Yeah it is a little annoying that they don't seem to credit the original bands in these covers on youtube. Trivium did the same thing with their songs and everyone thought it was new original music by them.
Mastodon covered this back in 2006. Kerrang bought different bands together to cover different songs off the album and was called "Master of Puppets Remastered." They may have rerecorded or remastered it since but this isn't the first time this has seen the light of day.
This was also the first time I'd heard the outro played cleanly enough to hear each instrument completely... ...and I bought Master of Puppets on tape back in '87.
Most of the tracks on Medium Rarities have been out... Personally, I was hoping for a bit more new material, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a new album.
Mastodon does an amazing job of recreating the originals, with a bit of their added sound. But, I would love to hear them go balls-out and Mastodon-ify some of these old treasures.

I'm happy they did this. As a guitar player I feel the bass needed to be turned up during the first climax 1:30. and during the outro. I imagine there were good reasons why they didn't, it's just those parts didn't feel as impactful. This was still really cool.

They just aren't quite hitting the bends right here, they movement of the notes isn't like the original, and it def sounds worse. Live Metallica probably they aren't hitting it quite as closely as they did in the studio as it's harder to hear the tiny differences in pitch to make it perfectly harmonise, with all the the noise of a gig. And yeah as mentioned they also can't add the additional guitar layers live.

Orion is my fav metallica song and this is the best cover ive heard that adds its own flair without copying but still staying true to the form.
