that is my main issue with Sennheiser. they make amazing headphones with an appropriate price, but then they make those cheap landfill shit that actually makes me hear shit about Sennheiser because someone bought one of those and now thinks Sennheiser is a terrible brand, and berates me for using a high end sennheiser upwards of 500 bucks
Their HD400s don't seem bad. The top-end is a little weak, but the difference $40 CAD makes in Sennheiser's build quality is definitely more than I expected. I'm shocked to see how awful the HD 206 were in the video.
Yeah, it definitely seems like a bad business move. I get that they have to have a huge difference between their $40 h/p's and their $400 ones but they're just shooting themselves in the foot by making the cheapest ones sound terrible.
I really like when it's the opposite. Someone I know was posting on instagram (like 10 years ago) about getting a pair of HD201s, which feels like a brag, but it's reeeeeally not.

Samson actually has a closed back version of the 850. The SR950 has a slightly different driver but are so very close, and I used to use them to listen to audiobooks while using a riding mower, did a great job blocking out the sound. I bought the Samsons after hearing how universally praised they were. I had my doubts, but they didn't let me down. They sound great. I use them when tracking instruments, and I DO use them as reference headphones for mixing. They're not my ONLY reference, I'm not insane, but they offer another perspective from my DT-770s and studio monitors.
Having said that, though, if you were strapped for cash, and they were your only headphones, I think you could use them for mixing and feel pretty confident about it.
I have those Sonys too, and they're pretty tuuuurible. I bought them at Walmart for ten freedom bucks about 8 years ago, because I was taking a flight the next day and didn't want any of my good headphones to get mangled, or lost (I HATED earbuds back then). I still have them, and I'm not even sure why. They're 100% landfill.
Those Sennheiser HD206 nuggets are pretty much identical to the HD201's I used to own. They were cheap and cheaply made, but I was pretty happy with them. Until they broke in 3 pieces when I accidentally sat on them. I must admit, I'd love to try some of the higher quality Sennies. I'm no audiophile, but watching your videos makes me want to try some more expensive headphones.
I still own a pair of HD180's I got way back in 2013, the "predecessor" to both 20X's (they are literally identical).
Can't say I hate them, I'm probably the odd one out here, but I kinda prefer the unmuffled, flatter sound profile, all the extra cable is still wrapped with the wire it had in the box, fake leather is definitely crap though, but once it _disintegrated_ and forcefully vacuumed off the 'phones arguably turned out better, lol.
I actually bought a pair of 201s for my first audio editing class in college, since our teacher requested headphones with relatively high frequency ranges and flat sound. I wore the cable like a belt to avoid dragging it around. Magically, they survived until I made the mistake of lending them to my then 8 year old sister.

Dt770s are classics. Good for everything. Got a nice V shaped sound.
+1 on the DT770. Can't recommend them enough! Also, having spare parts on demand is a huge bonus, if anything breaks (which I highly doubt due to their ruggedness) you can just order a part and replace it. The best bang for buck in my books.
Kindof same story here but with some extra steps, once or twice every year i had to buy a new headset that i usually didnt spend more than $30-50 on, since they would all break. Gave up this lifestyle and bought a pair of Sennheiser HD598, still use them after 6 years!
Good headphones make a world of difference. From music to even just listening to people talk. It changes the entire experience. People don't frequently think about it because most people just buy something ok and move on.
Good headphones & good stereos are life changing if you really appreciate music. It's insane.
@@TheHareidGamer yeah what people don't realize is if you spend more money it's actually way better in the long run, you get better sound so that's one thing, but they also will last you MUCH longer than a cheapo set of "headphones". They can last you 10+ years if you take café of them, at the same time I know some people who buy 3 headphones a year because they break so much lol
I just ordered a set of Samson SR850s after watching this. And you got yourself a new subscriber. I LOVE the way you present this information in such a way that it isn't mind numbingly boring, or full of meaningless babble. Great stuff!

