Watching this while my heeler finally naps.
When I firmly tell my 3 1/2 mo old Blue Heeler "Don't Bite Me!" she pauses, looks at me, snarls her lip, and begins to bark and jump all around me... but does not bite me!
She understands what I want and obeys... but with great protest.
Lol, my blue heeler does the same thing. I use a firm “no” and he just stares at me like “how dare you?” and hops around me while telling me off 😂
With Sparky, my Red Heeler, I used a combo. I always had a toy, or if he grabbed my hand or arm, I'd whimper......i didn't think it would work, but it did! He would put his tongue between his teeth and my hand!!!! So smart! As he is older, I say "leave it'" and that works too. At 6 mos he quit biting. 95% !

@frances4797 yes we both had that too. They don't realize that our skin is tender compared to their fur.
But, they'll catch on. The toy replacement for your arm really works, lol. They live to play, herd you playfully around the house too. I'm glad I could help!! Oh those teething toys are good to play with them. I didn't leave them alone with them tho. They chew thru stuff, lolol!!

If I remember right, when our ACD got to an age where she was pushing boundaries by biting/heeling, a strong negative marker (almost growly), tied with a timeout room not used for anything else, worked. MF was a demon for a bit though. Teaching bite inhibition separately was just as important.
I call my red healer the red snapper. He is responding to me redirecting his behavior. Thanks for the video.
My corgi (now 6 yo) used to "boop" slow crosswalkers when we were crossing the street, definitely great tips as usual Jack and Cowboy and company are cute are heck as well!
Your videos are helpful. I gotta blue heeler that's about 9 months now. He's a great dog loyal and always at my side. Knows a ton of tricks like sit, lay down, roll over, bark on command , go to the kennel and he was easy to house train. The 1 thing we have had some trouble with is his nipping. Sometimes it's not even hard hea just playing I think but your videos are helpful. Been watching since we got him. If we get Pancho to stop biting then I can say we really have no trouble at all . This breeds not for everyone but if you put the work in its definitely worth it in the end.
Some dogs grow out of nipping, some need more training. Redirecting with toys or even food sometimes..trick them into sitting and doing a trick when they start to nip. Other options are ignoring, sometimes they need a firm correction though to get the idea.
This is how my corgi puppy is! Perfect dog minus the nipping and chewing on me and my daughter

I take my Heelers to trails all the time! After work.. Anyway they do great even off leash...as well as home setting...

I have a female Texas Heeler I got from a rescue at 8 months old. She is 21 months old now. Great dog.
I’ve had my (border collie/heeler/German shepherd) since he was 8 weeks old. He’s 13 weeks old now & is great buddies with my American Bulldog that he adores, but is relentless! He’s learned “gentle” when he hanging off my ABs face, it works most of the time. NO & GENTLE have been working…definitely a velociraptor 🤣
Yup. Distractions with toys when young. Leashed if way out of control. Consistent! Not much issue now that he is near 2yo, but I still have to remind him with a "no" when going up stairs and he follows! *Love the drool before feeding...I get that too!
My three month old red/blue is a nipper and chewer, im glad to hear it can get better haha

I wish I found this when my dog was a puppy! My ACD actually is more dingo his body and joints are like that of a dingo and dingos do not have the same body as a dog. The nipping and biting jumping and biting is still a problem though
The shelter dog is 1yr old and is not neutered yet…. I have had to block multiple nips but I am sure this won’t be good for any one if I can’t get this under control
I have another dog, a boxer, my 15 weeks old ACD nips at when playing fetch. Not interested in his ball but in the boxer's ball.
How do you recommend dealing with dogs nipping other animals? My 1.5 yr old Aussie started nipping our horses legs and became super reactive to other dogs / nipping them. This started at 8months old. There are very few dogs he hasn’t nipped at (cattle dogs, other aussies). He used to be great with all dogs and we would go play at the dog park all the time. Then my roommate had a reactive dog stay with us and things seemed to change after that. He loved our friends dog but now acts like he is going to go crazy and attack him. I just bought a basket muzzle today. I don’t want to use it, but I honestly am scared to take him anywhere in public or on hikes where we will run into other dogs. I can’t afford to pay a trainer to work with him. Do you know any alternative options other than a muzzle?
Did you do any desensitizing for loud sounds? I've read that herding dogs are particularly sensitive to that. Our experience has been about 50/50 on ACDs scared to death of thunder and fireworks, vs not.
Did my best to desensitize to noises and still do but he still really doesn't like things like vacuums or leaf blowers.
We have a 3 year old heelers who doesn’t bite/nip at heels. Now we just adopted a 1 year old heeler/corgi and she keeps nipping my dogs heels, and my 3 year old is getting tired of it. Now I’m trying to find out how to stop her from nipping him.

Doesn’t do it all, if he gets too excited and his teeth even touches skin he immediately feels sorry and tries to apologize lol. They are pretty smart you just have to work with them.

