistakes) I was discouraged to do so... But not anymore. Through gaining new insights about myself, new perceptions, training, and a total awareness of my abilities, I realized that I can sing, better yet maybe become a great singer, and I don't care about what others may think. I've come all of this way, why quit it for past idea, why not give it my best to be the best that I can become at something. So thanks again man... I will continue to delve into more of videos on finding your vocal range, learning how to sing certain notes, singing tones and more. I'm definitely look into buying that new program of yours. I gotta tell you... I'm almost in tears. You have no idea how bad a singer I am. I have extreme voice cracks, bad sound in general, etc. To be fair, I have no knowledge of music/singing, as I've never been introduced to these things - aside from when you're little in school - and I definitely wasn't fortunate enough to be given the natural gift of singing either, lol. After the mandatory classes as a kid, you often lose what knowledge you had because it isn't further incorporated. Not to mention, you most certainly weren't taught all these key things to know with using your voice either - but of course, at that young of an age it's only meant to be an early introduction. I'm sure technique isn't really the concern for little ones at that point. After watching about three hours of your videos, ending on this one.... the improvement is drastic. I can hear marks of a singer's voice when I try this song, thanks to you breaking it down with the techniques. I am astonished. I obviously have a lot more practicing to do, but I kid you not, when I did my first recorded attempt (in order to give myself feedback) I was stunned. It did not sound like the usual me at all. No one could guess that was my voice, I assure you! haha. It's crazy, I was actually belting out clear notes without my voice breaking and cracking like usual. I am beyond grateful. I'm a passionate person in all that I do and so when I try to sing along with the radio or give worship to God, the sound isn't always the best. I can do it well enough to be hidden with the music and vocals from the track sometimes, but not always. This has instantly made me more confident and just extremely happy.
I haven't reviewed all your videos yet, but a suggestion would be to take an entire song and break it down like you did here for this part, with suggestions to work through it so that we could learn to complete an entire song. I think that would be fun, especially from you. You are brilliant and make it fun to learn. You have a gift to teach and thank you for sharing that with the rest of us. God bless!

Think neutral larynx position, stop raising it and lowering it just leave it neutral, if you feel it raise start over. It will get you to feel it faster and know what to do. I sing mostly in a mixed voice because I am currently on a MUSE kick and Matt Bellamy uses a neutral larynx position to get a mixed voice in some of his songs. A neutral position is where larynx sits at rest, it makes a mixed voice easier to do.
Listen to the song "Uprising" in the chorus Matt is using solely a mixed voice, how you can tell is the notes are pretty high and you have to enter head voice to get to those notes, but when done only in a head voice it does not have the same power as the song. So you know there is some chest voice in there too, so it makes it more powerful despite being higher notes.
If you can get that chorus to sound the same when you do it then you got it. Also listen to his vibrato and falsetto they are simply beautiful.

hii i wanna learn how to sing! i can do really good falsetto notes, my voice is naturally squeaky and i tend to stay in my head voice when i sing. but when it comes to runs, vibratos, and singing with my chest. i struggle a lot! i think my voice has potential and i really hope your videos can help me out. i subbed! ❤️

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy Před 2 lety +6

Lol What is vocal control?? Easy answer is Mathew Bellamy. Thats vocal control, perfect pitch and volume control (often missed and not talked about), falsetto, vibrato and closing off vowels for better tone all in 1 guy. Study him and you get vocal control. Listen to Muse and tell me that isn't perfection vocally.
There are tons of singers to study that can develop certain techniques, Matt Bellamy is the only person I can think of that tries to use every vocal technique ever used and therefore its a 1 stop lesson. I am not saying you will become a phenomenal singer just using him, I am saying you will simply learn more from him than most other singers because he isn't afraid to step outside of his own comfort zone to try a new sound.
You still have to listen and pay attention to lessons like this one, I sing a lot of Muse, I am still here for the video because I never accept I know everything about singing, I always assume I have more to learn even if I have heard it before because I always look for some small detail I may have missed. For instance it all clicked for me when Ken Tamplin said to get Matt Bellamy's style down well you have to understand he is leaving his larynx in a neutral position, details like that.

Your videos are very good! I took lessons remotely and feel like I made progress. You explained in one of your videos that confidence has so much to do with being a good singer. I am still struggling with that somewhat but have made huge progress. I think what's holding me there is I got stuck (and am still stuck) with ear training and not knowing how to read music and sing as I read it. My confidence issues are throwing me into safe notes and I can't seem to hear myself playing it safe. Do you have any guidance or can you do a video on how to learn to read music and apply it to singing? Thank you so much!