My brother has a pair of them and they sound great. They are V shaped sounding but in a really tastefully done way. They sound better than my DT 770 pros and are only slightly less detailed than my Grado SR60X just with extra bass. Plus they are extremely comfortable and you don’t have to deal with finicky adjusting mechanisms since they are self adjusting.

I don't know why, but I often saw an L/R switch on the right side of the headphones at school. Does it toggle between Mono (L) and Stereo (R) sound or something?
I mean the whole "non-removable dual cables" thing is mostly because it's easier to design a cheap pair of headphones that way (expecially foldable ones like the Sonys) since the headband doesn't need to house the wire that connects the two sides really.
Not to mention they can potentially reuse the cables from their earbuds which is exactly what they do with the mic version of this model.
Also I use those for university (The fact that they fold is nice for my bag and I find them more comfortable than my Earpods-like earbuds) and eh I mean they sound all right, the top end is missing a bit but I guess that makes them a fairly mellow pair, they are also quite good with EQ.
I've had the noise cancelling version of those Sony headphones for 8 years now. The pleather pads are cracking and falling apart at this point, but having only paid $30 for them, they've had a good run as my office headphones. That cheap cable looks like it would break, but I've been using them 8 hours a day 5 days a week for years and I haven't heard a single crackle out of it. The noise cancelling is good at drowning out A/C noise and office chatter, but they'd struggle with anything louder than that.
I want to replace them with a good pair of over ears like the AKG K240s, but I don't know if the newer ones are worth the money, seeing as how they're a samsung product and made in China now. if the new AKG K240s are essentially a cheapened version of themselves, why not just get the Samson SR850s? Decisions, decisions.
@@IWasAllLikeG93 The AKG K240s wouldn't be worth their money regardless of which pair you got to be entirely honest with you, nowadays the way to go is something like the K371s for example.
I actually love my sennheiser 206, though that may be because of my limited options, but compared to some of the other headphones (I don't remember the name, but they had "Xtreme Xplosions" written on the packaging) I had for a similar (~50$) price these are definitely the best sounding and most comfortable, I can wear these for a whole day without a headache.
try 201 with plucked pleather pad or just swap non pleather pada
or for heavy filtering use XD 100
I'd like to mention that I've been rocking Sennheiser's HD205, which I don't really feel are as bad as they say the 206 are! They are quite sturdy and the sound is alright although a bit mid-heavy. They are $75 and honestly they are good. For a little more you can get the HD280pro which I don't think they compete with at all though, the 280s are prob better sounding. Maybe the low-end sennies change was quite drastic when they sold the consumer grade portion of the company. :(