Nicknamed her "demon dog" because her actual name, "ANGEL", well you know lol. Getting better slowly but surely. Leash indoors, lots of toys, and playing with my 7 year old min pin seems to be helping. Daily car rides too

IMPORTANT QUESTION PLEASE!!: Just got my late pops (grandfather)18 month old red stumpytail cattle dog. He nips all the time, slowly he is learning no and I usually tell him to sit when he starts and give him a treat when he does. But my problem is when I try to leave him, he nips my clothes or worse, my ponytail to hold me there so I don't leave, it makes me feel so bad but also I have no idea how to fix this 😢
My maggie is now nipping me when I try to go back in the house . Blood and sore. I didn't know what to do I just went in and left her out for abit.how
How funny I recently just adopted a Australian cattle dog and it’s name is cowboy and he’s the exact same color, except mine has it’s tail cut short 😢
I got Bubba when he was 5 months old. 3 months later, I'm in hell. He's the cutest, sweetest, little monster I've ever known. Training went well until last month. We came to visit family, saw my doc while here, diagnosed with breast cancer. We're staying with my mom, who contradicts everything I try to teach or reinforce. Bubba has now become a precision nipper, and quite the con man. I'm going to be in chemo soon, then surgery. I can't make him stop jumping on me. I don't know what to do about it. Does anyone have any suggestions????
Great video Jack, my ACD boy destroys his beds, bedding etc and anything that catches his eye.
Two questions: 1. When having a leash should it be attached to a collar or harness for better results? 2. Typically age this phase stops? Our heeler is 4 months
The only reason a harness should be used in my opinion is if you want your dog to pull something or strapping them in the the back of the truck. Other than that, useless and no control.
As for age, 4 months you are probably in the thick of this stage. Depends on how fast you can teach your dog the desired behavior. Some people can do it in few days. Others it takes a few months. Stick with it!

I have two Blue Heelers, and when they get super excited because I'm going to give them a treat, they want to nudge me and nip me. I think a good scolding is enough. They are very obedient wild animals.
I'm going to try and adopt a dog to 3 years old it says that he's had some training I didn't know about the nipping do you think if he's a three-year-old it's going to be hard to stop him from nipping? I'm still going to try to adopt him cuz these dogs are so smart and loyal. And I got patients so I work through it but to be interesting to hear your opinion on a 3yo
We adopted our ACD mix (46% heeler) when he was 4 months old. This is our first time owning anything remotely like him. Geddy 2 now, is super smart and will pick up tricks quickly and obedience when he wants. He recently was on prednisone for some anal gland issues. His aggressive herding seemed to dissipate while he was on the meds. Now that he is off of them, the aggression is back. The moment we turn out back on him, that’s when he goes for our legs. Any suggestions?
Possibly more exercise, couple of walks a day, even short ones are helpful. Benebones (my dog loves the Wishbone shaped one and the potato chip shaped) and a Squeaky Ball!
Hi can you help me train a RH not to whining and doing the little chirps when they want something? I have 2 black labs also who I trained perfectly. But Bailey the 1yr RH trains well seriously I think she is gaslighting me bec she never does the commands when I ask. Her eyes gaze over like she looking at something invisible. Lol. Can u help me with this. Thanks 😊
These dogs are much more anxious than a breed like a lab. My first recommendation is more exercise - a tired dog won't be as anxious and whining at your feet. Second is teaching "Place." This breed needs help settling down sometimes. I have another video on that.
This is my second red healer and the biting is getting better not gone yet but my issue is her when playing with out chocolate, lab she bites the tendons of the hind legs. Any ideas on that.

Fostering cattle dog from shelter. He’s a bit over the top and he nips and I find myself blocking face nips…. Any other suggestions
Try redirecting to a chew toy. (I’ve got a rescue dog that is mostly Blue Heeler, 1 year old) We have been redirecting to Benebone, a rope, or something like that. He loves a squeaky ball as well. Good Luck!👍

Then, your faulty appeal to authority, namely you and your infinitesimal experience with this hugely popular and prolific in dissimulation, of this exceptional race of dog! I’d suggest you ,HB, dropped that grass lycanthropy and study some serious kynology!

I own a rescue red heeler, about 2 yrs old. Just adopted him 3 months ago. He has a nasty habit of nipping smaller dogs when we meet on the hiking trail. How to discourage? Also he can be very protective of me, seems to “guard” me. If my other dog approaches (a golden) he may nip at her to “protect “ me. How to correct Jack? TY, Mark. PS this is my 3rd heeler but previous pups I got when just a puppies so I could train them from the beginning.
Hey Mark. Cowboy guards me too, they are a protective breed. Sometimes too much so. Need to make sure they understand that you don't need protecting from other pack members as you are the alpha and nipping your golden is NOT allowed. In regards to nipping passing dogs, two methods - one, a correction from a leash or e collar ( i only recommend using an e collar if you put the time into learning how to properly use one ) to make sure he knows its not allowed. Two, sit somewhere busy were a lot of dogs pass and every time one is about to whip out a treat and distract him. Have him in a focused command ( sit or down etc ) before he even realizes the dog is coming and keep his focus with the treat ( something really tasty like a hot dog ). you want them controlled before they see the dog. With reps this will help simply by desensitization. Hopefully this helps!

I have a rescue heeler that I also got at a older age that was a huge heel nipper! I first formed a bond with him (about 2 months) then started using corrections with a word that you use for something you never want them to do for me it’s a firm NO and a pop on the collar when he does something I absolutely do not want (nipping at people)
I think it’s just prey drive with smaller dogs. Mine was not allowed to play with small dogs unless they were super confident. She was a real stinker