Thanks to your earlier review of the SR850s I bought a set and couldn't be happier. Well, almost. Maybe my ears are too big or something but they aren't quite as comfortable as I'd hoped, but it's only a little a discomfort after several hours of listening. These are one of the very few sets of cans I actually bought at retail, and that's saying something for me. I have literally several dozen sets of headphones, with most of them having been picked up at the Goodwill Outlet for $1.39/lb. Decent ones, too, not all no-name landfill material. Several sets of HD280s and other various Senny's, lots of Bluetooth sets from major manufacturers including Bose and Marshall and plenty of decent gaming headsets as well. Some needed a little repair or tweaking, but at that price I kind of expected that. There's also a nice pair of MDR-7506 Pros that I rescued from a dumpster, literally, when I worked next to an office that dealt in unclaimed luggage. The Avantree A9S was a pleasant surprise, and were my main wireless headphones until I snagged a set of AirPod Pros. None of these are really high-end, but it's a decent assortment, and if anything were to happen to them I wouldn't be angry or depressed about the financial hit.
And you are spot on when it comes to the stock Apple EarPods. They're really not bad at all, and depending on the recording the soundstage is amazing. I used to go into the office on Sundays and was generally the only one there. There were times when I was listening to some live recordings, usually stuph by Oregon, and would hear a noise off to the side. On several occasions I would get up and look around the empty office, thinking that the noise was coming from somewhere in the office and not from the recording.
There was one time I posted a pic of my recent acquisitions to a headphone group on Reddit, and was downvoted to hell. It seemed to be a bunch of snobs that associated price with quality, not recognizing that you can get some surprisingly good sound without spending a fortune. Yes, I'd like to have some Grados or something by Meze or Stax or even Beyerdynamic, but I'm a cheap bastard and have been unemployed for a couple of years so I have to make do. One of the commenters said that if I had spent the money that I wasted on all the headphones in the picture I could have bought some actual high-quality headphones. I then asked what high-quality headphones I could have bought with the $25 or so I spent on this entire collection, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody I didn't get a response...
@DankPods when talking about cheap headphones, I kinda have a laugh. Most of my headphones are cheap and I have one high end set of cans (Audio Technica btw), but i have this really high end amplefier from the 90's. It lets you set the individual volume for each part of the spectum. But then here I am, plugging in my $15 Sony headphones into em.
Samson Technologies is a pro audio company from New York. They've been around for a while, and their entire point, as far as I can tell, is that they try to be the cheapest viable option. Doesn't mean they don't have some big name customers, Eric Clapton was one of their featured users back in the day. I believe Thomann, the largest music store in Europe, pushed them really hard a couple years ago, until they introduced their own store brand.
They are a fantastic brand. I bought their Q2U microphone for a remote work and school setup and it's fantastic. Blows away any cheap Blue condenser mic or headset away at the price. Audio Technica have a similar one as well.

Yeah honestly I don't know what they're thinking with the HD 206, we had them at my former high school as well and I can confidently say that the random 10 Euro earpods I got from my local electronics store sound better. It really doesn't make sense to me why Sennheiser is even selling them at this price point and advertising them as entry level professional/studio headphones, especially since the HD559s which are for all intents and purposes excellent headphones aren't much more expensive (at least here in central Europe).

Samson tip plug also has a fitting for you to use 4.5mm Big Dingus Jack.
Weirdly enough, they sold these in either box, a pair or only headphone itself (no box, only transparent plastic casing). And it also weird how I ordered it twice and both have different padding. One is velvet, and the other one is stitched synthetic leather
I did order a pair of these and it came in the box. It has a booklet, a small piece of paper and then the headphones themself with the big jack. I did want to get the stitched version, but I instead got the velvet pads. I aint complaining, it is just a pillow, I swear.
I ordered two, both from the same listing on Amazon DE. Both arrived in a full cardboard box with a little instruction/warranty booklet. The headphones were resting in a well laid out cardboard interior, so they wouldn't just fly around in the box. The wire was rolled up with two basic cable binders, the 4.5mm Big Dingus was already pre-installed, easily removable by unscrewing the bit. Both arrived with velours (velvet) padding.
Now I wonder, is there something you have to specify to get the stitched version or is it just by chance that you get one or the other?

@@xruwwiwid lmaooo saaammeee
I feel you. Lol.
The first mic I bought was a USB Samson from Walmart.
I had samsons headphones a while ago. The cable broke after like a year, but the sound quality was ofc quite good.
I remember once buying headphones for $1 and they made everything sound like it was recorded in an empty metal room
@Lucas Nikunen I'm pretty sure buying any pair of $1 earphones and you'd get a similar experience
@Lucas Nikunen I honestly don't remember, this was at least 5 years ago but I think they were probably the E-Circuit brand earbuds, they look how I remember.
12:42 those AKG K240s I bought today. I'm still baffled at how freaking clean they sound over anything else I've worn thus far, they're lovely. Got them on a reduced price too!
You really got me into the basics of sound and how different headphones sound better.
Like I'm still in the complete pov-spec area but it's suprising the difference good sound can make.
I've had a set of razer hammerheads, always knew they weren't great, but when I got some Sennheiser buds, wow the difference was unreal! And even at home I still way prefer my wireless headphones, I don't usually sit at a desk and I just hate cables, so I have multiple wireless headphones, I have a set of JBL quantum 800s that I use for pretty much everything but when they go flat, I pull out the buds that came in my last Oppo phone. They are absolutely amazing!
They're made of aluminium and even though they aren't wireless I love using them as they are the best sounding head phones I own.
its what i was addressing abt, getting used to correct sound is mandatory to 'redefined' definitions of good sounds

Totally just got a set of Samsons as my first set of studio Headphones! So good! Thanks for the advice!
My music technology in high school recommended the Samsons for producing with and I’m still using them over 5 years later and they’re my favourite pair of headphones still. I made my 2 first albums at school with them, such good memories.
The pizza analogy was actually very accurate and helpful

I've got a set of those black Sony's. Had them for years and they're still working well. Also, I've got a few sets of various Apple earpods that I've just found every so often that still work pretty well, so that's pretty cool.

I actually have that Sony pair, they've actually lasted me longer than any pair of wired headphones I've ever had, super durable and they've been a good daily driver for me
I used to have them. Used em for a year or so for my laptop and then the left ear went and it sucked. Bought another pair, plugged the Sony's in to my phone just to make sure they weren't working. They were FINE. Turns out the headphone jack on my laptop had busted before those bad boys
I use them and have 4 pairs of them
My red ones lasted me about a year before one ear died completely lol
I love my Sony headphones! They’re working great about 5 years in!
I've had these bastards for longer than the others combined
Those samson headphones are really nice for VR, i have a quest and they fit so perfectly around the strap so i can have super nice wide high quality audio in VR. They're also really light too so you don't feel any extra weight which is nice
After 6 months or using those Sony's, the thin tissue covering the ear cushions started to rip apart. Also, the headphone jack started to lose signal when it bended too much. I had to constantly adjust it so I could hear sound. Back then they were worth 60$.

Hi mate, fun video. I have the SR850 headphones and they’re fabulous. Use then for mixing. Have you tried the closed back version SR950 headphones? Thinking about getting them for recording to minimise sound leakage into the mic. Regards from Steve in Adelaide.
the cables on the sonys is helpful if you have to unexpectedly sprint for the bus, they can only fall backwards so far! they were the last pair of headphones I had before I moved on to noise cancelling, and the first pair of headphones I had that I didn't break an ear cup off of, mainly because the swivel meant I could put them in a zip pouch flat instead of trying to fit headphones into old handbags and other things to try to protect them.
i just found this dude and he’s so interesting?? i first watched him R I P on raycons and i was thinking about buying them up til that point (not anymore lmao). like i’m genuinely fascinated by the shit he does, man is awesome!

YES!!! I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!
Those Samson Headphones were the one's I started out with. I use the Z55's right now, but I'm telling you, that little bugger there did me wonders.
There's definitely a higher frequency bias feeling though, I won't lie about that. But they did the job well :)
Would you recommend them for starting out? I keep getting told that Koss Porta Pros absolutely smash them but the Samsons are looking real fine to me.
@@garydsketch It's all very subjective. I hate the Koss porta pros honestly, I went through two pairs in the span of a month (got the first ones replaced because they broke within like a week). I wasnt even that rough with them just like normal headphones. Broke the other pair a few weeks later.. The sound is like.. meh.. Not bad for the price I guess but for just 20 usd more you can get way better over ear. Only problem is it will be clunkier as well. What I did a year ago or so is that I took a step back and invested in a pair of in ear, kz zsn pro (15 usd) sound veery good for that price. Specially if you EQ it a touch. Then if you want to get something even better there are kz zs10 pro for 30 usd or so which I bought 2 months back or so. I have been using over ears in the 40-100 usd range for years before that. Still do some times but rarely (sennheiser hd 280 or marshall monitor headphones).
They both the kz's need to be played in a bit because at the start they are kinda sharp in the higher stuff, but if its something you are going to move around with I would recommend checking out in ears even if you might think that sound stupid. There are lots of very cheap very good options atm. It all depend on music taste etc though unfortunately, specially with the low price stuff.
@@garydsketch I'm rocking some SR950's right now (Sam-Ash had them for $50, apparently down from 100) and I LOVE these things. The 850s are probably arguably better being semi-open (my 950s are closed, but I bought these for DJ'ing) Totally recommend as starter headphones.
@@vir042 very helpful, thank you! It may be a dumb reason but I'm not too sure about getting in ears/IEMs because I'd prefer a pair of actual headphones, something I can hang up and grab quite conveniently
@@syntaxvrc thank you! The 950s are going for about the same price nearby, so would you say I should get those over the 850s?
Samson used to make some spectacular studio monitors too. Took a little EQ to get them perfect, but you could definitely get them perfect.
the trick with da apple dirty buds i've always used but i never knew if it was actually a thing so it's nice to see a music pro doing it--- i always angle them to the side though

I adore my 280 pros, good to know that there's a cheap semi-open complement from the Samsons if I wanted to check that out. The isolation from the closed back on the 280s is part of why I use them often, but there are definitely scenarios I'd want to open it up.

I just sent my dirty buds through the washing machine. Nailing it every day
Ahhh!! After watching so many reviews FML......some humor to fill my day! Thank You!
Picked my 850s up about 6 months before this vid was made, they had spongey kind of fabric, not immitation leather, pads but otherwise still the same. One of sodding side strings broke within a few days, even though I only have a tiny pea head, and one of the pads is forever slipping off and a right pain in the rear to get back on, but other than that they do sound bloody great for £35.
The dirt on the iPad kept making me thing there was something on my screen and I kept trying blowing it off
I was all like "Damn, those Samson look familiar" and then he said they are a basically clone of the K240s, which I'm using rn...
If they sound as good as mine do, then they are pretty damn good!
I've heard the k240s have a better sound (like a decent bit better), but the samson have the edge in soundstage.
I've got a pair of K240DFs. I've yet to find an amp that really drives them to their full potential. The Musical Fidelity X-Can V3 came close.. but these really need a professional 600 Ohm driver. At least the Samsons are 32 Ohms
Samson, Superlux and ISK tend to clone those. They are all good brands as well if you're looking for cheap studio quality headphones. I think all have great open-air headphones as well as closed.
I love my 850s, I've had them for almost a decade and use them all the time for hours and hours. I got my before the velvet was added, but still comfortable. Luckily, I got them on sale and they accidentally sent 2 pairs. Unbelievable value!
9:22 i have these headphones and it looked good in the picture when i got them it felt like it will just break and the cable protective stuff started to break after 1 month of use no joke i have to treat these soo carefully for it to not break anymore
I laughed at all the people freaking out that theirs were the first ones featured.
Then I realized I have 2 pairs of them.
XD
Bet you don't have three like me :')
I basically had PTSD from the Sennheiser you brought out. Short story: I was at a friend's house and he was an audiophile. He brought out the exact same Sennheiser you had, and I was just visibly disappointed when I tried it on.
My friend actually have that Sennheiser, long story short he actually liked it
@@irvanray1898 He worked in a terribly loud industrial job, didnt he? 🤔
All low end Sennheiser are just a cheap made plastic build, which is the reason why i never bought them. You needed to look at its 600 or 800 series for a decent audiophile headphones.
almost bought the sampsons but went looking and ended up picking up a set of k240 studio's used for less than 2 bucks more. big thanks m8, they're exactly what i've been looking for and in excellent condition.
Wanted a Philips SHP9500 but was really tight in budget so I resorted to the SR850 and they did not disappoint! had them for about 10 months now

My desk sounds soo good...
Heh listening out my Samsons right now

lmao I own those Sennheiser headphones, literally the only upside to them is the length of the cable.
The $US20 HD201s (now rebranded as $US40 HD206s) were called "breadphones" by local sellers because they go through tons of them as they hit a sweet spot with performance per price. The pads disintegrate pretty quickly and the cable starts peeling instantly, but they sound ok for $20. $40 is highway robbery and no one should buy the HD206s.
Don't think the length is an upside as it is far too long that you could step on it
@@sonicman9910 it's just nice to have something long enough without needing an extension cord
@ I got mine on Amazon after hearing a good word about Sennheiser lol
@@00SNIVY00 Same, was pretty pissed when the band snapped after a year, at least I got em for like 20 bucks on a firesale.
Samson is actually a fairly well known (although low-end) brand for budget studio gear. Cheap stuff but considering the prices pretty good value

Just go balls to the walls and buy a pair of Bose QuietComfort 2’s lol they sound MINTY 👌🏼 plus the noise cancellation is bangin, the AC in my room is loud as all hell and the second you put these headphones on and turn them on, you can’t hear anything at all, even without music playing. 10/10 recommend
Justin Grago monoprice bt300 anc are almost as good, but cheaper
I have...
Sony zx300, $25US, they're alright, very durable, what I use when traveling, after like 6 years of use, I was actually able to tell that the speakers were losing definition, and why I upgraded to the 7506.
Sony 7506, $80US, it's what I use for everything while at home, PS4 through controller, XB1 through the monitor jack (controller jack has too much static to use), phone, tablet, so much detail in everything. Took me 2 weeks for my ears to adjust to how they sounded.
Skullcandy Crushers (wired), $35US, when BASS is both the question and the answer, there is no better choice, unless you get the Crusher Wireless, which have stereo active bass instead of mono active bass. Bass Canon is a proper canon! The Crusher (wired) suck for anything that isn't MAXIMUM BASS they are literally unusable for voice chat because one of my friends has a voice that is so freaking low that the Active Bass activates and I can't understand a single thing he says. XD
If you want really good sound at an affordable price, I'd recomemend looking at a company called Koss (they make some expensive stuff, but their cheap stuff is real good).
@@quantum.9883 I saw some Koss Nova 40 for $10 at good will, had a good laugh looking up some reviews online, and passed on it, "heaviest headphones I've ever used, like strapping 80's internal pc speakers to your head, with gimmicky surround sound" sure they may be worth something to a collector, but I don't do eBay.
There is a reason everything was compared to the $90 Sony 7506, and why you often see them in the behind the scenes of movies, they're solid, like the Nissan GTR of headphones, sure there is a lot better, but it all costs more.
So which specific model of Koss do you recommend, and how do they compare to the 7506?
Flat cables are much less likely to get tangled, and much easier to untangle.
Fat cables are even better
Yeah that's why I prefer flat Micro-USB cables for when I'm visiting my friend's house, and I'm bringing my own charger because he only has USB-C and I seem to be falling behind in the technological race since I'm using an LG Tribute Empire phone, and it only takes Micro-USB. I could always just use one of those adapters, maybe even with a PD Trigger inside if I really wanted to be sure I wasn't shocking my phone with 12 volts, but I'd rather bring my own charger. I don't think he would appreciate it if I took his charger to plug in my phone, which I pretty much never charge at home, since I can't trust myself to just plug something in to my charger brick every night before I go to bed. But I guess that's just me.
This was the video that made me buy the SR850's and a pair of Brainwavz XL earpads three years ago. This made the push for me into audiophile territory. With a bit of equalizing to get the high end down and the low end up and connected to my FiiO E10, these sound absolutely amazing. Best 85€ I've ever spent.
you can find a copy of the samson, called Superlux, excellent sound for a half the price, they also made the version semi-open and full closed ones.
